Chapter 7 - Henry's Last Secret

The car stopped beneath an overpass.

Marcus ordered the driver to pull over.

No one moved.

Henry looked seventy-six again.

Older than before.

Marcus stared at him.

"You took the archive."

Henry nodded.

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"Why?"

"To keep it away from Edward."

Marcus laughed.

"You brought me evidence tonight while hiding more evidence somewhere else."

"Yes."

"Where is it?"

Henry said nothing.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Henry."

"It's safe."

"That is not an answer."

Henry looked at Sarah's name on Marcus's phone.

Then at Marcus.

"Your father did not trust you."

Marcus went still.

Adriana whispered:

"Henry."

He continued.

"Not because he hated you."

Marcus said:

"Keep talking."

"Because by 2018, you had built your own organization."

Marcus's expression darkened.

"Businesses."

"Some legitimate."

Marcus said nothing.

Henry continued:

"Some not."

I looked at Marcus.

Everyone knew rumors.

No one on staff asked questions.

Henry said:

"Daniel feared you had become too much like him."

Marcus asked:

"So you were supposed to judge me?"

"Yes."

"Who gave you that right?"

"Your father."

Marcus looked away.

Then back.

"And your decision?"

Henry reached inside his coat.

Adriana tensed.

He removed a small silver key.

Placed it on the table between them.

"My decision is that you deserve the truth."

Marcus stared at the key.

Henry continued:

"The archive is at the Bell house."

Adriana looked up.

"What?"

Henry nodded.

"In Edward's private safe."

Marcus almost laughed.

"You hid it in his house?"

"The safest place to hide something from a man like Edward is where he believes he controls every object."

Adriana stared.

"My code."

Henry looked at her.

"You just gave Marcus the one thing I needed."

Marcus took the silver key.

"What does it open?"

"The inner box."

He looked at Sarah's call.

"Mom."

"I'm here."

Marcus asked:

"Did you know Henry took it?"

"No."

Henry lowered his eyes.

Sarah continued:

"But Daniel trusted him with impossible choices."

Marcus replied:

"Everyone keeps using Dad as an excuse."

Sarah went quiet.

Then said:

"You're right."

Marcus did not expect that.

She continued:

"Daniel was not a saint."

Marcus looked at the old letters beside him.

"He lied."

"Yes."

"He hid."

"Yes."

"He let me believe he was dead."

"Yes."

Sarah's voice trembled.

"And I let you believe I was dead too."

Marcus closed his eyes.

No one spoke.

Sarah said:

"I thought survival was the same as protecting you."

A pause.

"It wasn't."

Marcus whispered:

"Why didn't you come back after Edward stopped looking?"

"He never stopped."

Marcus looked at Adriana.

Sarah continued:

"Then Daniel got sick."

She took a breath.

"He asked me to contact you."

Marcus opened his eyes.

"You didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I was angry."

The truth landed harder than another excuse.

Sarah continued:

"I had lost twenty years."

"Because of him?"

"Because of Edward."

A pause.

"Because of Daniel."

Another.

"Because of me."

Marcus said nothing.

"I wanted one year where I wasn't running toward the Vale family or away from it."

Marcus looked out at the rain.

Sarah whispered:

"Then one year became two."

Daniel died in 2019.

It was now Christmas 2026.

Seven years.

Marcus asked:

"Why now?"

Sarah answered:

"Because Edward found me last month."

Adriana went pale.

Marcus looked at her.

Sarah continued:

"He sent a photograph to my apartment."

Marcus remembered Adriana saying Edward had a recent photograph.

Sarah said:

"On the back, he wrote: CHRISTMAS ENDS OLD STORIES."

Marcus's face changed.

Henry whispered:

"He was planning something."

Sarah answered:

"Yes."

Marcus asked:

"What?"

"I don't know."

Then Adriana spoke.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

"My grandfather wanted Marcus to sign the Bell-Vale consolidation papers tonight."

Marcus frowned.

"What papers?"

"The ones he said were engagement documents."

Marcus stared.

Adriana continued:

"They weren't."

"What were they?"

"Control transfers."

Henry swore under his breath.

Marcus said:

"Control of what?"

Adriana looked at him.

"Your father's old accounts."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"If I signed?"

"Edward could move everything before the federal archive surfaced."

Henry whispered:

"And erase twenty years of trails."

Marcus looked at Adriana.

"You knew?"

"Not until this morning."

"And you still came."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To stop him."

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"By tearing up my father's drawing?"

Adriana looked down.

"I made the wrong choice first."

Marcus waited.

She continued:

"Then I made another one."

"What?"

"I never put the real consolidation papers in the folder."

Marcus looked at her.

"Where are they?"

"In my grandfather's safe."

Henry held up the silver key.

The pieces connected.

The archive.

The contracts.

The photograph.

The safe.

Marcus told the driver:

"Bell house."

Sarah interrupted.

"No."

Marcus looked at the phone.

"Why?"

"Because Edward just arrived here."

Marcus went still.

At the Vale estate.

With Sarah.

Marcus said:

"Lock yourself in."

Sarah replied:

"I did."

Then we heard glass break through the phone.

Marcus stood.

"Mom?"

No answer.

"Mom!"

A man's voice came through the line.

Edward Bell.

"Bring me the key, Marcus."

Marcus's face turned cold.

May you like

Edward continued:

"And your mother gets to survive Christmas twice."
