Chapter 5 - The Name Inside the Fake File

Anna’s scream carried across the terrace.
Matteo was already moving.
“Dante!”
“I see it.”
The security chief ran toward the command room.
Matteo pulled out his phone.
“Lock the outer gates.”
A guard answered, panicked. “South service gate opened with an executive code.”
“Whose code?”
A pause.
“Yours.”
Matteo’s face went cold.
Anna grabbed his arm.
“Get her back.”
“I will.”
“No. Do not tell me you will. Do it.”
He looked at her.
She was not crying now.
That frightened him more.
“I need you inside.”
“I’m coming.”
“Anna—”
“My daughter is in that car.”
He knew better than to argue twice.
“Then stay beside me.”
They reached the security room as Dante pulled traffic feeds onto three monitors.
“Sedan exited south gate ninety seconds ago. Plate is cloned.”
“Direction?”
“Sheridan southbound.”
“Track it.”
“I am.”
Norah rushed in behind them.
“Marisol found another account.”
Matteo did not turn. “Later.”
“She says it is in Lily’s name.”
Anna stopped breathing.
Matteo turned.
“What?”
Norah held out her phone.
“Not her real Social Security number. A synthetic identity. Same birth date. Same initials. Different middle name.”
Anna took the phone.
Lily Mae Mercer.
The fake file read Lily Marie Mercer.
“She made a person from my child.”
Norah shook her head. “Victor did.”
Dante pointed to the map.
“Car turned west.”
“Toward what?”
“Edens Expressway.”
Matteo looked at Norah. “What is tied to the fake identity?”
“Medical debt. Equipment lease. Two dependent tax filings. And an address in Glenview.”
Dante looked over.
“Give me the address.”
Norah read it.
Dante froze.
Matteo noticed. “You know it.”
“Old Moretti safe house.”
Anna stared at him. “Then go.”
“We are.”
Matteo turned to two guards.
“No sirens. No weapons visible unless necessary. There is a child in that house.”
Anna looked at him.
“You think Victor took her there?”
“I think he has used that address enough times to build Lily’s fake record.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No. It is the best lead we have.”
They left in three vehicles.
Anna sat beside Matteo in the rear of the first SUV.
She held Lily’s stuffed rabbit so tightly its fabric ears bent between her fingers.
For the first ten minutes, she said nothing.
Then: “What does your uncle want?”
“Control.”
“Of what?”
“Anything someone else has.”
“That is not enough reason to take my daughter.”
“No.”
“So what is?”
Matteo looked out the window.
“When my father died, Victor believed part of the organization should have gone to him.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because my father did not trust him.”
“Why?”
“He sold access to people he was supposed to protect.”
Anna’s eyes hardened. “Like Evelyn.”
“Yes.”
“And like my daughter.”
Matteo looked at her. “Yes.”
“What did you do to him?”
“I removed him.”
“From the business?”
“From everything.”
“You said people think he lives in Florida.”
“He does not.”
“Where has he been?”
“Moving between names.”
Anna laughed bitterly. “Of course.”
Matteo said nothing.
She turned toward him.
“You knew he used false identities.”
“I knew he bought them. I did not know he was building them from my employees.”
“Your employees.”
The correction cut.
“Yes.”
“You keep saying that like ownership makes you responsible.”
“It does.”
“No. Power makes you responsible.”
He held her gaze.
She continued.
“You had cameras everywhere. Rules everywhere. Managers everywhere. But nobody looked at the little girl scratching a floor until money went missing.”
Matteo did not defend himself.
Anna’s anger shook now.
“She apologized because adults taught her she was the problem.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
“You are right.”
That stopped her.
Matteo looked at the rabbit in her hands.
“I do not know what it is like to be you. But I know what it is like to realize a child suffered in a house where everyone was afraid to disturb the man in charge.”
Anna stared at him.
“My sister died in a house like that.”
“You were a child too.”
“Yes.”
“Then why build another one?”
He had no answer.
Dante’s voice came over the car speaker.
“Target sedan spotted near Glenview. Two minutes ahead.”
Anna straightened.
“Is Lily visible?”
“No.”
“Stay on them,” Matteo said.
The sedan turned into a quiet residential neighborhood lined with bare trees.
Dante slowed the convoy.
“Vehicle stopped at the address.”
Matteo touched Anna’s arm.
“You stay in the car until I know she is inside.”
“No.”
“Anna.”
“If she sees men she does not know, she will panic.”
“She will panic more if there is danger.”
“She needs her mother.”
