Chapter 1 - The Thing Hidden Beneath the Crib

“No,” Liana said. “I think someone wanted you to believe there was nothing there.”

Matteo’s expression cooled.

For one dangerous second, she thought he might order her out. Then Nico shifted against her chest and made a sleepy sound. Matteo looked at his son, not at her, and the anger in his face changed direction.

He crossed to the crib.

The mattress was thick and fitted so tightly into the carved frame that Matteo had to lift one corner with both hands. Liana knelt beside him, still holding Nico. Beneath the mattress lay only the polished wood support his security team had already searched.

“Nothing,” Matteo said.

Liana stared at the footage frozen on the tablet. The hooded woman had not reached beneath the mattress. Her hand had gone lower, toward the side rail.

“Lift the lining.”

Matteo looked at her.

“The fabric under the mattress. It folds over the frame.”

He ran his fingers along the cream-colored lining. Near the far corner, a seam gave beneath his thumb.

Something metallic clicked against the wood.

Matteo went still.

He pulled back the fabric and removed a tiny brass key wrapped in a square of faded blue cloth. A silver charm fell into his palm with it.

Liana stopped breathing.

The charm was half of a sun.

Not decorative. Not expensive. One edge was deliberately jagged, made to fit against another half.

Her hand flew to the chain hidden beneath the collar of her uniform.

Matteo saw the movement.

“Show me.”

Liana hesitated, then drew out the necklace she had worn since she was twelve.

The second half of the same silver sun rested against her palm.

Matteo’s eyes moved from one piece to the other.

“They match.”

Liana could barely hear him.

She touched the charm in his hand. A shallow scratch crossed its surface near one ray. She remembered making that mark with a safety pin when she and Elena were fourteen, arguing over which half belonged to whom.

Her knees weakened.

“That was my sister’s.”

“You said was.”

Liana swallowed.

“My twin.”

Matteo’s gaze sharpened.

Nico stirred again, opened his eyes, and looked directly at the silver half-sun in Matteo’s palm. Then he turned toward Liana’s face.

His small hand reached up and touched her cheek.

Liana’s eyes filled.

Matteo watched his son’s reaction, then looked at her as if the answer were rearranging itself in front of him.

“Your twin was in this room.”

“I don’t know.”

“You recognize her necklace.”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Liana closed her fingers around her own half of the pendant.

“I haven’t seen Elena in five years.”

Matteo’s silence hardened.

“She disappeared after taking a job she wouldn’t talk about. She called twice the first year. Then nothing. I thought—”

She stopped.

Thought she was dead.

Thought she had chosen another life.

Thought enough years without an answer eventually became an answer.

Matteo opened his hand again. The tiny brass key lay beside Elena’s half of the sun.

Nico stared at Liana with the calm certainty he had shown from the moment she entered the foyer.

Matteo looked at his son.

Then at Liana.

“He didn’t recognize you,” he said quietly.

Liana’s throat tightened.

“He recognized her.”

Outside the nursery, footsteps moved past the door.

Matteo closed his fist around the key and pendant.

“Then before anyone in this house learns what we found,” he said, “we find out who Elena Graves really was to my wife—and why my son thought she was safe.”
