Chapter 15 - Pier Fourteen Forced Everyone to Make Their Choice

Rosa disappeared from protective housing during a shift change.

A substitute officer arrived with convincing credentials and a patrol vehicle that had been reported stolen only minutes earlier. By the time the real unit checked in, Rosa was gone.

Kane called Avery directly.

"No police," he said.

Avery's hand shook, but her voice did not.

"Let me hear her."

A pause.

Then Rosa snapped, "Don't you dare do anything stupid for me."

Avery almost cried with relief.

Kane pulled the phone away.

"Pier Fourteen. Bring the Bellweather share certificate and the original ledger."

"You know police have the ledger."

"Bring what you have."

"You need my signature, not paper."

"Smart girl."

The call ended.

Ortiz was already recording and tracing.

"He's moving," she said. "Signal bounced."

Dom stood at the conference room window, fury radiating from him.

Avery knew the old version of him — the Moretti everyone feared — would have gathered men and answered violence with violence.

He looked at her instead.

"What do you want to do?"

The question mattered.

"We make him think I'm cooperating."

Ortiz built the plan.

Nora Chen prepared a fake transfer package with a concealed tracker. Police placed teams around Pier 14. Avery wore a wire beneath her blouse.

Dom was ordered to stay away.

He agreed too easily.

Avery noticed but had no time to argue.

At 11:40 p.m., she walked alone toward Warehouse C.

The waterfront wind cut through her coat.

Inside, Rosa sat tied to a chair but appeared unharmed.

Kane stood behind her.

He was younger than Avery expected, perhaps fifty, with disciplined posture and a face that revealed nothing.

"Certificate."

Avery held up the folder.

"Rosa first."

Kane smiled faintly.

"Your father said the same kind of things. Always bargaining from the weak side."

"You killed him."

"I watched him choose."

The wire beneath Avery's clothes suddenly felt hot.

"Choose what?"

"To protect you instead of himself."

Rosa's eyes widened.

Kane continued because arrogant men often mistook confession for power.

"Vescari offered him a clean exit. Hand over the real documents, fix Bellweather, and walk away. Enzo gave us fake records and sent the shares beyond reach."

"So you cut his brakes."

Kane's smile disappeared.

"He made consequences inevitable."

Avery heard her father's voice in memory: ledgers are more honest than people.

"No," she said. "You made a choice."

Kane stepped closer.

"Sign."

She opened the folder.

"Where's Vescari?"

"Not your concern."

"It is if he's buying the shares."

Kane's eyes narrowed.

Avery needed time for Ortiz's teams to position.

"You know what's funny?" she said. "My father beat you five years ago."

Kane's jaw tightened.

"He died."

"And you still don't have the harbor."

Rosa made a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob.

Kane struck the table beside Avery, not her.

"Sign."

The warehouse lights went out.

For one second there was total darkness.

Then emergency lamps flashed red.

Someone shouted outside.

Kane grabbed Rosa.

Avery heard a struggle near the loading door.

Dom's voice.

He had come anyway.

Kane dragged Rosa toward a side exit and raised a handgun.

Police shouted commands.

Avery dropped behind a crate.

A shot cracked.

Then another.

The gun skidded across concrete.

Dom hit Kane from the side.

They went down hard.

Ortiz's team rushed in.

Within seconds Kane was face down, cuffed, bleeding from a cut above his eye but alive.

Rosa was pulled free.

Avery crawled toward Dom.

He sat against a crate, one hand pressed to his shoulder.

Blood spread between his fingers.

"You promised to stay away," she said.

He winced. "I agreed to stay away."

"That's the same thing."

"No. Apparently I'm still learning."

She laughed and cried at once.

The bullet had passed through soft tissue. Painful, not fatal.

As paramedics treated him, Ortiz approached with Kane's phone sealed in an evidence bag.

"You're going to like this," she said.

The phone had been unlocked when officers seized it.

A message from Vescari had arrived three minutes earlier.

AFTER SHE SIGNS, REMOVE ROSA AND THE GIRL. MORETTI TOO IF HE APPEARS.

For the first time, Gabriel Vescari had written the order himself.

At the hospital, after doctors confirmed Dom would keep full use of his arm, Avery sat beside his bed and waited until he opened his eyes.

"You ignored the plan."

"Yes."

"You could have ruined the police operation."

"Yes."

"You could have died."

"Also yes."

She wanted to stay furious.

Then he said, "I heard Kane say Rosa's name over the intercepted channel. I reacted before I thought."

"That is exactly the problem."

"I know."

Avery pulled the chair closer.

"Protecting someone is not the same as deciding you are the only person allowed to take risks."

Dom looked at her.

"Enzo said something similar once."

"Then apparently you require repetition."

"Apparently."

She took his uninjured hand for one second, then let go.

It was not forgiveness for every secret.

It was not a promise.

May you like

It was simply relief that he was alive.

For the first time, Avery allowed that to be enough without turning it into an obligation.
