Chương 4 - Eleven Years of Silence Breaks at Last

Anthony DeLuca refused to meet at the Moretti estate.

He refused Luca’s office, Daniel’s suggested hotel suite, and every private location where Luca could control who entered and who left.

Instead, he chose a nearly empty church in Berwyn at two in the afternoon.

“Public enough that you won’t do anything foolish,” Daniel said as he drove.

Luca looked out the window. “He knew my father. He knows foolishness is hereditary.”

Hannah sat in the back seat beside him with her injured wrist resting in her lap.

She had tried twice to tell herself she did not need to be there.

Both times she remembered Vanessa asking whether “the girl” had seen Wallace take the key.

Whatever this was, she had already become part of it.

The church smelled of candle wax and old wood. Sunlight fell through colored glass in muted reds and blues.

Anthony DeLuca sat alone in the third pew from the back.

He looked nothing like a dead man.

He was sixty-eight, broad-shouldered despite his age, with silver hair and a scar running from his left ear toward his collar. His coat was plain. His shoes were polished. His eyes went first to Luca, then Daniel, then Hannah.

“You brought her.”

Luca stopped at the end of the pew.

“You know who she is?”

“Wallace told me.”

Hannah disliked hearing her name implied in a conversation between strangers.

Anthony seemed to notice.

“Hannah Parker,” he said. “I’m sorry you were dragged into this.”

“I walked into a pantry,” she replied. “Apparently that was enough.”

A flicker of approval crossed his face.

Luca sat one pew behind him rather than beside him.

“You told me my father wasn’t robbed.”

Anthony looked toward the altar.

“No.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

For a while, the older man said nothing.

When he finally spoke, his voice was low.

“Your father discovered money moving through construction companies that did business with both the Morettis and the Bellinis. Pension funds. Union insurance reserves. Payroll accounts. Small amounts at first. Then millions.”

Luca’s expression did not change.

“Who was taking it?”

“Vittorio Bellini’s people.”

Vanessa’s father.

Hannah understood immediately why the name mattered.

Luca was engaged to the daughter of the man Anthony had just accused of stealing from companies tied to Luca’s family.

“Did my father know?” Luca asked.

“He found out six weeks before he died.”

“What did he do?”

“What Enzo always did when he thought someone had crossed a line he still believed existed. He confronted Vittorio privately.”

Daniel leaned against the end of the pew.

“That would have been eleven years ago. Why wasn’t Bellini destroyed then?”

“Because Enzo wanted proof before he started a war.”

Anthony rubbed one hand over his jaw.

“He collected records. Payment instructions. Company ledgers. Copies of authorizations. Enough to show the pattern, not enough to prove who ordered every transfer.”

“The safe-deposit box,” Hannah said.

Anthony looked at her.

“Yes.”

Luca’s voice hardened. “Why didn’t you bring it to me?”

“Because your father died before we could finish verifying it.”

“And then you disappeared.”

“I was supposed to meet him the night he died.”

Anthony finally turned.

“When he didn’t arrive, I went to his car. Police were already there. Before sunrise, two men came to my house.”

“Bellini’s men?”

“I recognized one.”

“Who?”

“Carlo Sera. He worked for Vittorio at the time.”

Daniel’s expression sharpened.

“Carlo disappeared eight years ago.”

“I know.”

Anthony looked back toward the altar.

“I understood two things that morning. Enzo was dead, and whoever killed him believed I knew where his evidence was.”

“So you faked your death.”

“I let them think what they were already trying to make true.”

Anthony explained that a burned vehicle found off Interstate 80 had belonged to a cousin who had loaned him a car weeks earlier. Identification had been difficult. The Moretti family had been in chaos. Anthony used the confusion to disappear before anyone could confirm the body.

It was not an elegant plan.

It had simply worked.

Luca stared at him.

“You let me bury you.”

Anthony’s face tightened.

“I let you bury an empty casket because I believed staying alive was the only way to keep your father’s evidence from disappearing too.”

“You could have contacted me.”

“You were twenty-eight, furious, grieving, and surrounded by people whose loyalties you had inherited rather than chosen.”

Anthony’s gaze shifted briefly toward Daniel.

“I did not know who had helped Bellini.”

Daniel accepted that without offense.

Luca did not.

“You decided for me.”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“That was wrong.”

