Chapter 10 - The Last Command

Titan did not attack.
That saved lives.
He ran straight toward Grace.
Dario swung the pistol toward the dog.
Luca moved first.
He slammed into Dario's arm as the shot fired into the ceiling.
The terminal erupted.
Federal agents entered from the rail corridor and the south service doors. Pike reached for his weapon, saw three rifles trained on him, and froze.
"Hands!" Naomi shouted. "Show me your hands!"
Marco rolled sideways to get clear.
Dario and Luca hit the concrete together.
The pistol skidded beneath a loading cart.
Grace dropped beside Titan and grabbed his collarless neck.
"Easy. Easy."
The mastiff shook with adrenaline but pressed against her exactly as he had in the courtyard.
Samuel's voice came through Grace's earpiece.
"Gracie, are you hit?"
"No."
"Luca?"
She looked.
Two agents had pulled Dario away. Luca stood, breathing hard, blood at the corner of his mouth.
"Still irritatingly alive."
"Good."
Naomi forced Dario's hands behind his back.
"Dario Moretti, you are under arrest for conspiracy, kidnapping, witness tampering, trafficking offenses, money laundering, attempted murder, and several charges we're going to enjoy adding after sunrise."
Dario looked past her at Grace.
He smiled.
That frightened Grace more than anger would have.
"Ask Samuel who started the fire."
Grace went still.
Samuel's voice disappeared from the earpiece.
Dario saw her reaction.
"There it is. He still hasn't told you everything."
Naomi pulled him toward the exit.
"Save it for counsel."
Dario twisted enough to call back.
"Ask him why Pike agreed to the death certificate. Ask him whose idea the watch was."
Then he was gone.
Grace stared at the doorway.
Luca approached.
"He's trying to fracture you."
"That doesn't mean he's lying."
"No."
Marco sat against a pillar while an agent cut his restraints.
Luca looked at him.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Finally Marco said, "I didn't know about the trafficking."
Luca's expression was unreadable.
"You moved money for Bellweather."
"I thought it was Dario's hidden investment fund."
"Dario was dead."
"That's what everyone thought. Then seven years ago he contacted me."
Grace watched Luca absorb the betrayal.
"And you said nothing."
Marco looked down.
"He told me Matteo had stolen family assets before he died. He showed me accounts. He said he wanted what was his, quietly."
"So you helped him steal from us."
"At first, yes."
Luca laughed without humor.
"At first."
"Then I realized the companies weren't just holding money. I tried to stop. He sent me photographs of my wife leaving our son's school."
Luca's anger changed shape.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
"Because the first thing he proved was that someone inside your security team reported to him. I didn't know who."
Victor, arriving with the second entry team, heard that.
"Owen Pike."
Marco nodded.
"Thomas Vale. He controlled contractor access. Dario said if I talked, my family died first."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"You could still have told me."
"I didn't know if it was you."
Silence.
Luca finally said, "You brought him into my house."
"I approved a contractor company. Owen inserted himself through it. By the time I discovered who he was, he had copies of my transfers."
Naomi returned.
"Marco, you're still under arrest. Cooperation matters, but it doesn't erase seven years of financial crimes."
Marco nodded.
"I know."
Luca looked away.
Grace understood then why Dario liked family leverage.
Love made perfect pressure points.
It also made betrayal harder to simplify.
Samuel entered the terminal despite the order to remain in the command vehicle.
Naomi saw him and closed her eyes.
"Of course."
Grace turned on her father.
"Who started the fire?"
Samuel stopped.
No one else moved.
"Grace—"
"Dario told me to ask. So I'm asking."
Samuel looked toward Pike, who sat handcuffed against the wall.
Pike smiled faintly.
"Tell her, Sam."
Samuel's face tightened.
"I started it."
Grace had expected the answer.
It still hurt.
"You burned your own car."
"Yes."
"The wallet?"
"Mine."
"The watch?"
"Mine."
"The jacket?"
"Mine."
"You built your own death scene."
Samuel nodded.
"Pike said Dario had people watching the roads. A disappearance wouldn't be enough. It had to look final."
Grace pointed toward Pike.
"And you trusted him to certify it?"
"I trusted a medical examiner Pike controlled. I did not know Pike himself was already taking money from Dario."
Pike laughed.
"You were always too sentimental, Sam. Thought one favor meant loyalty."
Samuel took a step toward him.
Naomi raised a hand.
"Don't."
Samuel stopped.
Grace continued.
"Was there a body?"
Samuel's eyes lowered.
"No."
"Then how did they claim there was?"
Naomi answered.
"According to records we pulled this afternoon, the remains were listed as too damaged for visual identification. Dental comparison was waived because Pike filed an emergency identification based on personal effects and a falsified forensic report."
Grace stared at Pike.
"You came to my house."
He looked at her.
"I did."
"You watched me cry."
Pike said nothing.
"You told me my father hadn't suffered."
Still nothing.
