Chapter 8 - What Belini Finally Admitted

Belini’s statement lasted five hours.

She asked for no deal at first.

Detective Voss gave her none.

Luca listened from the other side of the glass.

Emma sat beside him.

Neither spoke until Belini reached the night Alessandro died.

“My father told me Alessandro was sick.”

Voss asked, “Did you believe him?”

“I wanted to.”

“That is not an answer.”

Belini looked down.

“No.”

“Did you know medication had been switched?”

“Not until afterward.”

“How afterward?”

“Three days.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Belini looked through the glass.

Straight at Luca.

Even though she could not see him clearly.

“Because my father showed me pictures of Luca leaving Lily’s preschool.”

Emma went cold.

Luca’s chair moved backward.

Matteo stopped him with one hand.

“Boss.”

Luca sat again.

Barely.

Belini continued.

“I believed if I stayed close, I could keep Vittorio satisfied.”

Voss asked, “By becoming Luca’s fiancée?”

“By becoming useful.”

“You also helped move millions.”

“Yes.”

“You helped prepare documents designed to erase Emma Reed’s claim.”

“Yes.”

“You imprisoned her.”

Belini’s voice broke.

“Yes.”

“You assaulted a five-year-old child.”

Belini closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

No excuse followed.

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

Enzo’s interview was worse.

He had moved money.

Paid the nurse who changed Alessandro’s medication.

Paid security men.

Paid private investigators.

He claimed he never knew why until too late.

Voss did not believe him.

Neither did Luca.

By morning, three accounts had been frozen.

Two former Moretti lawyers were in custody.

The nurse had been found in Florida.

Vittorio’s network was collapsing faster than he could call anyone from a holding cell.

Emma thought that would feel satisfying.

It did not.

Truth was heavier than revenge.

Helena found her in the mansion library after sunrise.

Lily slept upstairs with Matteo’s wife watching her.

Luca had not slept at all.

Helena placed a thin folder in front of Emma.

“Daniel’s trust.”

Emma did not open it.

“How much?”

“That is the wrong question.”

“It is the first question everyone else will ask.”

“Then let them.”

Emma finally opened the folder.

The numbers were large.

Uncomfortably large.

She closed it again.

“I don’t want money that came from any of this.”

“It did not.”

Helena’s voice sharpened.

“Daniel’s shares were legitimate. Vittorio stole the income. Recovering it is not accepting his crime.”

Luca stood in the doorway.

Emma had not heard him enter.

“What do you want to do?”

She looked at him.

“With the shares?”

“With all of it.”

That included more than money.

Belini.

Lily.

The Moretti name.

The years Alessandro had watched her without telling her who she was.

Emma looked toward the brass key on the table.

“I want Lily out of every document the Bellinis touched.”

“Done.”

“I want Daniel Reed’s name restored to the companies he built.”

Luca nodded.

“Done.”

“I want the stolen money traced.”

“It will be.”

“And I want the clean companies separated from anything criminal.”

That one took longer.

Luca looked at her.

Helena did too.

Emma did not look away.

“You asked what I want.”

Luca slowly nodded.

“I did.”

“Then that.”

He picked up the trust folder.

“My father spent his life building walls between the two worlds.”

“And failed.”

“Yes.”

The answer came without defense.

Emma softened slightly.

Luca continued.

“So maybe we stop building walls.”

“What do we build?”

“Something Lily can inherit without needing a secret room.”

For the first time since the archive opened, Emma smiled.

Small.

Tired.

Real.

Matteo appeared in the doorway.

“Boss.”

Luca turned.

“We found one more envelope in Alessandro’s safe.”

“For who?”

Matteo looked at Emma.

Then at the staircase.

“For Lily.”

Luca’s face changed.

Emma stood.

On the front of the envelope, Alessandro had written only six words.

WHEN THE HOUSE IS SAFE, GIVE HER THIS.
