Chapter 3 - The Son Nobody Mentioned

Elena read the message aloud once.
Then no one spoke.
Rafael was the first to move.
"His son?"
Elena looked at the screen.
"She said my son. She didn't say his."
Clara leaned over the phone.
"Don't assume. Ask."
Elena's fingers felt stiff.
She typed slowly.
What happened at San Felipe?
The reply did not come immediately.
Instead, the foreign number called.
Video.
Elena stared at the screen.
Rafael stepped closer.
"You don't have to answer."
"I know."
She accepted.
For a moment there was only darkness.
Then a woman's face appeared.
Mariana Salcedo looked older than the photograph in unit 317, but not dramatically so. Her dark hair was shorter. There were faint lines around her eyes. Behind her was a white kitchen wall and a window filled with morning light.
She did not say hello.
She looked directly at Elena's bruised face.
"How old is Nicolás?"
"Seven months."
Mariana closed her eyes.
"And you are not at the house?"
"No. I'm with my father."
"Alejandro knows where?"
"Yes."
"Then he will not come himself. He will use lawyers first."
Clara glanced at Rafael.
Elena held the phone tighter.
"How do you know my son's name?"
Mariana looked away from the camera.
"Because I still read the news from home. Your pregnancy announcement was everywhere. So was his birth."
"And San Felipe?"
Mariana's face changed.
"Because that is where he took Mateo."
Elena's heartbeat quickened.
"Who is Mateo?"
For several seconds, Mariana said nothing.
Then a boy's voice sounded faintly from somewhere behind her.
"Mamá?"
Mariana turned.
"Un minuto, cariño."
A child crossed the far edge of the frame carrying a blue backpack.
Elena saw him for less than two seconds.
Dark hair.
Long legs.
A familiar way of tilting his head.
Mariana turned back.
"Mateo is my son."
Elena swallowed.
"Is he Alejandro's?"
Mariana did not soften the answer.
"Yes."
Rafael sat down.
Elena felt nothing at first.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Only a blank space where the next thought should have been.
"How old?"
"Eight."
"Does he know?"
"Mateo knows his father lives in another country and is not part of our lives. He does not know the full story."
Elena looked toward the evidence boxes.
"Alejandro told me he had never had children before Nicolás."
Mariana's expression tightened.
"He told people Mateo might not be his. Privately, he never doubted it."
"Was there a paternity test?"
"Yes."
"Where is it?"
"With me."
Clara leaned closer to Elena.
"Ask whether she is willing to share it with counsel, not publicly."
Mariana heard her.
"Who is that?"
"Clara Benítez. My lawyer."
"Family lawyer?"
"Today she's my lawyer."
Mariana studied the screen.
"Good. Keep it that way."
Elena's throat tightened.
"Tell me about San Felipe."
Mariana sat at a small table.
"After I left him, Alejandro became obsessed with the idea that I would take Mateo away. At first he wanted me back. Then when I refused, he wanted leverage."
"Custody."
"Not exactly. Control. Custody was the instrument."
She reached off screen and returned with a folder.
"Mateo was three. Healthy. Shy with strangers. Alejandro insisted on a developmental evaluation at San Felipe because he said Mateo was too attached to me."
Elena frowned.
"That's not a diagnosis."
"No. But the clinic produced a report claiming I showed signs of pathological anxiety and that my behavior could interfere with Mateo's emotional development."
Clara's face hardened.
"Did they evaluate you?"
"For forty minutes."
"By whom?"
"Dr. Tomás Echevarría."
The name from the letter.
Rafael whispered, "The psychiatrist who never treated you."
Mariana nodded.
"He did not treat me. He interviewed me once after I had been awake nearly two days, recovering from a fractured wrist, terrified that Alejandro would take my child."
Elena felt sick.
"And he called you unstable."
"He used more expensive words."
"What did Alejandro do with the report?"
"He had his lawyer draft an emergency custody petition. It said I was planning to flee, that I had become paranoid, that I had accused him of financial crimes because of mental instability."
"Did he file it?"
"Not then. He showed it to me."
Elena understood.
"A threat."
"Yes. He said if I signed the settlement, resigned, surrendered the copies of company records, and agreed never to identify him publicly as Mateo's father, he would not seek custody."
Rafael stood abruptly.
"That settlement passed through my office."
Mariana looked at him for the first time.
Her eyes sharpened.
"Rafael Montes."
"Yes."
"You signed it."
"Yes."
"Did you know?"
"No."
"That answer used to make me very angry."
Rafael did not defend himself.
"It should have."
Mariana's expression shifted slightly.
"You really didn't know."
"No. But I built a system where my signature could be used without my attention. I won't ask you to treat that as innocence."
Mariana looked away.
