Chapter 17 - The Dead Man Who Had Been Wearing Sebastian’s Name

The man in federal custody called himself Sebastian Moretti.
His fingerprints said otherwise.
They belonged to Carlo Vescari, Paolo’s older brother, arrested twice in the 1980s and presumed dead after a warehouse fire.
The real Sebastian Moretti had been buried beneath the Drake for nearly eighteen years.
Lorenzo stared at the identification report.
“He let me believe the wrong man killed my mother.”
Agent Cole shook her head. “We do not know that yet.”
“Carlo told Rosie he ordered the bombing.”
“He told her what Sebastian would have known.”
Rosie thought back to the office.
The burn scar. The confidence. The intimate details.
A man could rehearse facts.
He could not easily rehearse emotion.
Carlo had wanted Lorenzo to believe.
Why?
Mateo answered first.
“To keep you looking backward.”
The blue route depended on ghosts, inherited grudges, and men fighting old wars.
If Lorenzo focused on Sebastian, he would miss Michael.
If Enzo focused on Vittorio, he would miss Michael.
If Rosie focused on Vale, she would miss Michael.
Every layer contained a plausible villain protecting the next.
Carlo finally agreed to speak when prosecutors showed him photographs of the remains.
His confidence cracked.
“Michael said the tunnel was empty.”
Cole leaned forward. “Who killed Sebastian?”
Carlo looked toward Lorenzo.
“Marco.”
Lorenzo went still.
Rosie felt his hand tighten against the chair.
Carlo continued.
“Sebastian ordered the bomb. Marco found him two months later. Brought him here.”
“Why here?” Cole asked.
“Because Vale’s father controlled the tunnel. No cameras. No questions.”
Lorenzo’s face emptied.
His father had not merely retaliated.
He had hidden a body beneath the hotel.
Carlo smiled faintly.
“Still want to talk about choices?”
Rosie turned toward Lorenzo.
He did not look at her.
Cole asked, “Where did you enter this?”
“Years later. Michael found the old network. Vittorio was sick. Vale wanted money. I had names and history.”
“You impersonated Sebastian.”
“People fear legends more than accountants.”
“Who killed Lorenzo’s mother?”
Carlo’s smile disappeared.
“Sebastian ordered it.”
“At whose request?”
Silence.
Cole repeated the question.
Carlo finally said, “Vittorio.”
Enzo closed his eyes.
Lorenzo did not move.
His uncle had helped kill his mother.
His father had killed Sebastian in revenge.
Then the brothers continued sharing a family name for decades.
Rosie understood why Lucia had refused simple categories.
No one in the ledger was clean.
Some simply stopped sooner than others.
Carlo gave them one more fact.
Michael planned to leave Chicago after the charity operation.
“He has a plane?”
“No.”
“Train?”
“No.”
“Then how?”
Carlo shrugged.
“He said he would leave the same way mercy always leaves.”
The phrase meant nothing to Cole.
It meant something to Celeste.
“Church transport.”
Michael’s charity operated medical vans transporting patients and equipment across state lines. One van was scheduled to leave the Saint Raphael gala staging site at 2:00 a.m.
The gala had moved.
The van schedule had not.
Rosie checked the vendor portal.
A Saint Raphael truck was still booked at the Drake loading dock at 1:30 a.m.
“He expects the tunnel operation to fail,” she said.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“What?”
“He called it a grave. He knew we would find it. Maybe he wanted us to.”
Cole understood.
“The tunnel is evidence against Vale and Carlo. Michael sacrifices the old network, then leaves while we celebrate.”
Mateo checked traffic cameras.
The charity van had entered an underground garage near the parish forty minutes earlier.
It never exited.
Rosie pulled up event freight timing.
“There is another Saint Raphael vehicle.”
A refrigeration van used for donated food.
Its plate was registered to a church affiliate.
Traffic cameras showed it heading toward the Drake.
Agent Cole mobilized units.
Lorenzo caught Rosie’s wrist as she reached for her coat.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You are staying here.”
“We have done this argument.”
“And I have lost it repeatedly.”
“You noticed.”
“This time I am not negotiating.”
Rosie studied him.
Behind the command was something different.
He had just learned his father committed murder in the hotel beneath her workplace. His uncle ordered his mother’s death. The family history he carried like armor had turned inside out.
He was afraid.
Not only for her.
For who he might be.
Rosie lowered her voice.
“I am not going because I think you need help hurting Michael.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“I’m going because the freight system is mine. I know what he expects to see. If something changes, I’ll notice.”
He released her wrist.
“Stay beside Mateo.”
“I can agree to that.”
“For once?”
“Do not ruin it.”
At 1:22 a.m., the Saint Raphael refrigeration van entered the Drake loading dock.
It carried donated food.
No weapons.
No Michael.
The driver handed Rosie a manifest.
Everything appeared correct.
Then she saw the destination code.
Not Drake Hotel.
D-RAKE.
A single letter inserted.
Rosie had seen the same trick in fraudulent purchase orders.
A mirror vendor.
A ghost destination.
She turned the page.
The real shipment was not arriving.
It was leaving.
At 1:30 a.m., a second truck rolled out of a private parking garage two blocks away.
Its manifest identified four hundred pounds of spoiled banquet food.
Rosie knew no such disposal had been scheduled.
May you like
She looked at Lorenzo.
“That’s him.”
