Chapter 7 - The Family Claire Tried to Save

The DNA results came back two days later.

Noah and Ethan were identical twins.

Alexander was their biological father.

Claire was their biological mother.

There was no ambiguity.

There never had been.

Only theft.

Alexander read the report in his study while the boys built a fortress from couch cushions.

Ethan had moved into Sterling House temporarily.

He refused the enormous guest room and slept in Noah’s room instead.

The first night, Noah whispered, “We were supposed to be together.”

Ethan answered, “We are now.”

Alexander had gone into the hallway and cried where they could not see him.

Elena found him.

She said nothing.

She just stood beside him.

Now, two days later, she entered the study carrying tea.

“You don’t have to serve anyone.”

She looked at the tray.

“Habit.”

“You’re not staff anymore.”

“I resigned.”

“I know.”

“You tried to stop me.”

“I offered you another role.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Director of family security?”

“You notice things.”

“I was dragged across a ballroom in another hotel job once.”

He stared.

“What?”

She laughed.

“Kidding.”

“You’re not funny.”

“I’m very funny.”

He almost smiled.

She placed the tea down.

“What does the report say?”

“Everything we knew.”

“That can still hurt.”

“Yes.”

She sat.

“Beatrice called me.”

Alexander stiffened.

“Why?”

“To apologize.”

“What did you say?”

“That apologies aren’t receipts. They don’t cancel debt.”

He looked impressed.

“She also asked if she could see the boys.”

“No.”

Elena watched him.

“Eventually?”

“I don’t know.”

“She’s their grandmother.”

“She abandoned Ethan.”

“She did.”

“She helped Vale.”

“She did.”

“She also testified yesterday.”

“That doesn’t erase it.”

“I didn’t say it did.”

He looked at her.

“You think I should forgive her.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I think punishment and boundaries are different.”

Alexander leaned back.

“Explain.”

“You can keep her away because the boys need safety. That’s a boundary. If you keep her away because you want her to hurt, that’s punishment.”

He stared.

“Claire taught you that?”

“No. Therapy.”

He laughed unexpectedly.

Elena smiled.

“See? Funny.”

A knock came.

Samuel entered.

He had been staying in the guesthouse.

Alexander still had not decided whether he trusted him.

But Ethan did.

That mattered.

Samuel handed over a folder.

“Final Haven House list.”

Alexander opened it.

Forty-three children.

Twenty-six questionable placements.

Nine already adults.

Eight still minors.

His face hardened.

“Can they locate them?”

“Most.”

“And the families?”

“Some knew. Some didn’t.”

Elena whispered, “That’s going to destroy people.”

Samuel nodded.

“It will also answer questions.”

Alexander turned pages.

Then stopped.

Claire Sterling.

A file under her maiden name.

“What is this?”

Samuel went still.

“I was hoping to confirm before telling you.”

“Tell me now.”

“Claire was adopted.”

Alexander looked at Elena.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.”

“How can you be sisters if—”

Elena’s face changed.

“We were half-sisters.”

Samuel explained.

“Elena’s mother had Claire before she married our father. Claire was placed for adoption as an infant.”

Elena whispered, “Mom told me Claire was a family friend.”

Alexander stared at her.

“You didn’t know she was your sister until later?”

“She found me when I was nineteen.”

Samuel nodded.

“She tracked us down.”

Alexander felt another piece fall into place.

“Why hide the relationship?”

Elena answered.

“Claire feared the Sterlings would investigate my family.”

“And they did.”

“Yes.”

Samuel pointed at the Haven file.

“Claire’s adoption was arranged through an early version of Gregory’s network.”

Alexander went cold.

“He controlled Claire before she ever met me?”

“Maybe not intentionally.”

“Nothing with Gregory was accidental.”

Elena took the file.

Her hands shook.

Inside was a birth record.

Claire’s biological father: unknown.

Mother: Marianne Marlowe.

Placement agent: Gregory Vale.

