Chương 1 - The Photograph No One Expected to See

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

The ballroom had gone so quiet that I could hear the small electric motor in Uncle Joe’s wheelchair clicking as it settled under his weight.

Luca held the photograph between two fingers. His face had emptied of everything except concentration.

“Vanessa. Why are you in this picture?”

She looked at Joe first, then at the emerald earring in his hand.

“Because the woman beside your mother was mine.”

Luca’s eyes lifted. “Your mother knew my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Then why have you never told me?”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened. For once, she had no polished answer ready.

Joe shifted in the wheelchair. “Anthony, don’t make the child answer for what happened that night.”

“I’m not asking about the fire.” Luca’s voice stayed low. “I’m asking why the woman I was supposed to marry hid a connection to my family for three years.”

Vanessa reached up slowly and removed the emerald earring from her left ear. Without it, the matching stone on the other side suddenly looked too large.

She placed the earring on the white tablecloth beside Joe’s scorched one.

“My mother’s name was Elena Bellini,” she said. “She worked for your mother before the fire. She made me promise never to tell a Moretti where this came from.”

Joe stared at her.

Luca did not.

He kept watching Vanessa.

“And you thought the best way to honor that promise was to become engaged to me?”

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

Vanessa looked around the room as if she had only just remembered they were surrounded by thirty-six people who had come to celebrate her.

“Not here,” she said.

Luca turned toward the nearest security man.

“Clear the ballroom.”

Vanessa flinched. “Luca—”

“Now.”

Nobody argued.

The musicians stopped. Chairs scraped. Guests collected coats and phones and expressions they would carry into tomorrow’s gossip. Within minutes, the room that had glittered with champagne and crystal felt enormous and hollow.

I started backing toward the service doors.

Luca looked at me.

“Emma.”

I stopped.

“You stay.”

Vanessa gave me a sharp look, but Luca was already kneeling beside Joe again.

Joe touched the battered lunchbox on his lap.

“I came to give you memories,” he said. “I didn’t know I was bringing you a war.”

Luca’s expression softened for half a second.

“Then we find out what actually happened.”

Vanessa stared at the two emerald earrings lying side by side.

“My mother spent the rest of her life afraid of this family,” she said. “If you want the truth, Anthony, you may not like the person who taught her to be afraid.”

May you like

Then she looked toward the dark portrait of Luca’s father hanging beyond the ballroom doors.

And for the first time that night, Luca did too.
