Chapter 6 - Vanessa's Price

Vanessa agreed to meet at Priya's office the next morning.
She arrived with Marcus Vale and no wedding ring.
I noticed immediately.
So did Daniel.
Nobody mentioned it.
The conference room was glass-walled, which felt like an insult from the universe.
Priya had the blinds closed before I arrived.
Vanessa sat at the far end of the table.
She looked smaller than she had three days earlier.
Not weaker.
Just less polished.
Her hair was pulled back.
There were shadows beneath her eyes.
Marcus spoke first.
"This meeting is for information exchange only. No admissions, no settlement, no waiver of rights."
Priya nodded.
"Agreed."
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did Ethan know you were coming?"
She glanced at Marcus.
He said, "You can answer."
"No."
"Where is he?"
"At the house."
"Still?"
Her jaw tightened.
"For now."
I sat back.
"Tell me about the transfer."
Marcus started to speak.
Vanessa cut him off.
"I prepared it."
The room went quiet.
"Prepared what?" Priya asked.
"The cottage transfer."
"Using Eleanor's signature?"
Vanessa looked at me.
"Yes."
My fingers tightened under the table.
Marcus said, "Vanessa, answer only the question asked."
She ignored him.
"Ethan told me your signature was already authorized for family property matters."
I laughed once.
"You believed that?"
"At first."
"At first?"
"He said you had signed blank forms before."
"I have never signed a blank legal form in my life."
"I know that now."
"When did you know it then?"
She hesitated.
"When you refused at dinner."
A silence settled over the table.
I leaned forward.
"You had already prepared a version with my copied signature before asking me to sign the real one."
Vanessa looked down.
"Yes."
"Why ask me at all?"
"Because Ethan wanted a clean original if possible."
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Priya asked, "Whose idea was the copied signature?"
Vanessa answered softly.
"Ethan's."
Marcus shifted.
"My client is describing her understanding."
"No," Vanessa said. "I'm describing what he said."
She looked at me.
"He told me, 'Mom signs everything if you put it in front of her at the right moment.'"
Richard's letter flashed through my mind.
You hate conflict and would rather surrender something than lose him.
I asked, "And when I didn't?"
Vanessa's eyes moved to the table.
"He panicked."
"He grabbed me."
"Yes."
"He pushed me."
Marcus said, "Vanessa—"
She spoke over him.
"Yes."
The word landed with more force than shouting.
My throat tightened.
"You saw it."
"Yes."
"And then you called me broke and useless."
Vanessa's face reddened.
"Yes."
I waited.
"Why?"
She finally looked at me.
"Because I was terrified."
"Of me?"
"Of everything collapsing."
"So you humiliated me while I was bleeding."
"I was angry."
"At me."
"At the situation."
"That's cowardice disguised as grammar."
She flinched.
Marcus said, "Mrs. Whitmore, this is not productive."
"It's extremely productive for me."
Priya lifted a hand.
"Let's continue with finances."
Vanessa exhaled.
"Ethan owes more than the lender notice shows."
Maya leaned forward.
"How much more?"
"I don't know exactly."
"Estimate."
"Another million. Maybe one and a half."
I stared at her.
"Where?"
"Private notes. Friends. Two investors from his old software company."
"Does Blue Alder hold any of it?"
Her face changed.
Maya noticed.
"Vanessa?"
"Blue Alder was supposed to protect household money."
"From creditors?"
"Yes."
"Whose idea?"
"Ethan's accountant."
Maya asked, "Name?"
Vanessa gave it.
Maya wrote it down.
"Did Blue Alder receive money from Ethan's business?"
"Yes."
"For actual services?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Sometimes."
"And other times?"
"It was moved there so we could pay household expenses."
"How much remains?"
"About two hundred thousand."
Maya's eyebrows rose.
"Where is the rest?"
"Gone."
"Spent?"
"Mostly."
I looked at Vanessa.
"On what?"
She laughed bitterly.
"The life everyone thought Ethan could afford."
"Cars?"
"Cars. Club dues. Trips. Renovations. School donations. Business dinners. Investors who expected to be impressed."
"You don't have children."
"Private school donations bought access to people Ethan wanted to know."
That somehow made it worse.
Daniel asked, "What did Ethan believe would happen if Eleanor transferred the cottage parcel?"
Vanessa answered immediately.
"We would combine it with the main parcel, obtain a new valuation, and use the increased collateral to extend the private loan."
"Would the lender have accepted property held in your name?"
"Yes."
"Why your name?"
"Because Ethan's credit was already compromised."
I said, "So the land needed to belong to you because he could not borrow against it himself."
"Yes."
