Chapter 1 - The Name on the Medallion

His eyes opened instantly.

For half a second, panic flared across his face. Then recognition returned, and with it the practiced stillness Clara knew from the rest of the house.

Arthur sat up. He looked at the bandage around his hand, then at the chair where she had spent the night.

“You stayed.”

“You were sleeping in my bed.”

A faint crease appeared between his brows, as if he had expected mockery and did not know what to do with plain fact.

Voices sounded in the corridor beyond the door. Kitchen staff. Morning had arrived.

Arthur rose carefully. At the threshold, he stopped.

“If anyone asks, I was never here.”

Clara folded her arms. “No one asks me anything.”

His gaze settled on her, sharper now, almost sober. “Last night—what I said—”

“Was said by a man who could not breathe.”

“That does not make it harmless.”

“No,” Clara said. “But it makes it human.”

Something in his expression tightened.

Then a small metal disk slipped from the torn pocket of his suit jacket and struck the floor.

Arthur did not notice.

He opened the door, checked the corridor, and disappeared toward the private stairs.

Clara waited until his footsteps faded before bending to pick up the disk.

It was a blackened silver medallion, no larger than a coin. On one side was the Moretti crest.

On the other were three initials scratched by hand.

S.B.B.

Clara stopped breathing.

She had seen those initials once before, carved into the back of the watch her mother had kept locked in a kitchen drawer for thirteen years.
