Chapter 5 - Elaine's Inheritance

Elaine was found in the hospital chapel.
She sat alone in the last pew with both hands wrapped around a paper cup she had not touched.
Detective Brooks approached with Marcus and Naomi.
Daniel remained upstairs with Khloe.
Elaine looked at the three of them and sighed.
"You found the box."
Brooks stopped.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because for most of my life, I didn't know what was in it."
Marcus sat in the pew across from her.
"Start at the beginning."
Elaine gave him a tired look.
"You say that like there is one."
"Then pick a place."
"My father."
"Leon Meyers."
She nodded.
"He worked for Thorne Capital when I was a child. I knew that much. My mother told me never to mention his name around the Thornes or the Rossis."
Marcus stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because she believed one of those families would kill him."
Brooks leaned forward.
"Was he a witness to fraud?"
"Yes."
"Victor Rossi?"
Elaine nodded.
"My father discovered shell invoices, fake vendors, payments redirected through Caribbean accounts. He brought it to Marcus's father."
Marcus's voice lowered.
"Robert Thorne."
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"Your father wanted to go to federal investigators. Mine was terrified."
"Of Victor?"
"And Arthur."
Marcus frowned.
"My grandfather?"
"Your grandfather built the company with Victor. My father didn't know which man would protect the company and which would protect the truth."
Brooks asked, "So he disappeared."
"He took my mother and me to Oregon under a different last name."
"Why return?"
"I didn't. Not at first."
Elaine looked at Marcus.
"I became an event producer. Years later, St. Gabriel hired my firm. I only learned you were connected when Khloe married you."
"Did Khloe know who your father was?"
"No."
"Did Isabella?"
Elaine's hands tightened around the cup.
"Eventually."
Brooks sat beside her.
"How?"
"My father died three months ago. His attorney sent me the safe-deposit key."
"And you opened the box."
"Yes."
"What was inside?"
Elaine looked toward the chapel doors.
"Documents. Ledgers. Audio cassettes. A letter from my father. And a copy of the genuine trust amendment."
Marcus leaned forward.
"You knew Victor had been removed."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because the letter told me not to trust any Thorne."
He stared.
"Even me?"
"Especially whoever controlled the company."
Naomi spoke.
"How did Isabella find out?"
Elaine swallowed.
"I made a mistake."
"What mistake?"
"I asked a forensic accountant to authenticate the ledgers."
"Who?"
"Andrew Keller's brother."
Marcus sat back.
"Keller."
"Andrew found out through him. I didn't know Andrew was connected to Isabella."
Brooks asked, "Did you meet Andrew?"
"Once."
"Did he know about the box?"
"No. He knew documents existed."
Marcus's voice hardened.
"Did you tell Isabella about the trust amendment?"
"Not directly."
"What does that mean?"
"She confronted me after a gala meeting. She knew my father's name."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
Elaine's eyes flashed.
"I expect you to believe that I have spent twenty-four years living under a name chosen because my father thought your family's business partner might murder us."
Marcus went quiet.
Elaine continued.
"Isabella said she knew I had inherited evidence. She offered money."
"How much?"
"Five million."
Naomi whistled softly.
"You refused."
"Yes."
"Then?"
"She threatened my career. My mother. Khloe."
Marcus stared.
"Khloe?"
"She said accidents happen to pregnant women."
Brooks's expression sharpened.
"And you didn't report that?"
"I had no recording."
"You had a threat."
"I had a woman with a billionaire father and a security chief standing twenty feet behind her."
Marcus's jaw clenched.
"Vane."
"Yes."
"That's how you knew him."
Elaine nodded.
"I saw them together."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried."
"When?"
"Three weeks ago."
Marcus frowned.
"You asked for a private meeting."
"You canceled it."
He remembered.
He had been in London.
"I told Vane to reschedule."
Elaine laughed without humor.
"Exactly."
Naomi looked at Marcus.
"He intercepted it."
Elaine nodded.
"The next day Isabella knew I'd tried to speak with you."
Marcus looked away.
Brooks asked the question everyone had avoided.
"Why were you outside Khloe's suite tonight?"
Elaine's face changed.
"Because Isabella changed the schedule."
"We know."
"I saw the edit."
"Why not cancel it?"
"I did."
"Khloe still came upstairs."
"Because Isabella changed it again through an administrator's account."
Naomi frowned.
"Whose?"
Elaine hesitated.
"Daniel Vale's."
Marcus stood.
"What?"
Elaine immediately shook her head.
"I don't think Daniel did it."
"Why not?"
"Because I checked the login location."
Brooks leaned closer.
"Where?"
"A hospital workstation in the pharmacy corridor."
"Keller."
"Probably."
Marcus sat again.
Elaine looked at him.
"I came upstairs because I thought they were trying to isolate Khloe."
"And you left her alone with Isabella."
Pain crossed Elaine's face.
"For forty seconds."
"You left."
"Khloe told me to."
"You could have stayed."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I saw Vane near the service elevator."
Marcus stared.
"I followed him."
Naomi asked, "Where did he go?"
"Toward the loading corridor."
"And?"
"I lost him. Then I heard Khloe scream."
Elaine's voice cracked for the first time.
"I ran back."
Marcus studied her.
"Did you know the camera was recording?"
"Yes."
"Did Isabella?"
"She thought it didn't record audio."
Brooks's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because I told her it didn't."
Silence.
Marcus slowly understood.
"You lied to her."
Elaine nodded.
"She asked me two days ago."
"Why would you help her believe she could act without audio evidence?"