"And after the loan was extended?"
"We planned to transfer it back later."
I laughed.
"Of course."
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"You think I don't know how that sounds?"
"I think you knew exactly how it sounded before you did it."
She looked away.
Priya said, "What else are you offering?"
Vanessa reached into her bag.
Marcus touched her wrist.
"We discussed this."
"I know."
She pulled out a small flash drive.
"Copies of Ethan's messages."
Nobody moved.
"Messages to whom?" Maya asked.
"Me. His accountant. Two lenders."
"About Eleanor?"
"Some."
My stomach tightened.
"What do they say?"
Vanessa looked at me.
"You should read them yourself."
Maya took the drive using an evidence sleeve.
"We will."
I asked, "Why are you doing this?"
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"Because Ethan told his lawyer the forged transfer was my idea."
There it was.
Not remorse.
Self-preservation.
"So he turned on you first."
"He lied about me first."
"That's not an answer."
"It is my answer."
I leaned back.
"You stood beside him for three years while you told people I was dependent on you."
"Yes."
"You knew I owned the cottage land?"
"I knew you claimed you did."
"You rearranged my mail once because you said it looked messy. Did you ever open trust correspondence?"
Vanessa went still.
Marcus said, "Do not answer that."
I looked at him.
"That's a yes."
"It is not."
Vanessa said quietly, "Once."
Marcus closed his eyes.
She continued.
"A statement came from Whitmore Fiduciary Services. I opened it."
"When?"
"Two years ago."
"What did you see?"
"Not much. It was a summary notice. But I knew then there was still money."
I stared at her.
"Did Ethan know?"
"I told him."
Everything inside me went still.
For three years, I had believed Ethan thought I was poor.
The old sedan.
The ordinary clothes.
The guest cottage.
The experiment.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked equally surprised.
"How much did Ethan know?" I asked.
Vanessa answered.
"He didn't know the amount. The notice didn't show balances. But he knew the trust was active."
"Since two years ago."
"Yes."
"So when he called it imaginary—"
"He was lying."
The room seemed to shrink.
That was the reversal I had not prepared for.
My test had never been real after the first year.
Ethan had known there was money.
He simply did not know how much.
I whispered, "He knew."
Vanessa nodded.
"He thought if he waited, you would eventually tell him."
"And when I didn't?"
"He started looking for other ways."
Maya asked, "Other ways to do what?"
Vanessa looked at the flash drive.
"Find out what the trust owned."
I felt Richard's letter inside my handbag.
Do not use the money to test whether he loves you.
The test had failed in a way I had never imagined.
Not because Ethan discovered I was wealthy and became greedy.
Because he discovered I had hidden something and spent two years trying to penetrate it.
Priya asked, "Did he access any trust systems?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Not directly."
Maya leaned closer.
"What does that mean?"
"He tried to get information through his father's old contacts."
"Who?"
"I don't know all of them."
"Give us the ones you know."
Vanessa listed three names.
Daniel wrote them down.
Then she said one that made him stop.
"Say that again."
She repeated it.
Daniel looked at me.
"That man was a junior administrator on the land trust."
"Was?"
"He left eighteen months ago."
Maya asked, "Why?"
Daniel's face had gone pale.
"Because Richard had him removed from another account for sharing confidential beneficiary information."
Vanessa looked confused.
"Ethan met him twice."
Nobody spoke.
I asked, "When?"
"Last year."
"Where?"
"At a hotel bar downtown."
I looked at Daniel.
"Could Ethan have learned the twenty-one-million figure?"
"Not from the land trust alone."
"Could he have learned enough to know where to look?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Possibly."
Maya sealed the flash drive.
"Then we need to treat the trust review as a potential confidentiality breach, not only a family dispute."
Vanessa stood.
"I told you what I know."
I looked at her bare left hand.
"Are you leaving him?"
She paused.
"I don't know."
"You took off the ring."
She looked at her hand as though she had forgotten.
"He blamed me before the glass was cleaned up."
I thought about Ethan outside the cottage saying Vanessa thinks we went too far.
Even then, he had been building distance between himself and what happened.
Vanessa picked up her bag.
"I did terrible things, Eleanor."
"Yes."
She flinched at how quickly I answered.
"But I didn't push you."
I stood.
"No. You just opened the door."
She left without another word.
After the conference room door closed, Daniel said, "That was brutal."
"It was accurate."
Maya held up the evidence sleeve containing the flash drive.
"And this may be worse."
"Why?"
"Because if Ethan knew the trust existed for two years, his financial behavior may not have been desperation."
I looked at her.
May you like
"What was it?"
"Planning."