Elena whispered, “He knew her from infancy.”

Alexander felt sick.

“Did he arrange our marriage?”

Samuel said, “No evidence.”

“Yet.”

Elena looked at him.

“Don’t turn every good thing into something Gregory designed.”

He looked at her.

“He touched everything.”

“He touched pieces.”

She pointed toward the boys.

“He didn’t make Noah choose me.”

Alexander went still.

That was true.

He did not make Ethan bite his hand.

He did not make Bianca confess.

He did not make Beatrice surrender leverage.

He did not make Claire hide evidence.

Control had limits.

That was perhaps the only comforting fact.

That afternoon, Alexander visited Beatrice.

She was under house arrest pending charges related to obstruction, financial misconduct, and unlawful confinement.

She looked smaller in her own drawing room.

“Are the boys well?”

“Yes.”

“Ethan?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“Good.”

Alexander sat.

“You knew Claire was adopted through Haven.”

Beatrice looked confused.

“No.”

He believed her.

That surprised him.

“Gregory arranged it.”

Her face fell.

“So he knew her before us.”

“Yes.”

“He must have thought the marriage was useful.”

Alexander stared.

“You think he manipulated it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you?”

“No. You met Claire at university.”

“I know.”

“She hated you at first.”

Alexander almost smiled.

“She did.”

“That part was real.”

He looked at his mother.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

“That’s new.”

“I want to testify.”

“You already are.”

“Fully.”

“What have you held back?”

She looked ashamed.

“Accounts.”

“Where?”

“Switzerland. Cayman entities. Singapore.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

“You still had secret accounts.”

“Yes.”

“For Gregory?”

“For me.”

“Why?”

“Escape money.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You could have walked away any day.”

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I kept thinking one more compromise would make the previous ones worth it.”

That was the most honest thing she had ever said.

Alexander stood.

“You may see the boys eventually.”

Her eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

“Not soon.”

“I understand.”

“And only if Ethan wants to.”

“Yes.”

“No gifts.”

She almost smiled.

“I understand.”

He left.

That night, the family ate dinner in the kitchen.

Not the formal dining room.

Kitchen.

Pizza.

Noah loved it.

Ethan inspected everything before eating, a habit from years of unstable placements.

Samuel noticed.

So did Alexander.

Neither said anything.

Elena sat between the boys.

Noah asked, “Are you going to marry Daddy?”

Elena choked on water.

Alexander said, “Noah.”

“What?”

Ethan looked interested.

“Are you?”

Elena wiped her mouth.

“No.”

Noah frowned.

“Why?”

“Because adults don’t get married because a five-year-old tells them to.”

“You’re both five,” Alexander said.

“Exactly,” Noah replied.

Samuel laughed so hard he had to leave the table.

Elena looked at Alexander.

“This is your fault.”

“How?”

“Genes.”

“Unproven personality science.”

Ethan smiled.

It was the first time Alexander had seen him do it without hesitation.

The room softened.

Then Noah said, “Mommy Claire wanted Elena here.”

Silence.

Elena looked down.

Alexander asked, “Do you remember her telling you that?”

Noah nodded.

“In the apartment.”

“What did she say?”

“She said if she had to go away, Elena knew the songs.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Claire used to sing to Noah.

Alexander remembered one lullaby.

Elena whispered, “She taught me all of them.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Can you sing one?”

Elena glanced at Alexander.

He nodded.

She began.

Softly.

The boys listened.

Alexander closed his eyes.

He could almost hear Claire beside her.

Not replaced.

Never replaced.

Remembered.

When the song ended, Ethan whispered, “I think I know that.”

Elena froze.

“How?”

“Uncle Sam had a recording.”

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Claire made it.”

Alexander stared at him.

“You have her voice?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“A lot.”

Alexander laughed through tears.

“Everyone had pieces of my wife except me.”

Elena reached across the table.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You had the part she chose every day.”

That silenced him.

May you like

He squeezed her hand.

Neither let go immediately.
