Chapter 3 - The Name in the Ledger

For several seconds, Elena heard nothing except the steady pulse of Gabriel's heart monitor.
Her father's face flashed through her mind.
Miguel Reyes laughing as he tried to fix a toaster with the wrong screwdriver.
Miguel teaching Mateo to ride a bicycle.
Miguel leaving for work before sunrise in a faded blue jacket.
Miguel dead beneath twisted steel at a construction site two years later.
She looked at Evelyn.
"My father died in a crane collapse."
"That is what the report says."
"You said he found this room."
"He was part of a renovation crew."
Elena's hands began to shake.
"Was he killed?"
Owen shifted.
The nurse closed her eyes.
Evelyn did not answer quickly enough.
Elena stepped closer.
"Was my father killed?"
"Not by my order."
"That wasn't my question."
Noah was crying harder now.
Gabriel reached for him, his thin fingers trembling.
"Don't fight," he whispered.
Elena turned toward the bed.
The sound of Gabriel's voice changed everything.
This was not a secret.
This was a seven-year-old boy listening to adults discuss whether his existence was worth protecting.
Elena forced herself to breathe.
"What's your name?" she asked the nurse.
"Miriam Holt."
"How long have you cared for Gabriel?"
Miriam looked at Evelyn.
Elena snapped, "Look at me."
Miriam did.
"Four years."
"Where was he before that?"
"Private facilities."
"Plural?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
"I don't know."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"This is not the place."
"You're right."
Elena pulled out her phone.
"I'm calling Richard."
Owen moved before she finished.
Not violently.
But fast.
His hand closed over the phone.
Elena slapped him.
The sound cracked through the medical room.
Owen released her instantly.
"Do that again," Elena said, "and I scream until every employee in this house comes down here."
Owen looked at Evelyn.
Something passed between them.
Then Evelyn said, "Let her call."
Elena dialed Richard.
He answered on the second ring.
"Is Noah all right?"
"No."
Richard's voice changed.
"What happened?"
"Come home."
"Elena—"
"Your son is alive."
Silence.
"What?"
"Gabriel."
There was another silence.
Longer.
Then Richard whispered, "Don't say that name."
Elena felt cold.
"Come home."
"Who told you?"
"No one. I'm looking at him."
The line went dead.
Evelyn sighed.
"You have made this more difficult."
Elena stared at her.
"Good."
Richard arrived thirty-seven minutes later.
Elena knew because she counted every minute.
No one was allowed to leave the medical suite.
Owen dismissed the other guards.
Miriam checked Gabriel's feeding line.
Noah sat on the bed holding his twin's hand.
Evelyn stood near the door as if she were waiting for a board meeting.
Richard entered at a run.
He stopped so suddenly his shoulder hit the frame.
His face emptied.
Gabriel stared back at him.
No one spoke.
Richard took one step.
Then another.
His knees seemed to fail.
He caught the edge of a chair.
"No."
Gabriel watched him with solemn eyes.
Richard's voice broke.
"No."
He looked at Evelyn.
"What is this?"
"Richard."
"What is this?"
His shout made Noah flinch.
Elena moved beside him.
Richard saw the movement.
He lowered his voice.
"My son died."
Evelyn said, "He nearly did."
"You gave me ashes."
"They were hospital remains."
Richard's face twisted.
"You let me bury a box."
"To protect you."
"From what?"
"From prison. From scandal. From losing everything."
Richard laughed once.
It was an ugly sound.
"What did you do?"
Evelyn looked at Miriam.
"Take the children upstairs."
Gabriel said, "No."
Everyone turned.
His voice was weak but clear.
"I want to hear."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"Gabriel."
"My name is Gabriel."
Noah squeezed his hand.
Elena felt tears sting her eyes.
Richard moved closer to the bed.
"May I?"
Gabriel hesitated.
Then nodded.
Richard sat.
For several seconds, he only looked at him.
"Do you know who I am?"
Gabriel's eyes filled.
"My father."
Richard covered his mouth.
Noah climbed beside him.
"He knew."
Richard looked at Noah.
"You knew?"
"Since Christmas."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Noah began to shake.
"Grandma said you'd send him away."
Richard turned toward Evelyn so slowly that Elena almost stepped back.
"What did you tell my son?"
"What was necessary."
Richard stood.
"Get out."
Evelyn blinked.
"This is my house."
"No."
Richard's voice became very calm.
"It was Father's. Then mine. Your name is not on the deed."
