Chapter 1 - The Night the Ballroom Broke

Adrian Mercer did not remember crossing the ballroom.

One moment he was standing beneath the chandeliers, staring at Celeste as if the woman he had married had been replaced by a stranger wearing her face. The next, he was beside Theo, crouched low enough to see the fear in the boy's eyes.

"Theo," he said carefully. "Come to me."

The six-year-old tightened both hands around Mara's apron.

"No."

The single word struck Adrian harder than the accusation that had just shattered his life.

He glanced at Mara. The young maid's face had gone white beneath the dust and tears.

"I am not taking him from you," Adrian said.

Mara swallowed.

"You already did."

Adrian flinched.

Behind them, Celeste laughed once, sharply.

"This is absurd. Adrian, listen to yourself. You are letting a servant stage a melodrama in front of two hundred people."

The elderly housekeeper, Agnes Vale, pushed herself up from her knees.

"It isn't a melodrama."

Celeste turned on her.

"Be quiet."

Agnes trembled, but she did not retreat.

"I have been quiet for six years."

That sentence changed the room.

Adrian looked at the guests.

Some were already reaching for phones. Others avoided his eyes. His birthday gala, meant to celebrate the merger that would put Mercer Holdings into three new markets, had become something else entirely.

A crime scene.

He rose.

"Everyone leaves."

Celeste stared at him.

"You cannot be serious."

Adrian did not look at her.

"James."

His head of security appeared from the edge of the crowd.

"Sir."

"Close the gates. No one deletes security footage. No staff member leaves until police have taken names. Guests may go once their contact information is recorded."

A murmur moved through the ballroom.

Celeste took a step toward him.

"You are calling the police?"

Adrian finally faced her.

"My wife has just been accused, in front of witnesses, of purchasing a newborn child."

"By a maid."

"By his mother."

Celeste's face cracked.

Only for a second.

Then the old confidence returned.

"You do not know that."

Theo made a small sound behind Mara.

Adrian looked down.

The boy had buried his face against her side.

Mara stroked his hair with shaking fingers.

"Theo," she whispered. "I need you to breathe."

"I don't want them to take you."

"No one is taking anyone right now."

Celeste stepped forward.

"Get away from my son."

Mara went still.

Adrian moved between them before he consciously decided to.

Celeste stared at him.

"Adrian."

"Do not touch him."

"He is my child."

"That is exactly what we are going to establish."

"You know I carried him."

Agnes made a broken sound.

Celeste whirled.

"You."

Agnes clasped her hands together.

"Don't make me say it in front of him."

Adrian felt cold move across his skin.

"Say what?"

Agnes looked at Theo.

Then at Mara.

Then back to Adrian.

"Madam did not carry him."

The ballroom seemed to contract.

Adrian heard the ventilation system.

The faint rain against the windows.

Someone crying near the staircase.

He stared at Celeste.

"What does she mean?"

Celeste's mouth opened.

No sound came.

Agnes answered.

"She lost the pregnancy at twenty-two weeks."

Adrian stepped backward.

"No."

"I am sorry."

"No."

"You were in Singapore when it happened."

"I spoke to her every night."

"She wore padding after she recovered. Dr. Halden continued the appointments on paper. The photographs you were sent were from another patient."

Adrian turned slowly toward his wife.

Celeste had tears in her eyes now.

For once, they did not look theatrical.

"You were never home," she whispered.

His voice was almost inaudible.

"That is your defense?"

"I was alone."

"So you stole a baby?"

"I saved our marriage."

Mara gasped.

Adrian's entire body tightened.

Celeste realized too late what she had said.

She shook her head rapidly.

"That is not what I meant."

"It sounded very clear."

"I did not steal him."

Agnes closed her eyes.

Celeste pointed at Mara.

"She gave him up."

Mara's face changed.

Not fear.

Rage.

"I was seventeen."

The guests who had not yet been escorted out fell quieter.

Mara stepped around Adrian.

"I was seventeen, terrified, and alone. My son's father had died in a construction accident three months before Theo was born. I went into labor at Saint Catherine's. I held my baby for one night."

Her voice broke.

Theo looked up at her.

Mara forced herself to continue.

"They gave me an injection the next morning. When I woke, a nurse told me he had stopped breathing. I begged to see him. They said the body had already been taken."

Celeste shook her head.

"You signed papers."

"I signed nothing."

"You did."

"I was drugged."

Adrian looked at Agnes.

"How do you know any of this?"

Agnes stared at the marble floor.

"Because I was a nursing assistant at Saint Catherine's before I worked here."

Mara's breath caught.

Adrian said, "You were there."

Agnes nodded.

"I wheeled the bassinet out of the ward."

Theo began crying.

Mara dropped to her knees.

"Theo, sweetheart, look at me."

He covered his ears.

"I don't want this."

"No. You shouldn't have to hear it."

"I want to go upstairs."

Adrian crouched beside them.

"I'll take you."

Theo looked between him and Mara.

"She comes too."

"Yes."

Celeste moved forward.

"No."

Adrian straightened.

"James."

His security chief stepped between them.

Celeste laughed in disbelief.

"You are having security keep me away from my own child?"

Adrian's expression hardened.