Matteo closed his eyes briefly.
“You stay behind me.”
“That I can do.”
The house was a plain brick colonial.
No visible guards.
No movement.
The black sedan sat in the driveway.
Dante checked the perimeter.
“Back door open.”
Matteo raised one hand.
Two guards moved around the side.
He and Anna approached the front.
Before they reached the steps, the door opened.
A middle-aged man in medical scrubs stepped out with both hands raised.
Anna froze.
“Doctor clothes,” she whispered.
The man looked terrified.
“I didn’t take her.”
Matteo stepped forward.
“Where is Lily?”
“I swear, she was not supposed to be here.”
Anna lunged toward him.
Matteo caught her around the waist.
“Where is my daughter?” she screamed.
The man stumbled backward.
“Inside!”
Anna tore free and ran past him.
Matteo followed.
They found Lily in the living room.
She sat on a couch holding a paper cup of water.
A young woman stood ten feet away, crying.
Lily saw Anna.
“Mom!”
Anna dropped to her knees and pulled her daughter into her arms.
Matteo stopped in the doorway.
The world seemed to breathe again.
“Did they hurt you?” Anna asked.
Lily shook her head.
“Did they touch you?”
“No.”
“Did they give you medicine?”
“No.”
The young woman spoke. “I wouldn’t let him.”
Matteo looked at her.
“Who are you?”
“Rachel Wynn.”
Dante came in behind him.
His expression changed when he saw her.
“You.”
Rachel looked down.
Matteo asked, “You know her?”
“Former claims processor. One of Victor’s people.”
Rachel shook her head. “Not anymore.”
The man in scrubs stood in the hall.
“That is Dr. Malcolm Reed?” Anna asked.
“No,” Rachel said. “He is Aaron Kell. Medical technician.”
Aaron looked sick.
Matteo’s voice flattened. “You forged Reed’s signature.”
Aaron did not answer.
Rachel did.
“Yes.”
“Why bring Lily here?”
Rachel looked at Anna.
“Victor ordered a new video.”
Anna held Lily tighter.
“What kind of video?”
“Her walking.”
Matteo understood first.
“To update the fake disability file.”
Rachel nodded.
“The last footage was from the service entrance. He thought it looked too old.”
Anna’s face twisted with rage.
“You kidnapped my child for paperwork?”
Rachel started crying harder.
“I did not know they were going to take her from the house.”
“Who is they?” Matteo asked.
“A driver named Cole. Victor’s security man.”
“Where is he?”
“He left after dropping her.”
“Where is Victor?”
Rachel looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.”
Matteo stepped closer.
“Wrong answer.”
“I really don’t.”
Dante searched the rooms.
Anna focused on Lily.
“Why did you go with the man?”
Lily looked ashamed.
“He said you got hurt.”
Anna closed her eyes.
“He said Mr. Moretti sent him.”
Matteo looked away.
His name again.
Used as a key.
Used as a threat.
Used as permission.
Rachel reached slowly into her pocket.
Dante immediately moved.
“Hands where I can see them.”
“It’s a flash drive.”
She placed it on the table.
“What is on it?” Matteo asked.
“Identity files.”
“How many?”
“Hundreds.”
Dante stared.
Rachel continued.
“Household workers. Construction crews. Port employees. Drivers. Children. Spouses.”
Anna looked horrified.
“Children?”
Rachel nodded.
“Dependents are useful because nobody expects them to be operational identities.”
Matteo picked up the drive.
“Why give this to me?”
Rachel looked at Lily.
“Because Victor crossed a line.”
Dante laughed bitterly. “You worked for him while he stole people’s names.”
“I know.”
“And this is the line?”
“She is four.”
Matteo’s voice was quiet.
“There was always a line. You just kept moving it.”
Rachel cried silently.
Anna stood with Lily in her arms.
“We are leaving.”
Matteo nodded.
Then Aaron spoke from the hallway.
“You cannot just take the drive.”
Dante turned.
Aaron raised both hands.
“I mean—Victor will know.”
Matteo looked at him.
“How?”
“It checks in remotely when opened.”
Dante’s expression sharpened.
“Tracker?”
Aaron nodded.
Rachel went pale.
“I didn’t know that.”
Matteo looked at the flash drive in his hand.
“Good.”
Anna stared at him.
“Good?”
He placed the drive on the table.
“For the first time today, Victor thinks he knows where I am.”
Dante understood.
“You want him to come.”
Matteo’s face became unreadable.
“No.”
May you like
He looked at Lily.
“I want him to think I stayed.”