Grace stepped closer.
"Was any part of that true?"
Pike's face lost its smugness.
"No."
The word landed with extraordinary quiet.
Grace felt Samuel behind her.
She did not turn.
"Why help Dario after helping my father fake the fire?"
Pike shrugged.
"Money."
No grand philosophy.
No tragic excuse.
Money.
It made Grace hate him more.
Naomi led Pike away.
Samuel remained.
"I should have told you the fire was mine the minute I saw you today."
"Yes."
"I thought if I explained why—"
"You keep doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Deciding what truth I can handle."
Samuel looked as if she had struck him.
"You're right."
"Stop protecting me with lies."
"I will."
"No more missing pieces."
"No more."
Grace stared at him.
"Was Mom involved?"
Samuel's face softened.
"No. Your mother died before any of this began. I used her maiden name because Dario never knew it mattered to me."
"Did Aunt Rachel know?"
"No."
"Did Elena know you started the fire?"
"Only that it was staged, not who lit it."
"Did Matteo?"
"Yes."
"Luca?"
"No."
Grace looked at Luca.
He nodded once.
Another betrayal he had inherited rather than chosen.
Naomi returned again, this time holding Dario's phone in an evidence bag.
"We have enough already to keep everyone busy for months, but this may make the case much stronger."
"What?" Luca asked.
"Dario's device contains active authentication tokens for Bellweather accounts and messages with Pike and Owen. It also contains draft instructions for Marco."
Marco looked up.
"Instructions?"
"To kill you after the exchange."
Marco went pale.
Luca's anger went quiet.
Naomi continued.
"There is more. Coordinates. Multiple storage sites. Names matching Sofia's deposition."
Sofia's voice came through Naomi's secure tablet from the mobile unit.
"Can I see him?"
Naomi hesitated.
"Dario?"
"No. Marco."
Marco looked surprised.
Naomi turned the screen.
Sofia studied him.
"You moved Bellweather money."
"Yes."
"Did you ever see a payment memo marked A.M.?"
Marco frowned.
"Several. I thought it meant asset management."
Sofia's face changed.
"Adrian Marin. My father. Dario kept paying a dead man's account to move money because the identity had already passed compliance checks."
Naomi turned to an agent.
"Add that."
Sofia looked back at Marco.
"You can help prove continuity from the old network to the new one."
Marco swallowed.
"I will."
Luca looked at him.
"Tell them everything."
"I will."
"Even if it destroys the company."
Marco closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Luca nodded.
"Then maybe something survives worth keeping."
Grace knelt beside Titan.
She checked his paws, ears, ribs. No obvious injury. A small injection mark showed at his shoulder.
"They sedated him."
Samuel crouched beside her.
"He'll be all right."
Titan opened one eye and licked Grace's wrist.
She laughed through sudden tears.
"You caused a lot of trouble."
His tail struck the concrete once.
Luca sat on his heels across from her.
"Technically, he approached you."
Grace looked at him.
The courtyard came back.
The groceries.
The scar.
The first impossible moment.
"Technically," she said, "your estate orientation was terrible."
Luca smiled.
This time fully.
Outside, federal vehicles carried Dario, Pike, Owen, and Marco in four different directions.
For the first time in twelve years, Samuel Walker did not need to disappear before sunrise.
But Grace knew the story was not finished simply because the chase was.
Truth had consequences too.
And morning was going to bring all of them.
The arrests did not end the night. They only changed its shape.
By two in the morning, Saint Agnes had become a maze of evidence markers. Agents recovered ledgers from a false wall, three encrypted laptops, passports under different names, photographs of witnesses, and a locked metal cabinet containing veterinary sedatives used on Titan.
Grace stood outside with a paper cup of coffee she did not drink.
Sofia arrived under escort after Naomi decided the site was secure enough for identification work. Elena met her beside the mobile command unit. This time their embrace was not desperate. It was exhausted.
Sofia looked at Samuel. "Is it really finished?"
Naomi answered before he could. "The danger is reduced. The case is beginning. Those are different things."
Sofia nodded. "I can live with beginning."
Marco's outside counsel finally released the sealed packet after a judge reviewed it. Inside were copies of Bellweather transfers, photographs of Owen meeting Gerald Pike, and a letter Marco had written to Luca but never sent. He admitted hiding Dario's return and wrote that he had been trying to trace the shell accounts before confessing.
It did not make him innocent.
It did prove he had begun trying to get out.
Luca read the letter once and handed it to Naomi.
"Use it if it's evidence."
"It may help establish coercion," she said.
"Use the truth. Whatever it does."
Grace watched him say it. Six months earlier, she would not have understood why that sentence cost him so much. Now she did.
Samuel sat beside Titan on the curb.
Grace joined him.
"You all right?" he asked.
"No."
He nodded. "Me neither."
May you like
For once he did not try to repair the feeling, explain it, or protect her from it.
They simply sat there while Titan leaned against both of them.