"I am preventing the person accused of abducting him from controlling the next ten minutes."

"Accused by criminals and liars."

Mara looked at her.

"I never asked him to call me Mom."

Celeste's mouth tightened.

Mara continued.

"I never told him who I was. I came here because I saw his photograph in a magazine two years ago. There was a birthmark behind his left ear shaped like a crescent. My son had the same mark."

Adrian looked toward Theo.

He knew the mark.

He had kissed it when Theo was a baby.

His knees nearly failed him.

Mara's voice shook.

"I needed proof before I destroyed his life. I worked here. I watched. I listened. I found the lullaby I used to sing to him still calmed him when he had nightmares."

Theo looked at her.

"The moon song."

Mara nodded through tears.

"The moon song."

Adrian whispered, "You remembered it?"

Theo shrugged, confused.

"I don't know. I just like it when she sings."

Agnes began crying again.

Celeste's face hardened.

"Songs are not evidence."

"No," Adrian said. "DNA is."

That stopped her.

He took out his phone.

"James, call Dr. Patel at St. Vincent's. We are going now."

Celeste's eyes widened.

"Absolutely not."

"You don't get a vote."

"I am his legal mother."

"And if the accusation is false, the test will prove it."

She said nothing.

Adrian watched her silence.

It was the first answer he truly believed.

Within twenty minutes, the ballroom had been cleared.

Police cars waited beyond the front drive, their lights painting the windows blue and red.

Detective Lena Ortiz took initial statements in Adrian's library.

Mara sat with Theo beside the fireplace.

Theo refused to release her hand.

Adrian sat across from them, unable to stop looking at the boy.

His son.

Maybe not his son.

No.

That thought was impossible.

Biology could not erase six years of midnight fevers, first steps, scraped knees, bedtime stories, and dinosaur pancakes.

Ortiz seemed to read his face.

"Mr. Mercer, whatever the test says, no one is making custody decisions tonight."

Adrian nodded.

"Good."

Celeste sat at the far end of the room with her attorney, Graham Pike, who had arrived with astonishing speed.

Pike leaned forward.

"My client will cooperate after a warrant."

Ortiz looked unimpressed.

"A cheek swab from the child and the alleged biological mother can be obtained with consent from the current legal guardian."

Celeste said, "I do not consent."

Adrian answered, "I do."

Pike stared at him.

"Your position is legally complicated."

"So is kidnapping."

"Do not use that word."

Mara flinched.

Theo looked at Adrian.

"Am I kidnapped?"

Every adult in the room froze.

Adrian moved to him immediately.

"No."

Theo frowned.

"But they said—"

"Listen to me."

Adrian knelt.

"You are Theo. You are safe. The adults are trying to understand something that happened when you were a baby. None of it is your fault, and nobody gets to turn you into evidence."

Theo's eyes filled.

"Is Mara my mom?"

Adrian's throat closed.

Mara looked away.

He could have lied.

Six hours earlier, he would have.

Instead he said, "We are going to find out the truth."

Theo stared at him.

"Will you still be Dad?"

The question nearly broke him.

Adrian cupped the back of the boy's head.

"As long as you want me."

Theo threw both arms around his neck.

Adrian held him and closed his eyes.

Across the room, Celeste began to cry.

No one went to comfort her.

At St. Vincent's, the cheek swabs took less than five minutes.

The hospital social worker arranged a quiet family room.

Theo fell asleep with his head in Mara's lap and one hand wrapped around Adrian's finger.

At three in the morning, Detective Ortiz received a call.

She stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her expression had changed.

"Mr. Mercer."

Adrian stood.

"What?"

"We searched an old storage unit leased under Dr. Halden's former clinic company."

Celeste's attorney rose.

"On what basis?"

Ortiz ignored him.

"We found patient ledgers from the year Theo was born."

Mara stopped breathing.

Ortiz looked at Agnes.

"Your name appears in them."

Agnes nodded.

"I expected it would."

"There's also a payment entry."

Celeste's face went blank.

Ortiz turned toward her.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Paid from an account controlled by Celeste Mercer."

Pike stepped between them.

"Detective, do not question my client."

Ortiz closed her notebook.

"I don't need to."

Celeste looked at Adrian.

For the first time all night, she seemed genuinely afraid.

"Adrian."

He said nothing.

"I loved him."

Mara stood so quickly Theo stirred.

"Do not use love to explain what you did."

Celeste's eyes flashed.

"You think loving him for six years means nothing?"

Mara's voice dropped.

"I think stealing six years from me means something."

Adrian looked between them.

Two women.

One boy.

A lifetime built on a theft.

The lab technician entered quietly.

"We have the expedited maternal result."

Nobody moved.

The technician handed the sealed envelope to Ortiz.

She opened it.

Read once.

Then again.

Her eyes lifted to Mara.

"Probability of maternity is greater than 99.99 percent."

Mara covered her mouth.

Theo woke.

He blinked up at her.

"Why are you crying?"

Mara knelt and touched his cheek.

"Because I found you."

Theo stared at her.

Then he reached for Adrian.

May you like

Adrian took his other hand.

And in that sterile hospital room, beneath fluorescent lights that made everyone look exhausted and painfully human, the three of them sat together while the gilded life they had known finally ended.
