Chapter 8 - The Video That Stopped Too Soon

Two weeks after I left the mansion, I watched a recording of myself sitting on the floor of Sophie's nursery with my face buried in my hands.

I had not remembered the camera was recording that afternoon. Sophie had been four days old. I had fed her, changed her, and placed her safely on her back in the bassinet. Then I sat down beside the rocking chair because I was too tired to stand.

For thirty seconds, I cried.

The clip Rachel first showed me contained only those thirty seconds. It had been forwarded anonymously to Roman's divorce attorneys with a claim that it demonstrated "maternal instability." The lawyer had sent it straight to Rachel rather than attempting to use it privately against me.

I stared at my own bent shoulders. I remembered exactly how the room smelled: fresh laundry, warm milk, and the faint lavender soap in the bathroom. I remembered waiting for Roman to come upstairs. I remembered deciding not to call him because the previous evening he'd said he was busy.

What I had not remembered was how small I looked on the floor.

"I was tired," I said. "Sophie was asleep."

"I believe you," Rachel replied. "We're going to look at the entire recording, not a piece someone chose for us."

The independent security reviewer had preserved the nursery system's local archive before the equipment was disabled. With Roman's legal authorization and an appropriate confidentiality agreement, the reviewer supplied the full sequence to the court-appointed evaluator and our attorneys. It showed me checking Sophie's breathing, placing her down properly, and sitting beside the chair. After a short rest, I stood and returned to the bassinet when she stirred.

There was nothing in the full footage suggesting that I had abandoned her.

The anonymous email carrying the cropped video had originated from an account used for previous Crane Advisory correspondence. That fact did not by itself prove Laya pressed send, but it gave investigators a clear lead. Its attached file retained processing information showing the original had been shortened shortly before transmission.

I felt exposed in a way I could not describe. The camera had been installed as a convenience for me. Now the most private moments of the hardest week of my life were being handled by lawyers and strangers.

"Can the judge make them stop sharing it?" I asked.

Rachel said we would seek strict limits on disclosure, and that the court was likely to take the privacy of a newborn seriously. She did not promise something she could not guarantee.

At the temporary-order conference, Roman's attorney agreed to prohibit further use or distribution of nursery recordings outside the legal process. The parties also agreed that any remaining private copies would be identified and preserved for the investigation rather than circulated. Rachel applied for additional protective restrictions regarding the child's images.

My body began to recover before my sleep did. The nurse said that was common when a person was caring for a newborn during a period of stress. Julia helped at night when she could. My mother came to stay for a week once her doctor cleared the journey. She held Sophie while I showered and made me sit down before my legs began to ache.

One afternoon she found me looking at a photograph from the hospital. Roman was holding Sophie in the pale light beside my bed. I looked exhausted, but I was smiling.

"Do you still love him?" she asked.

I thought for a long time.

"I love the man I thought I married. I don't know what to do with the man who was actually there."

My mother didn't try to solve it for me. She put a hand over mine and let the silence settle.

Roman continued visiting Sophie through the family center. He arrived on time. He learned the difference between her hungry cry and the noise she made when she needed to burp. Once, when she spat up on his shirt, he laughed with such surprise that the worker smiled too.

I saw glimpses of the father he might become. I no longer confused those glimpses with proof that our marriage should continue.

Rachel encouraged me to separate the two questions. A man could learn to be a responsible parent without becoming a safe partner for me. Sophie's relationship with her father deserved careful consideration. My marriage deserved honesty about what it had cost.

A week before the hearing, Roman's lawyer submitted a sworn declaration from him. He confirmed that he had signed the general household-access amendment, that he had not reviewed the additional permissions later attached to it, and that he had allowed Laya an inappropriate personal role in his life while his wife was pregnant. He also confirmed that he had not seen me neglect Sophie and had no factual basis for claiming I was incapable of caring for her.

I read the declaration seated beside Julia's kitchen table. Roman had never admitted so much without first explaining why I was partly to blame.

The words mattered. But they arrived after I'd been frightened out of my home by something done with his authority.

That evening, Laya sent a letter through her own attorney disputing Naomi's account. She claimed she had been arranging legitimate support services at Roman's request and that she knew nothing about the copied signature. She acknowledged that Crane Advisory had received household payments but insisted they were for actual work performed.

It was not a confession, and Rachel treated it as a position to be tested against records. Invoices, account permissions, Naomi's photographs, and the preserved messages were more useful than competing insults.

Then Daniel found a final entry in the transaction files. A draft budget presented Crane Advisory as an ongoing family-care department beginning the month after Sophie's birth. Its approval was conditional on the medical evaluation being accepted.

The budget had been prepared before I went into labor.

For the first time, we could see not just the surveillance or the forged form, but the financial benefit that was supposed to follow it.

The woman who claimed to be helping me recover had planned to be paid for replacing me.
