Chapter 3 - The Fourth Blood Type Was a Trap

Luca moved everyone to a private suite above the restaurant.

The boys stayed with Rosa in the adjoining room.

No guards inside.

Only Marco at the door.

Emma sat opposite Luca.

Belini remained near the window in her red gown.

Nobody trusted her enough to let her leave.

Marco placed the prenatal file on the table.

Emma recognized the clinic name immediately.

Boston Women’s Center.

She had been treated there after leaving New York.

“How did your father get this?”

Luca looked at Marco.

“Find out.”

Emma turned pages.

Ultrasounds.

Lab work.

Four fetal labels.

Then later pediatric blood records.

Three boys listed O positive.

Leo listed A positive.

Luca was O positive.

Emma was A positive.

Belini spoke first.

“So the caller was right.”

Emma looked at her.

“No.”

Belini frowned.

Emma’s anger steadied her.

“An O-positive father and an A-positive mother can have an A-positive child.”

Marco looked at Luca.

Belini’s face changed.

Luca understood immediately.

“The call wasn’t evidence.”

“No,” Emma said.

“It was meant to sound like evidence.”

Someone had counted on panic doing the rest.

Luca leaned back.

“My father knows that?”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“Maybe he hoped you didn’t.”

Marco returned with another result.

“The pediatric files were accessed repeatedly.”

“By whom?”

“A private medical concierge service in Sicily.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

His father’s doctors used that service.

Emma stared at him.

“He has been monitoring them.”

Luca did not defend Vittorio.

That mattered.

“How long?” Emma asked.

Marco checked.

“First access was five years and eight months ago.”

Emma closed her eyes.

The boys had been infants.

Vittorio had known almost from the beginning.

Luca stood.

“Get DNA kits.”

Emma looked at him sharply.

He stopped.

Not because he changed his mind.

Because he understood what the order sounded like.

“I’m not accusing you.”

“It feels exactly like that.”

“I need something no one can manipulate.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“So do I.”

That changed the meaning.

Belini crossed her arms.

“You’re going to do this here?”

Luca looked at her.

“You’re still here because I haven’t decided whether you helped my father destroy six years of my life.”

Her face tightened.

“I believed him.”

“So did Emma.”

Belini looked toward her.

Luca continued.

“The difference is Emma had an edited recording, money, security, my father, and you all telling her the same lie.”

Belini said nothing.

“And I had my father telling me she abandoned me.”

Emma looked at Luca.

For the first time that night, the anger between them shifted.

Not gone.

Redirected.

Marco arranged a private laboratory.

Cheek swabs.

No drama.

No children frightened.

Luca explained only that doctors sometimes checked family information.

The smallest boy asked:

“Does this mean you’re our uncle?”

Luca almost smiled.

“No.”

“What are you, then?”

Luca looked at Emma.

She looked away.

“We’re figuring that out.”

The samples left with two guards.

Then Marco’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“Your father’s plane just filed a flight plan.”

“From Palermo?”

“Yes.”

“To New York.”

Emma’s hands tightened.

Belini whispered:

“He knows you found the archive.”

Luca looked at her.

“How?”

Belini said nothing.

He stepped closer.

“How does my father know what happens inside my security system?”

Marco answered before she could.

“Because his old master credential was never revoked.”

Luca looked toward the boys’ room.

Then back at Marco.

“Revoke everything.”

“Done.”

“No.”

Luca’s voice became colder.

“Erase nothing.”

Marco understood.

“You want him to think he still has access.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at Luca.

“For what?”

May you like

His eyes settled on the security camera above the door.

“To see what he does when he thinks we still believe the lie.”
