Chapter 7 - The Two Million Dollars

Adrian read the wire transfer three times.

Two million dollars.

From Briarwood Development.

To his father’s company.

One month after Thomas Miller was threatened.

Luca looked sick.

Matteo said nothing.

Julian stared at the floor.

Ruth watched them realize that heroes are easiest to believe in when the paperwork stays buried.

Adrian finally spoke.

“We verify it.”

No excuses.

No denial.

Just that.

Within two hours, Matteo found the old company ledger.

The two million dollars had been received.

But it had not stayed.

Three days later, the exact amount had been transferred again.

To an environmental remediation trust.

The trust’s beneficiary?

Miller Creek Restoration Fund.

Ruth stared at the record.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Adrian kept reading.

The fund had paid for groundwater monitoring, private testing, legal retainers, and medical screening for families living downstream.

Anonymously.

Luca exhaled.

“Dad didn’t take the money.”

“No,” Adrian said.

“He redirected it.”

Matteo found a memorandum attached to the transfer.

Briarwood had paid Michael Vale to acquire Thomas’s evidence and keep the development alive.

Instead, Michael accepted the money, placed it beyond Briarwood’s reach, and used it to fund the cleanup case.

“He double-crossed them,” Julian said.

Ruth looked at the pocket watch.

“And never told anyone.”

Adrian’s mouth tightened.

“He probably thought secrecy protected us.”

Ruth gave him a tired smile.

“Men like our husbands and fathers seem to love that mistake.”

Adrian actually smiled.

Barely.

Then Claire called.

Grant had contacted her again.

He wanted to meet.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Tell him yes.”

Ruth immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Claire’s voice came through the speaker.

“I can do it.”

“No,” Ruth repeated.

“Ruth—”

“He used you once. He’ll use you again.”

Claire went quiet.

Then she said, “Let me fix one thing.”

Ruth closed her eyes.

She knew that feeling.

The desperate need to undo a betrayal with one brave act.

It rarely worked that cleanly.

But Adrian had another idea.

Claire would meet Grant.

In a public place.

With investigators nearby.

Wearing no hidden device because her phone already recorded calls and Grant might search her.

Ruth hated it.

She agreed anyway.

At five that evening, Claire sat across from Grant in a hotel lounge.

The investigators listened through a lawful recording setup arranged in advance.

Grant arrived late.

He looked angry.

“Where are the photographs?”

Claire kept her voice steady.

“I want more money.”

Grant stared at her.

“You already got enough.”

“No. You asked me to steal from my aunt.”

“You volunteered.”

“You asked me to help declare her incompetent.”

“You were going to become guardian.”

“I never agreed.”

Grant leaned forward.

“Listen carefully. Ruth Miller is ninety years old. She has no children. No one was supposed to care.”

In the surveillance room, Ruth closed her eyes.

Adrian looked at her.

She shook her head.

Keep listening.

Claire said, “Those men care.”

Grant laughed.

“They care about the land.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know men like Adrian Vale.”

Claire paused.

Then asked the question investigators wanted.

“Did you forge Ruth’s signature?”

Grant leaned back.

“No.”

Ruth’s heart sank.

Then he smiled.

“My attorney did.”

Every person in the surveillance room went still.

Grant continued.

“And before you get dramatic, he was told Ruth had agreed and forgotten. Old people forget.”

Claire’s hands tightened.

“What about the notary?”

“Paid.”

“What about the guardianship petition?”

“Insurance.”

“And Thomas Miller?”

Grant’s smile disappeared.

“That was my father’s mess.”

“You were on the tape.”

A long silence.

Grant’s face changed.

“What tape?”

Claire knew immediately she had said too much.

So did everyone else.

Grant stood.

“What tape?”

Claire reached for her phone.

Grant grabbed her wrist.

Investigators moved.

Adrian was faster.

He crossed the lounge in seconds.

Grant barely had time to turn before Adrian pulled Claire free.

No punch.

No dramatic fight.

Just controlled force.

Enough.

Police surrounded them.

Grant looked at Adrian.

“You think this ends because you found an old tape?”

Adrian’s voice was ice.

“No.”

Grant smiled.

“You haven’t found the part that matters.”

“What part?”

“The body.”

Ruth stopped breathing.

Claire stared at him.

Adrian’s face became unreadable.

Grant leaned closer as officers cuffed him.

“Ask your new mother what happened to Thomas Miller’s business partner.”

Ruth’s knees weakened.

Because Thomas had only ever had one business partner.

A man named Samuel Reed.

May you like

A man everyone believed had left town twenty years ago.

And Ruth had received a Christmas card from him every year since.