"Because I wanted her to speak freely."
Brooks stared.
"You set a trap."
"I suspected she was planning something."
"You used Khloe as bait."
"No."
Elaine stood abruptly.
"No. I moved Khloe's break to a room with a visible camera because I thought Isabella might confront her verbally. I never imagined she would attack her."
Marcus's voice became cold.
"You gambled with my wife."
"I tried to protect her."
"You didn't tell her."
"I know."
"Then you didn't protect her. You controlled her."
Elaine looked at him.
"You're right."
That stopped him.
She continued.
"I made the same mistake your family has made for generations. I decided I knew what was best and kept the truth from the person carrying the risk."
Marcus said nothing.
Brooks's phone rang.
She answered, listened, then looked at Elaine.
"The warrant opened your father's box."
Elaine closed her eyes.
"Then you know."
"Know what?"
Brooks's expression was difficult to read.
"There are ledgers implicating Victor Rossi in the old fraud."
Marcus exhaled.
"Finally."
Brooks continued.
"But that's not all."
Elaine looked at her.
Brooks said, "There is an audio cassette labeled 'Robert Thorne.'"
Marcus's head snapped up.
"My father?"
"Yes."
Elaine whispered, "I never listened to all of them."
Brooks continued.
"The digitization team made a quick copy."
Marcus stood.
"What does he say?"
Brooks held his gaze.
"Your father tells Leon Meyers that Victor Rossi is stealing money."
Marcus nodded impatiently.
"We know that."
"Then he says Arthur Thorne knows."
Marcus froze.
"What?"
"Your grandfather knew about the theft."
Elaine's face went pale.
Brooks continued.
"According to the recording, Arthur agreed not to prosecute Victor in exchange for Victor surrendering operational control."
Marcus stared toward the altar.
"So my grandfather covered it up."
"Apparently."
"Why amend the trust then?"
"To remove Victor quietly."
Naomi spoke.
"Protect the company name."
Brooks nodded.
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Three generations of secrets to avoid scandal."
Elaine looked at him.
"And now Isabella nearly killed Khloe because she believed the false version of the trust could give her family back what Arthur took away."
Brooks's phone buzzed again.
She checked it.
"There's more."
Marcus looked exhausted.
"What now?"
"Vane is talking."
Naomi crossed her arms.
"Why?"
"He wants a deal."
"Of course."
Brooks read the message.
"He says Victor financed the brake sabotage."
Marcus's face hardened.
"And Isabella?"
"He says the plan was to trigger Khloe's labor tonight."
Elaine covered her mouth.
Brooks continued.
"Once the baby was born, Vane was supposed to arrange Marcus's death within forty-eight hours."
No one moved.
Marcus asked, "How?"
"Car crash."
He stared at the floor.
Brooks continued.
"Vane says Isabella believed she would marry Marcus after Khloe died."
Marcus looked up.
"Khloe?"
Brooks's expression changed.
"Yes."
"That wasn't the plan you just said."
"It was a separate phase."
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Explain."
"Vane claims Isabella was not told everything."
Elaine whispered, "Victor."
Brooks nodded.
"According to Vane, Victor expected Khloe to survive the premature delivery."
Marcus waited.
"Then what?"
"Once Marcus died and Victor controlled the child's shares, Khloe became a legal obstacle."
Elaine went still.
"What was he going to do?"
Brooks answered.
"He planned to frame her for Marcus's death."
Marcus's eyes closed.
A fake accident.
A forged trust.
A staged confrontation.
A false accusation.
The same method repeated.
Create an image.
Control the evidence.
Let everyone else believe what they were shown.
Marcus looked at Elaine.
"Isabella attacked Khloe and then immediately said Khloe attacked her."
Elaine nodded slowly.
"Because lying first is how they survive."
Brooks's phone rang a third time.
She answered.
This time, her expression changed completely.
"Where?"
She ended the call.
"Victor Rossi is gone."
Marcus stood.
"What do you mean gone?"
"His lawyers can't reach him."
"His car?"
"Found outside the hospital."
Naomi was already moving.
"Aircraft?"
Brooks shook her head.
"Private jet grounded by request."
Elaine looked toward the chapel doors.
"Then he's not running far."
Marcus stared.
"How do you know?"
Elaine's voice became quiet.
"Because if Victor spent twenty-four years looking for my father's evidence, he won't leave without destroying it."
Brooks's eyes narrowed.
"The original evidence is already with police."
"Not all of it."
Everyone looked at Elaine.
She swallowed.
"My father didn't trust banks completely."
Marcus stepped toward her.
"Where is the rest?"
Elaine met his eyes.
"In the Thorne house."
Marcus went still.
"What?"
"My father hid a duplicate ledger there twenty-four years ago."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"His letter says only this: 'I put the truth inside the house of the man who refused to see it.'"
Marcus stared at her.
"My grandfather's house."
Elaine nodded.
"The same house you live in now."
Naomi pulled out her phone.
"If Victor knows the same clue—"
Marcus turned toward the door.
Brooks blocked him.
"No."
"He is going to my home."
"Then police will go."
"My staff is there."
"We'll evacuate them."
Marcus looked at her.
"And if he gets the evidence first?"
Brooks held his stare.
"Then we find another way."
Marcus glanced upward, toward the floor where Khloe rested.
For years he had believed control meant being the person who entered every room first.
Tonight, control meant something else.
It meant not walking blindly into a trap simply because fear told him to move.
He nodded.
"Send the police."
May you like
Then he looked at Naomi.
"And this time, no one keeps the truth from Khloe.
