Chapter 11 - Peter Vale Was Protecting the Wrong Person for the Right Reason

Peter Vale did not look like a kidnapper.

That was his advantage.

Gray coat.

Gloves.

Controlled movements.

The man who stepped from the van at Pier Six looked like security because he had spent twenty years becoming the shape of authority.

Celeste remained inside.

Marcus watched through a long lens from the neighboring block.

Vivienne controlled nearby cameras.

Damian stood with Samuel and pretended none of them existed.

“Vale works for you?” Damian asked.

Samuel laughed.

“No.”

“Then why is he here?”

“Because everyone eventually works for fear.”

Inside Damian’s earpiece, Vivienne spoke.

“Peter called me ten minutes ago.”

Damian did not react.

“What did he say?”

“That he took Celeste from the clinic before Samuel’s people could.”

That changed everything.

Marcus added, “He has one passenger besides Celeste. No visible weapons.”

Samuel watched Damian’s face.

“You hear something?”

“Wind.”

Samuel smiled.

Elena’s voice came through next.

“Ask who attacked me.”

Damian did.

Samuel’s expression remained flat.

“Not my men.”

“Convenient.”

“I wanted the ledger pages, not your assistant.”

“My sister.”

The word slipped out.

Samuel’s face changed.

Damian saw the instant it became real.

Elena.

Alive.

Daughter.

Samuel took one step forward.

“Bring her.”

“No.”

“You don’t decide.”

“I’ve decided for four years without knowing.”

Samuel’s control cracked.

“You hid her from me.”

“I didn’t know she existed.”

“Celeste did.”

“Celeste protected her.”

The sentence struck.

Samuel’s hand moved toward his coat.

Damian’s gun was already out.

Neither fired.

Wind scraped metal somewhere above them.

Then Peter Vale’s voice echoed from the loading door.

“Put them down.”

Both men turned.

Vale stood with his hands visible.

No weapon.

Celeste sat in a wheelchair behind him.

Damian forgot Samuel.

Forgot the harbor.

Forgot everything.

His mother was seventy now.

Hair nearly white.

Body thin.

But her face.

His face.

The same dark eyes.

She stared at him for a long moment.

Then whispered:

“Dami?”

No one had called him that since childhood.

His weapon lowered.

Samuel moved.

Vale reacted faster.

A pistol appeared from behind the wheelchair cushion, aimed at Samuel.

“Don’t.”

Samuel froze.

Celeste looked from Damian to Samuel.

Then began shaking.

“No.”

Her voice gained strength.

“No, no, no.”

Vale crouched beside her.

“You’re safe.”

She struck his hand weakly.

“Liar.”

He accepted it.

Vivienne’s voice entered Damian’s ear.

“Peter has been feeding me false security reports for years.”

Vale heard nothing.

Damian asked, “Did you attack Elena?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“Two Ashworth contractors loyal to Malcolm.”

Vivienne inhaled sharply through the line.

Vale continued.

“Malcolm ordered them to recover the pages and frighten her.”

“They stabbed her.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you move Celeste?”

“Because Malcolm realized Damian was close. He panicked.”

“Did you kill Malcolm?”

“No.”

Vale looked at Samuel.

Samuel did not move.

“Malcolm followed me into Tunnel Four. Samuel was waiting.”

There it was.

Samuel smiled faintly.

“You have no proof.”

Vale reached into his coat slowly.

Damian tensed.

Vale removed a phone.

“Malcolm recorded everything.”

Samuel’s face changed.

“Where is it?”

“Not here.”

Good answer.

Vale looked at Damian.

“Your mother has been under Ashworth protection for twelve years.”

“Protection?”

Damian’s voice nearly broke.

“She was drugged.”

“Yes.”

“That is not protection.”

“No.”

Vale’s face tightened.

“At first the medication was medical. She had a traumatic brain injury after the bombing.”

“What bombing?”

“Not your father’s.”

Damian stared.

Vale continued.

“Three days before Vincent died, Samuel tried to kill Celeste.”

The harbor disappeared around them.

“He found out she copied Price’s accounts. He also learned about the child.”

Elena.

Samuel’s daughter.

“He ran her car off Harbor Road. She survived. Malcolm moved her to Haven House.”

“Then why tell me she died when I was ten?”

Vale shook his head.

“Different incident.”

Celeste began whispering.

“Vincent lied.”

Damian knelt beside her.

“What?”

Her hand rose toward his face.

Stopped halfway.

He took it.

Cold fingers.

Real.

“Vincent told you I died before all this,” she said slowly. “He sent me away when you were ten.”

“Why?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because Samuel knew about Elena.”

Damian turned toward his uncle.

Samuel’s face had lost every trace of warmth.

Celeste continued.

“I thought if I disappeared, both children would be safe.”

“You left me.”

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Pain crossed her face.

“Yes.”

No excuse.

No revision.

Just yes.

That hurt more.

Vale spoke quietly.

“Vincent later found her. They started working together against Price. That’s the cassette.”

Damian understood.

His childhood loss and the later harbor conspiracy were connected but not identical.

Celeste had vanished first to protect Elena.

Then resurfaced secretly.

Then Samuel tried to kill her when she gathered proof.

Vincent died two days later.

Damian looked at Samuel.

“You killed my father.”

Samuel smiled.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Celeste’s hand tightened around Damian’s.

“I did.”

Everything stopped.

Damian looked at her.

“What?”

May you like

Tears moved down her face.

“I put the bomb in Vincent’s car.”
