Chapter 8 - The Man Who Sold Moretti Secrets

Palermo greeted them with rain.

Emma barely noticed.

The Moretti archive stood beneath an old family palazzo overlooking the harbor.

No cameras.

No modern locks.

Only stone, iron, and men who had served the family long enough to remember Vittorio before Luca was born.

When Luca entered, conversations stopped.

When Emma entered behind him wearing Isabel’s medallion, several older men stood.

One crossed himself.

Emma hated that.

She did not want to be a ghost.

She wanted answers.

Dante found Gabriel Rinaldi in the lower archive.

He was not running.

He was sitting at a table with the black case in front of him.

Vincent Vescari was gone.

Luca stopped ten feet away.

“Where is he?”

Rinaldi looked tired.

“Already left.”

Dante’s men spread through the room.

Rinaldi did not resist.

Emma stepped forward.

“You knew my mother.”

The attorney looked at her.

His face changed.

“Isabel.”

“No.”

Emma’s voice hardened.

“Emma.”

Rinaldi lowered his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

She almost struck him.

Instead she asked, “For which part?”

He did not answer.

Luca placed one hand on the black case.

“Open it.”

Rinaldi looked at him.

“Your father told me never to.”

“My father is dead.”

“That was the problem.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

Rinaldi took a brass key from his pocket.

Dante stopped him.

“Slowly.”

The case opened.

Inside were original trust papers.

A cassette recorder.

Three sealed legal statements.

And Isabel’s accident file.

Emma stared at it.

Rinaldi reached for the file.

She took it first.

The report confirmed Belini’s story.

Hit-and-run.

Two blocks from Isabel’s apartment.

Internal injuries.

Delayed treatment.

Death three days later.

Emma read the driver description.

Male.

Dark sedan.

Partial plate.

She looked up.

“Who?”

Rinaldi’s silence answered before his mouth did.

Luca leaned closer.

“Who?”

“Vincent ordered surveillance. Not murder.”

Emma’s voice shook.

“That is not what I asked.”

Rinaldi closed his eyes.

“The driver was Marco Vescari.”

Belini’s uncle.

Emma remembered the name from society pages.

Dead six years.

“Why did he hit her?”

“He wanted the case.”

Rinaldi nodded toward the black box.

“Isabel had retrieved it from a Moretti storage unit. Vincent believed it contained evidence.”

“And it did.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at the accident report.

“My mother came home after this.”

“She escaped.”

“For three days.”

Rinaldi could not look at her.

“By the time I learned what happened, she was already in the hospital.”

“You were Vittorio’s attorney.”

“Yes.”

“You were supposed to protect her.”

“Yes.”

“Instead you took Vescari money.”

Rinaldi’s face tightened.

“To keep them from finding you.”

Emma laughed in disbelief.

“That is your defense?”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“It is the truth.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

Rinaldi opened one of the sealed statements.

After Isabel died, Vincent demanded every record connected to Emma.

Rinaldi gave him false addresses.

False school registrations.

False medical records.

In return, he accepted payments so Vincent would believe he had been bought.

Emma stared.

“You expect me to believe you were protecting me.”

“No.”

Rinaldi’s voice broke for the first time.

“I expect you to understand why I became someone worth hating.”

Dante looked at the payment ledger.

“The false trail checks out.”

Emma did not care.

“My mother still died.”

“Yes.”

Rinaldi looked toward the cassette recorder.

“And she knew she might.”

Caterina, who had arrived on a later flight, covered her mouth.

Rinaldi placed a tape in the machine.

Isabel’s voice filled the stone room.

Older than Emma remembered.

Tired.

But unmistakably hers.

“If Emma ever hears this, then I failed to keep the past away from her.”

Emma stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“Vittorio wanted to bring us home. I refused. Not because I stopped loving him. Because Vincent had people inside the Moretti house.”

Luca looked at Rinaldi.

“Who?”

The tape answered.

“I only know one name.”

Static.

Then:

“Gabriel Rinaldi.”

Emma turned.

Dante’s men moved instantly.

Rinaldi raised both hands.

“No.”

Luca’s face became cold.

“You just told us you protected her.”

“I did.”

“Then why did she name you?”

“Because she believed I betrayed her.”

“Did you?”

Rinaldi looked at Emma.

“For one night.”

The room went silent.

“What did you do?” Emma asked.

He swallowed.

“I told Vincent where the black case was being moved.”

Emma stared.

“And Marco followed her.”

Rinaldi’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

There it was.

Not murder by intention.

Betrayal by consequence.

Luca’s voice became almost quiet enough to disappear.

“Take him.”

Rinaldi did not resist as Dante’s men restrained him.

But before they moved him, he looked at Emma.

“Vincent did not come here for the case.”

Emma frowned.

“Then why?”

Rinaldi looked toward the deepest corridor of the archive.

“For Vittorio’s final will.”

Luca went still.

Rinaldi continued.

“If Emma is legally recognized under that will, every controlling share Vincent stole through the old trust returns to her.”

Emma stared at Luca.

“I told you I don’t want his money.”

Luca’s expression remained hard.

“This isn’t about whether you want it.”

A distant alarm began ringing somewhere beneath the archive.

Dante turned.

“Fire sensor.”

Rinaldi’s face emptied.

“Vincent.”

May you like

Smoke curled from the lower corridor.

And Emma understood exactly what he had gone to destroy.
