Chapter 5 - The Chapel Safe

The family chapel stood at the edge of the Marchetti estate.

Small.

Stone.

Older than the main house.

Vincent entered with Isabella.

Leonard.

And me.

Dominic stayed under guard.

Not because Vincent trusted him.

Because he didn’t.

The chapel safe was hidden behind a memorial plaque.

Vincent inserted the silver key.

It opened.

Inside was one envelope.

One photograph.

And one cassette tape.

Vincent stared.

“That’s it?”

Isabella touched the envelope.

“Your father’s handwriting.”

Vincent opened it.

The document inside was legal.

Trust amendment.

Signed.

Notarized.

Witnessed.

Ownership of the controlling Marchetti family interests transferred to Isabella Marchetti.

Effective upon her identity confirmation.

Vincent looked at his mother.

“You own everything.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“The document says—”

“I don’t want it.”

Vincent stared.

“That’s not the same thing.”

Isabella looked at him.

“I came back for you.”

“Not for money.”

Vincent closed the document.

The photograph showed his father.

Dominic.

Carlo.

Samuel Pike.

All four standing outside the country house.

Smiling.

Friends once.

Vincent looked at the cassette.

Label:

FOR VINCENT — IF I FAIL.

His father’s voice filled the chapel.

“Son.”

Vincent froze.

The recording was nineteen years old.

“If you hear this, I probably did not get the chance to tell you myself.”

Vincent sat.

Isabella covered her mouth.

His father continued.

“Your uncle is guilty of many things.”

Dominic.

“But not the one everyone will eventually blame him for.”

Vincent looked up.

Leonard whispered:

“Your father knew.”

The recording continued.

“Dominic stole from the family.”

“He hid money.”

“He threatened people.”

“But he did not ask anyone to kill me.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

One lie removed.

Another waiting.

“Carlo DeLuca came to me pretending to help.”

“He wanted evidence against Dominic.”

“I gave him copies.”

“Then I learned Carlo was also moving money.”

Vincent looked at Isabella.

She nodded.

“Police.”

“Contracts.”

“Political favors.”

His father’s voice continued.

“Samuel Pike wrote the trust amendment.”

“I trusted him.”

“That was my mistake.”

“Samuel learned how much Isabella would control.”

“And how much could be transferred if she disappeared.”

Vincent frowned.

Leonard whispered:

“He wanted the assets.”

The recording confirmed it.

“Samuel does not want justice.”

“He wants ownership.”

“He believes if Isabella dies before confirming the trust, he can challenge the amendment and redirect assets through older agreements.”

Vincent looked at the document.

“So he needed her gone.”

Isabella whispered:

“Nineteen years ago.”

His father continued.

“If Isabella is still alive, protect her.”

“If Carlo is still alive, do not trust his fear.”

“Fear made him useful to Samuel.”

Then a pause.

“And if Sofia DeLuca is ever part of your life…”

Vincent stopped breathing.

Isabella looked at him.

The recording continued.

“Do not punish the daughter for the father.”

Silence.

Vincent stared at the old machine.

His father had named Sofia when she was a child.

How?

The recording explained.

“Carlo has a daughter close to your age.”

“I have seen what fear does to fathers.”

“Do not let it decide what kind of man you become.”

The tape ended.

Vincent sat in silence.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Samuel.

Vincent answered.

“Samuel Pike.”

A man laughed softly.

“Your father always said you were quick.”

“Where are Sofia and Carlo?”

“Alive.”

“For now.”

“What do you want?”

“The trust amendment.”

Vincent looked at Isabella.

“No.”

Samuel’s voice remained calm.

“Then bring your mother.”

“No.”

A pause.

“Interesting.”

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Carlo said you would choose Sofia.”

Vincent looked at the recording machine.

His father’s words.

Do not punish the daughter for the father.

Samuel continued.

“Maybe he was wrong.”

Then a second voice came through.

Sofia.

“Vincent.”

He stood.

“Sofia?”

“I’m okay.”

Then a sound.

A slap.

Vincent’s face changed.

Samuel returned.

“Country house.”

“Wine cellar.”

“Thirty minutes.”

“Bring Isabella and the document.”

The call ended.

Isabella reached for the trust amendment.

Vincent stopped her.

“No.”

“He has Sofia.”

“And Carlo.”

“Yes.”

“He wants you.”

“Yes.”

Isabella looked at her son.

“Nineteen years ago, your father sent me away to protect me.”

“I’m not letting you make the same decision for me.”

Vincent stared.

May you like

She continued.

“This time, I choose whether I go.”