Evelyn stared at him.
"You are emotional."
"I am looking at the child you told me I cremated."
"Richard—"
"Get out."
Owen opened the door.
For the first time, Evelyn looked old.
She left without another word.
Richard turned to Miriam.
"Tell me everything."
Miriam hesitated.
Elena said, "Start with why Gabriel is here."
Miriam looked at Gabriel.
"You shouldn't hear this."
He answered, "I already lived it."
Miriam swallowed.
"The twins were born eleven weeks early. Both had respiratory failure. Noah improved. Gabriel didn't."
Richard nodded slowly.
"I remember."
"Your mother brought in Dr. Julian Mercer."
Richard's face darkened.
"He was head of neonatal research."
"At Hawthorne Biomed."
"Yes."
Miriam continued.
"There was an experimental gene-regulation treatment. Project Lark."
Richard stared.
"That program never entered human trials."
Miriam's eyes filled.
"Officially."
Elena felt her skin prickle.
"What happened?"
"Mrs. Hawthorne authorized emergency use on both boys."
Richard stepped back.
"No. I signed compassionate-use forms."
"You signed for a different protocol."
"Mercer told me—"
"He lied."
Miriam looked at Gabriel.
"Noah responded well. Gabriel developed seizures, nerve damage, and severe muscle weakness."
Richard whispered, "And then they told us he coded."
"He did. For seven minutes."
"But he lived."
"Yes."
"Why hide him?"
Miriam's answer was almost inaudible.
"Because he was proof."
Elena looked at Richard.
"Proof of an illegal human trial."
Miriam nodded.
"And he wasn't the only child."
The room went quiet again.
"How many?" Richard asked.
"At least nine."
Elena's stomach turned.
"Where are they?"
"I don't know."
Richard gripped the chair.
"My mother did this?"
"She funded it. Mercer ran it."
Elena thought of her father.
"And Miguel Reyes?"
Miriam's eyes shifted toward her.
"He found patient records during the renovation."
"What renovation?"
"The old clinic building. Three years ago."
Elena remembered Noah pointing through the trees.
The guesthouse.
The old clinic.
"He copied something," Miriam continued. "He said he was going to the state."
Elena's throat closed.
"Who knew?"
"Mercer. Mrs. Hawthorne. Security."
"Owen?"
Owen spoke from the doorway.
"I wasn't security chief then."
"Who was?"
"Caleb Voss."
Elena knew the name.
It had appeared in the accident report.
Site safety coordinator.
"He signed the statement saying my father ignored a barrier."
Owen nodded.
Elena wanted to be sick.
Richard looked at Owen.
"Find Voss."
"I already tried."
"What do you mean?"
"He disappeared eighteen months ago."
Richard rubbed both hands over his face.
"Where is Mercer?"
"Boston," Owen said. "Board retreat."
"Bring him back."
"I can't compel him."
Richard looked at him.
"Then tell him my mother needs him."
Owen understood.
"That might work."
Elena turned to Miriam.
"You said my father copied something."
"I saw a blue flash drive once."
"Where?"
"In his hand."
"Did anyone recover it?"
"I don't know."
Elena closed her eyes.
A blue flash drive.
Her father had owned dozens.
Then she remembered a metal toolbox Rosa refused to throw away.
A cracked red toolbox beneath the kitchen sink.
Full of screws, receipts, old cables.
Her heart began to pound.
"I need to go home."
Richard looked at her.
"Not alone."
"I don't need protection from you."
"Maybe not from me."
His eyes moved toward the door Evelyn had used.
"But you need it from someone."
At sunrise, Elena and Owen drove to Bridgeport.
Rosa Reyes opened the apartment door wearing slippers and fear.
"Elena?"
"Mom, I need Dad's toolbox."
Rosa looked at Owen.
"Who is he?"
"A mistake I'll explain later."
Owen almost smiled.
Rosa did not.
The toolbox sat where Elena remembered.
She dumped it onto the kitchen table.
Screwdrivers.
Bolts.
Old receipts.
A tape measure.
No drive.
Mateo came out of his room.
"What happened?"
"Help me."
They searched every compartment.
Nothing.
Rosa stood by the counter.
"Your father gave me something before he died."
Elena stopped.
"What?"
"He said if anyone from Hawthorne ever came asking, I should burn it."
Owen's eyes sharpened.
"Where is it?"
Rosa looked terrified.
"I didn't burn it."
She disappeared into her bedroom.
When she returned, she held a small plastic bag.
Inside was a blue flash drive.
Taped to it was a folded piece of paper.
Elena opened it.
Her father's handwriting filled one line.
THE HOUSE REMEMBERS WHAT MONEY TRIES TO BURY.
Below it was a list of initials.

G.H.
M.S.
A.R.
J.C.

Twelve children in all.
