Chapter 4 - Locker 317

The plan depended on Vittorio believing Alessandro was angry enough to become predictable.

That part required almost no acting.

At ten in the morning, Marco deliberately called Alessandro's corporate office from an unsecured line and announced that they were returning to the city through the east highway.

At ten fifteen, one of Alessandro's vehicles took the east highway.

Alessandro was not in it.

Neither was Sofia.

They traveled in Naomi's unmarked sedan by a rural road while Marco monitored company access logs remotely.

At ten twenty-three, Evan Holt opened the executive movement dashboard.

At ten twenty-five, he sent an encrypted message to an external number.

"Got him," Marco said through the secure call.

Alessandro leaned back.

"Do not confront him."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Marco was silent for a beat.

"I hired him. I would enjoy correcting the mistake personally."

"Later."

Sofia sat beside Naomi in the front this time.

"Is everyone you know dangerous?"

Alessandro looked at the back of her head.

"No."

"Most?"

"No."

"More than normal?"

Naomi answered, "Definitely."

Sofia nodded as though confirming a theory.

Central Station was crowded enough to hide them and dangerous enough to make Naomi unhappy.

They entered through a service corridor with transit police assistance. Locker 317 stood in an old baggage section scheduled for renovation.

"We document everything before touching it," Naomi said.

Sofia raised a hand.

"Can I stand close?"

Naomi looked at Alessandro.

He nodded.

"Close, but behind me."

The brass key turned smoothly.

Inside the locker were three items.

A red leather folder.

A cheap prepaid phone.

And a child's music box painted with white magnolias.

Sofia covered her mouth.

"That was Mama's."

Alessandro took it carefully.

"From when she was a child?"

"Grandma gave it to her. Mama kept documents under the velvet part."

Marco removed the lining.

Beneath it was a memory card sealed in plastic.

Naomi photographed it before bagging it.

The red folder contained insurance records from Lucia's car.

Alessandro scanned the first pages.

"These were issued two days before she died."

Naomi read over his shoulder.

"The vehicle was serviced. Brake line replacement."

"By whom?"

Marco turned the page.

"A garage owned by Dario Neri's brother-in-law."

Sofia's face went pale.

Alessandro closed the folder.

"She was murdered."

Naomi's voice was calm.

"We have suspicious evidence. We prove murder before we say it in public."

"My daughter is dead."

"And if you move too fast, the man responsible will claim a grieving billionaire manufactured a conspiracy because he wants custody of a child."

Alessandro stared at her.

"I dislike how reasonable you are."

"People usually do when they're furious."

The prepaid phone had one saved audio file.

Lucia's voice filled the narrow locker room.

Sofia froze.

"Mama."

Alessandro's hand went instinctively to her shoulder, then stopped before touching her.

Sofia reached back and took his hand herself.

The recording began with Lucia breathing hard.

"If you're hearing this, I didn't make it to Alessandro. I don't know whether he is the man my mother remembered or the man Moretti told us he became. But Sofia deserves the chance to find out."

Alessandro shut his eyes.

Lucia continued.

"Vittorio Moretti kept my mother hidden by controlling her identity documents and threatening to expose her under fraud charges he created himself. After my mother died, I found his old payment records. He was still paying people connected to North Star. I started looking because children were disappearing from the residence records. Not kidnapped. Moved on paper. Their names were used to claim donations and state reimbursements after they had gone to other placements. Some children had three active identities at once."

Naomi's face sharpened.

Fraud.

Identity manipulation.

A charity built on invisible children.

Lucia's voice trembled.

"I reported it anonymously. The report vanished. I contacted Romano Foundation compliance. No answer. Then a man followed me home."

Marco whispered a curse.

"Who handled compliance reports?" Naomi asked.

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Evan Holt's division receives system routing. But the chair's office can override investigations."

"Vittorio."

"Yes."

The recording continued.

"There is one person inside Moretti's organization who tried to help me. I don't know if I can trust him completely. His name is Adrian Vale. He told me the laundering accounts are protected by something called the Aurelia Ledger."