The admission took some of the force out of Luca’s anger.

Anthony continued. “I waited. I watched. By the time you stabilized the family, the Bellinis had become too deeply tied to your legitimate companies for me to appear without evidence.”

“The box.”

“Yes.”

“What’s inside it?”

“Your father’s copies. My notes. A list of accounts we were still tracing.”

“Enough to prove Bellini killed him?”

“No.”

Hannah saw Luca’s disappointment.

Anthony did too.

“It proves motive,” he said. “It proves theft. It proves Enzo knew. It does not prove who ordered his death.”

That distinction mattered.

Hannah was relieved someone in the room respected it.

Luca asked, “Why did Vanessa hire Wallace to find you?”

Anthony’s eyes hardened.

“Because I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“Three months ago, Vittorio Bellini announced your engagement at a charity event. I saw Vanessa standing beside you.”

Anthony took a slow breath.

“I thought Enzo’s son was about to marry into the family that had destroyed him.”

“So you contacted her.”

“I sent one message. No details. I told her to ask her father what happened the night Enzo Moretti died.”

Hannah closed her eyes briefly.

One message.

One question.

Enough to start everything.

“What did she do?” Luca asked.

“She hired Wallace to find me.”

“Did she?”

“Yes.”

“Why not tell me?”

Anthony’s expression turned grim.

“Because when Wallace found me, Vanessa came herself.”

Luca became still.

“She asked what proof I had. I told her the proof belonged to you and that Enzo had hidden the key where only family could reach it.”

“The watch.”

“I didn’t say watch.”

“But she figured it out.”

“Her father knew Enzo carried that watch every day. Maybe she asked him. Maybe she searched old photographs. I don’t know.”

Hannah thought of Vanessa entering Luca’s study freely during wedding planning.

Access had not been difficult.

“What happened when she met you?” Hannah asked.

Anthony looked at her.

“She was frightened.”

“Of you?”

“No. Of her father.”

That complicated everything.

Luca’s gaze narrowed. “Explain.”

“She said Vittorio had controlled every major decision in her life since she was a teenager. Schools. relationships. money. She said he wanted this marriage because Moretti development contracts would protect Bellini companies from outside audits.”

Daniel swore quietly.

“So the engagement was business.”

Anthony shook his head. “Not entirely. She said she cared about Luca.”

Luca’s expression did not change.

Hannah looked away.

Anthony continued. “But she also said if the evidence existed, she needed it before her father found out I was alive.”

“To expose him?” Luca asked.

“That was what she claimed.”

“And you believed her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because she brought Wallace.”

The church fell quiet.

Anthony looked at Hannah’s brace.

“And now I know I was right not to trust her.”

Luca stood.

“Vanessa has the key.”

“Yes.”

“She knows the bank.”

“If she found Croce, she does.”

Daniel checked the time.

“Midwestern Federal will still be open.”

Anthony shook his head.

“She can’t simply walk into Enzo’s box. The lease is under an old trust name.”

“What name?”

“Marigold Holdings.”

Daniel was already typing.

Luca asked, “Who has authority?”

“Enzo did. I did.”

“You’re legally dead.”

Anthony gave him a dry look. “I’m aware.”

“So Vanessa has a key she may not be able to use.”

“Unless she found the authorization documents too.”

Hannah remembered the black case.

“Was there anything else in Luca’s study that could contain them?”

Luca thought.

Then his face changed.

“My father’s estate binder.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Where?”

“Archive cabinet in the library.”

“You checked it?”

“No reason to.”

They left the church quickly.

Back at the estate, Mrs. Carter met them in the library.

“The binder is here,” she said.

For one hopeful second, Hannah thought they had been wrong.

Then Luca opened it.

The folder labeled MARIGOLD HOLDINGS remained inside.

The authorization page did not.

Luca turned to Daniel.

“When was the cabinet accessed?”

“House staff?”

“Anyone.”

Daniel called security.

Hannah looked through the glass doors toward the hall.

Vanessa appeared at the far end wearing a cream coat, perfectly composed.

She had returned.

Her eyes went first to Luca.

Then to Anthony DeLuca standing beside him.

For the first time since Hannah had known her, Vanessa Bellini looked genuinely afraid.

And in that instant, Hannah understood something more unsettling than guilt.

Vanessa had not expected Anthony to survive long enough to walk into Luca’s house.
