Chapter 6 - Anthony Marchetti Comes Back

Anthony was waiting in a church basement.
Not a hotel.
Not a safe house.
A church.
Caitlyn entered first.
He stood when he saw her.
Sixty-one.
Thinner.
Gray hair.
A scar along one cheek.
Alive.
Caitlyn stopped.
“No.”
Anthony’s face broke.
“Cait.”
She slapped him.
Hard.
He did not move.
“You died.”
“I know.”
She slapped him again.
“You let Mom bury you.”
“I know.”
She began hitting his chest.
Not hard anymore.
Just grief.
“You left us.”
Anthony caught her wrists.
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
Caitlyn screamed:
“We were not alive.”
Silence.
Anthony released her.
Santino stood near the doorway.
Walter beside him.
Anthony saw Santino.
His face changed.
“Elena’s son.”
Santino stared.
“You knew my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You used her.”
Anthony shook his head.
“No.”
“You brought her evidence.”
“Yes.”
“You knew that put her at risk.”
“Yes.”
“That is use.”
Anthony looked down.
“Maybe.”
Santino respected the answer.
Caitlyn stared at her father.
“Why fake your death?”
Anthony took a breath.
“Peter Quinn found me.”
Walter flinched.
“My brother.”
Anthony nodded.
“He told me Lorenzo knew I still had copies.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Anthony looked at Santino.
“Not anymore.”
“What does that mean?”
“I gave them to Elena.”
Santino frowned.
“The bank box.”
“Yes.”
“So why was Lorenzo still after you?”
“Because he thought I kept originals.”
“Did you?”
Anthony hesitated.
Santino saw.
“Yes.”
Anthony nodded.
Caitlyn stared.
“Where?”
Anthony looked at her.
“In your mother’s name.”
Helen.
Caitlyn whispered:
“Mom knows?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“A trust.”
Santino frowned.
“What trust?”
Anthony looked at him.
“Marchetti Health Trust.”
Caitlyn stared.
“I have never heard of it.”
“You were not supposed to.”
“Why?”
“Because it owns something.”
“What?”
Anthony answered:
“Saint Matthew’s Clinic.”
Silence.
Santino stepped forward.
“Your family owns the clinic.”
Anthony nodded.
“Part of it.”
Walter stared.
Caitlyn looked horrified.
“My mother could not afford dialysis while we owned a clinic?”
Anthony closed his eyes.
“That is the cruelty of it.”
Caitlyn stared.
“Explain.”
Anthony continued.
“Lorenzo used my name to create the trust.”
“For money laundering.”
“Yes.”
“He made you appear to own part of Saint Matthew’s.”
“Yes.”
“And after you disappeared?”
“The trust remained.”
Caitlyn’s voice broke.
“So Mom and I had legal ownership.”
“On paper.”
“And no access.”
“No.”
Santino looked at Anthony.
“Who controls it now?”
Anthony looked at Walter.
“Peter.”
Walter went still.
Santino’s face hardened.
“The dead brother.”
“Yes.”
Anthony continued.
“Peter used the trust to keep Saint Matthew’s outside normal audits.”
“Why?”
“Private patients.”
“Medication.”
“Yes.”
Santino looked at Caitlyn.
“Your mother’s Medicare applications.”
She frowned.
Anthony looked ashamed.
“What?”
Caitlyn stared at him.
“Say it.”
Anthony whispered:
“Peter blocked them.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“To force you to use private treatment.”
Caitlyn’s face changed.
“To make us desperate.”
“Yes.”
“So I would sell something.”
Anthony shook his head.
“No.”
Santino understood first.
“So she would come back into the system.”
Anthony nodded.
Caitlyn stared.
“Peter wanted Mom at Saint Matthew’s.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Helen remembers something.”
Caitlyn stopped.
“What?”
Anthony looked toward the church stairs.
“Your mother worked there.”
Caitlyn stared.
“No.”
“Before you were born.”
“She was a seamstress.”
“Later.”
Anthony continued.
“She was a nurse first.”
Caitlyn’s mouth opened.
No sound.
Santino looked at Anthony.
“What did she see?”
Anthony answered:
“Lorenzo and Peter moving patient files.”
Walter sat down.
Anthony continued.
“She saw the first altered prescription.”
Santino’s mother.
Elena Ferraro.
Caitlyn whispered:
“Mom knew all along.”
Anthony shook his head.
“She forgot.”
“What?”
“After an accident.”
“What accident?”
Anthony’s eyes filled.
“The reason she walks with a cane.”
Silence.
Caitlyn stopped breathing.
May you like
Anthony whispered:
“It was not an accident.”