Alessandro frowned.

"Aurelia?"

Naomi looked around the station.

"Like the hotel?"

"The gala was at the Grand Aurelia. Vittorio chose the venue this year."

Lucia's voice became quieter.

"If you find the ledger, don't give it to one police officer, one lawyer, or one newspaper. Give it to all of them at once. Moretti survives by owning bottlenecks. He cannot own a flood."

The message ended.

Sofia did not cry.

That worried Alessandro more.

"You can cry," he said.

"I did already."

"There isn't a limit."

"I know."

She pressed her lips together.

"I just want to hear her again."

Naomi replayed the first ten seconds.

Sofia closed her eyes.

The sound of Lucia saying Sofia's name filled the room.

Alessandro looked away, unable to watch without breaking.

Marco inserted the memory card into an isolated forensic laptop.

The screen showed dozens of files.

Bank transfers.

Shelter rosters.

Video clips.

Email screenshots.

One folder was labeled MAGNOLIA.

Inside was a scanned letter from Elena to Vittorio.

You promised Alessandro would be safe if I disappeared. If you touch my daughter, I will tell him everything even if it destroys me.

Vittorio's reply was only one line.

You misunderstand the arrangement. Silence is not purchased once.

Alessandro's face became stone.

"He kept threatening her for years."

Naomi nodded.

"And Lucia inherited the threat when Elena died."

Marco opened another file.

A photograph of Vittorio with Evan Holt.

A second photograph showed Dario Neri.

The third showed someone Alessandro recognized immediately.

"No."

Naomi leaned closer.

"Who is that?"

"Samuel Price."

"Your attorney?"

"My personal attorney for fourteen years."

Marco's voice dropped.

"He also drafted the foundation governance amendments."

A document beside the photograph listed scheduled payments to Price.

Some were old.

One was from the previous week.

Sofia looked at Alessandro.

"Another wrong person?"

He did not defend himself.

"Yes."

The truth was becoming unbearable not because Vittorio had enemies everywhere, but because Alessandro had unknowingly placed them beside him.

His phone vibrated.

Samuel Price's name appeared.

Everyone stared at it.

Naomi held up one finger.

"Answer normally."

Alessandro put the call on speaker without announcing it.

"Samuel."

"Alessandro, thank God. Where are you?"

"On my way back."

"We have a serious problem. Child Protection has filed an emergency petition. Moretti is trying to help contain the publicity, but the press already has a story about you removing a vulnerable child from state care."

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"How generous of Vittorio."

"He is trying to protect you."

Sofia's eyes narrowed.

Samuel continued.

"I need you to bring the girl to my office. Quietly. We can arrange a private placement and keep this from becoming a scandal."

Naomi wrote two words on a notepad.

KEEP TALKING.

Alessandro said, "Why your office?"

"Because reporters are watching the penthouse."

"How do you know where I am?"

A pause.

Tiny.

Fatal.

"I assumed."

"You said reporters are watching my penthouse."

"They are."

"That wasn't my question."

Samuel exhaled.

"Alessandro, you're exhausted. Don't turn this into an interrogation."

"Interesting advice from my lawyer."

"Bring Sofia to me."

Sofia flinched hearing her name.

Alessandro's voice became very quiet.

"I never told you her name."

The line went silent.

Then disconnected.

Marco was already moving.

"I'll have a team at Price's office in six minutes."

Naomi grabbed her coat.

"Police first. Your people observe."

"Fine."

Sofia looked at the music box.

"Mama knew this would happen."

Alessandro took the little box and placed it in her hands.

"Your mother knew enough to leave a path."

"Did she know you would follow it?"

He looked at the silver heart under his shirt.

"I hope so."

An alarm sounded somewhere in the station.

Marco checked his phone.

"Fire alarm. No reported fire."

Naomi's expression changed.

"Move. Now."

Smoke began seeping under the locker-room door.

Sofia clutched the music box.

Alessandro reached for her hand.

Outside, people started shouting.

And on Marco's forensic laptop, a small red message appeared across the screen.

REMOTE WIPE INITIATED.
