Chapter 15 - Bellandi Wanted Jared to Inherit the Same Fear

Jared wanted to go to Pier 19.

No one was surprised.

"Alone?" I asked.

"Obviously not."

"Good. You're improving."

He gave me a tired look.

Federal agents took over the operation. The pier belonged to a shipping company connected to Bellandi but leased through two intermediaries. Cameras showed little activity. Heat scans suggested four people inside the warehouse.

At 11:52 p.m., Jared entered wearing a wire.

I stayed with Naomi in a surveillance van half a mile away.

I did not like it.

That was not the same as having the right to stop him.

Inside the warehouse, Bellandi waited beside a shipping container.

He was older than Jared, silver-haired, impeccably dressed, and calm enough to be terrifying.

Victor stood behind him.

Alive.

No Brendan.

Bellandi's voice came through our headphones.

"Your father would have come alone."

Jared answered, "My father made mistakes."

"Your father understood structure."

"He understood fear."

Bellandi laughed softly. "Same thing, if you're honest."

Victor looked thinner than his photographs. He kept one hand near his coat.

Jared stopped ten feet away.

"Why Sophie?"

Bellandi's tone remained conversational. "Because witnesses are expensive. Killing them creates noise. Keeping them creates leverage."

My stomach turned.

Jared said, "Lena died because of you."

"Lena died because she climbed where she should not have climbed."

"You ordered Victor to take her files."

"You have a recording, I'm told."

That was the first sign of strain.

He knew the investigation had reached him.

"Then why ask me here?"

Bellandi gestured toward Victor.

"A trade. He becomes the architect of everything. He confesses to theft, kidnapping, Lena's death, the attacks. In return, you tell investigators Ashford Seven was created by your father for ordinary security expenses. The old payments disappear into history."

"And you?"

"I retire."

Jared laughed.

Not loudly.

"You kidnapped me when I was sixteen."

Silence.

In the van, Naomi looked at me.

Bellandi replied, "I authorized pressure against your father. I did not select the method."

"That's what men like you call responsibility when they want to escape it."

Victor's head turned slightly toward Bellandi.

Something passed between them.

Jared saw it too.

"He was going to give you to me," Jared told Victor.

Victor said nothing.

"Every payment, every kidnapping, every dead witness becomes yours. He walks. You disappear."

Bellandi's calm finally cracked. "Enough."

Victor stepped away from him.

"Is that true?"

"Do not be stupid."

"You told me the lawyers would protect us both."

"They will if you follow instructions."

Victor laughed once, bitterly.

"That's what you said about Brendan."

Agents waited for the agreed signal.

Jared needed a direct admission tying Bellandi to the present conspiracy.

He pushed.

"You ordered the attack on Evelyn."

Bellandi smiled. "Evelyn should have burned the ledger when I told her to."

Naomi's hand shot up.

There.

"And Sophie?" Jared asked.

Bellandi's face hardened. "The girl should have been moved out of the country the first night. Victor kept trying to use her."

There.

Agents moved.

The warehouse erupted in commands.

Bellandi froze.

Victor reached inside his coat.

Jared stepped back.

For half a second, I thought Victor had a gun.

Instead he pulled out a flash drive and threw it across the floor toward the agents.

"Insurance," he shouted.

Bellandi lunged at him.

Agents tackled both men.

It ended without a gunshot.

Almost disappointingly ordinary after months of fear.

But before officers separated them, Bellandi looked directly at Jared and said something the wire caught clearly.

"Your father built this arrangement. You only survived because men like me allowed it."

Jared answered, "Then I survived the wrong way."

Later, back at the penthouse, he sat beside Caesar until dawn.

The dog rested his chin on Jared's knee for the first time since Lena died.

Neither of them moved for a long while.

When agents searched Pier 19 after the arrests, they found a second container prepared for departure. Inside were cash, false passports, encrypted drives, and medical supplies. One passport carried Sophie's photograph under another name. Bellandi had planned to move her internationally if negotiations failed. Another passport used Victor's picture. There was none for Brendan. Naomi noticed that immediately. Brendan had been disposable long before he realized it. The discovery supported what we had heard at the laundromat: Bellandi's network survived by promising each participant a future while quietly preparing to sacrifice them. Jared looked at the empty container and said his father had mistaken those arrangements for stability. They were not stable. They were simply delayed betrayals. Investigators also found manifests showing three earlier shipments routed through the same pier on nights when Black Hound moved protected witnesses and cash. Those records gave prosecutors a physical chain connecting Bellandi's shipping network to Victor's operations, not merely testimony from frightened insiders.