"I don't know what to do with an apology from you."
"You don't have to do anything with it."
Elena watched her father carefully.
There was no performance in him.
Only shame.
Mariana looked back at Elena.
"Has Alejandro suggested San Felipe for Nicolás?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He said Nicolás had feeding issues and wanted a pediatric specialist."
"Does he?"
"He spits up sometimes. His pediatrician said it's normal."
Mariana's face went pale.
"Did Alejandro schedule it?"
Elena's mind raced backward.
An email.
A calendar invitation.
A conversation over breakfast.
"He told me his office would coordinate it."
"Call your pediatrician. Ask whether there was a referral."
Clara was already dialing.
Ten minutes later, Elena stood in the corridor while Clara spoke with the pediatric office.
Rafael waited beside her.
"You don't have to hear everything at once," he said.
Elena stared at him.
"Please stop telling me what I don't have to do."
He blinked.
"You're right."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be."
She rubbed her forehead.
"I can't tell which part makes me angrier. That he has another son. That he lied about him. That he did this to Mariana. Or that he had already started building the same story around me."
Rafael said nothing.
Clara came back.
"There was no referral."
Elena's stomach dropped.
"None?"
"Your pediatrician has no record of recommending San Felipe. The appointment request came directly from Alejandro's executive assistant."
Mariana was still on video inside the unit.
Elena returned and sat in front of the phone.
"No referral."
Mariana nodded as if she had expected it.
"Then he was preparing."
"For what?"
"I can't know. But with me, he prepared before he acted."
"Why now?"
Mariana hesitated.
"Were you planning to leave him before last night?"
"No."
"Were you challenging him about money?"
Elena thought of the last two months.
Alejandro irritated when she asked why a household account had been closed.
Alejandro dismissing questions about a villa purchase.
Alejandro telling her to stop involving herself in company matters.
"I asked about transfers from a family investment account."
Rafael turned.
"What transfers?"
Elena looked at him.
"I didn't tell you because I thought it was marital finances. Almost nine million over six months. Alejandro said it was being restructured."
Rafael's expression became severe.
"From which account?"
She named it.
He swore softly.
"That account holds restricted family capital. He cannot transfer from it without a dual authorization."
Clara looked at him.
"Whose second authorization?"
Rafael's face changed.
"Elena's."
Elena stared.
"I never signed anything."
No one spoke.
Mariana leaned toward the camera.
"Then check your signatures."
Isabel entered from the corridor carrying a tablet.
"We just imaged the old laptop. There's an encrypted directory named MATEO."
Mariana went very still.
"Don't open it without me."
Isabel stopped.
"Why?"
"Because I encrypted it."
"Do you have the password?"
"Yes."
Clara asked, "Will you provide it?"
Mariana looked at Elena.
"If she wants me involved."
Elena felt the full strangeness of the moment.
A woman her husband had erased.
A son he had denied.
A hidden room.
A clinic appointment waiting on a calendar.
She thought of Nicolás sleeping in her childhood bedroom.
"I want the truth," Elena said. "But not if getting it puts you or Mateo in danger."
Mariana's eyes filled unexpectedly.
"No one asked me that the first time."
Elena swallowed.
"I'm asking now."
Mariana nodded.
"Then yes. I'm involved."
"Will you come back?"
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because Alejandro thinks fear is strongest when you're alone. I need to know you're not temporary courage after a bad night."
Elena almost recoiled.
Then she understood the question beneath the insult.
"How will you know?"
Mariana looked at the bruise on Elena's face.
"When he apologizes."
"What?"
"He will apologize. He will cry. He will blame pressure. He will say he barely touched you. He will tell you Nicolás needs both parents. He will promise therapy."
Her voice trembled.
"And if you still want the truth after that, call me again."
The video ended.
Elena stared at the blank screen.
Her phone vibrated almost immediately.
Alejandro.
One message.
PLEASE COME HOME. I AM SORRY.
A second arrived.
I LOST CONTROL FOR ONE SECOND.
A third.
NICOLÁS DESERVES BOTH OF US.
Then a fourth.
I'LL GET HELP.
Elena closed her eyes.
Mariana had predicted every sentence.
Not approximately.
Exactly.
Rafael saw the messages.
"What do you want to do?"
Elena looked at him.
For once, he had not told her what she should do.
"I want screenshots."
Clara nodded.
"Good."
"Then I want every San Felipe record connected to my name, Nicolás's name, and Mateo's name preserved."
"I'll seek an emergency order."
"And the nine million."
Rafael's expression hardened.
"I'll freeze any transfer authority I legally control."
May you like
Elena picked up Mariana's photograph from the evidence sheet.
"Then we're going to find out what he was preparing before I ever knew I needed to run."
