Chapter 5 - The Will Carlo Buried

George brought the will the next morning.
Not from the house.
From a bank vault.
The gala had ended.
Guests gone.
No signatures.
No engagement toast.
No restructuring.
Only family.
And police outside.
Luca sat in the library.
Matteo across from him.
Rosalie near the window.
James stood beside his daughter.
Carlo had been asked to remain.
He refused.
Police stopped him at the gate after Matteo filed a formal complaint.
Now he was in another room with lawyers.
George placed the will on the table.
Luca opened it.
His grandfather:
Vittorio Vescari.
Dated eighteen years ago.
Two years before Sofia disappeared.
The document named Matteo as controlling heir.
Then Luca.
Carlo received one property.
Nothing more.
Luca frowned.
"Why?"
Matteo answered:
"Your grandfather did not trust him."
"Apparently correctly."
George pointed to an amendment.
Dated fifteen years ago.
After Matteo disappeared.
The amendment transferred temporary control to Carlo.
Luca read the signature.
Vittorio Vescari.
Then looked at George.
"Grandfather died sixteen years ago."
George nodded.
Silence.
The amendment had been signed by a dead man.
Rosalie whispered:
"Forgery."
James closed his eyes.
Luca looked at him.
"Your signature is here too."
James nodded.
"As witness."
"You witnessed a dead man's signature."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Carlo threatened Rosalie."
Rosalie began crying.
Luca stared at James.
"How old was she?"
"Nineteen."
Luca frowned.
The timeline.
His father disappeared fifteen years ago.
Rosalie had known Luca already.
James continued:
"Carlo placed one of his companies in her name without telling her."
Luca looked at Rosalie.
She stared at her father.
"You never told me that."
"No."
"What company?"
James whispered the name.
Rosalie went pale.
Luca knew it too.
A logistics company investigated years later for weapons smuggling.
Charges dropped.
Evidence vanished.
Rosalie stepped backward.
"You put that in my name."
James shook his head.
"Carlo did."
"And you signed his will amendment to protect me."
"Yes."
She laughed through tears.
"Did it work?"
James had no answer.
George said:
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Carlo kept the company in her name for seven more years."
Rosalie stared at her father.
"You knew."
James closed his eyes.
"Yes."
"You kept cooperating."
"Yes."
Her face collapsed.
Luca watched.
For the first time, Rosalie's anger was not aimed at herself.
James continued:
"I kept trying to get her name removed."
"And?"
"Carlo always wanted one more signature."
Luca laughed softly.
"Of course."
Matteo looked at James.
"That is why you should have come to me."
James stared.
"You were missing."
"You knew where I was sometimes."
"Not safely."
Matteo stopped.
Fair.
Luca looked at the will.
"If this is valid, Carlo never legally controlled the companies."
George nodded.
"Correct."
"Then everything he signed afterward can be challenged."
"Yes."
Rosalie whispered:
"Including the trust transfers."
James nodded.
"And the board seats."
Luca looked at Matteo.
"You came back for this."
"Partly."
"What else?"
Matteo looked at his son.
"To give everything to you."
Luca almost laughed.
"No."
Matteo frowned.
"No?"
"No."
"You are the legal heir."
"I do not want a poisoned empire as an apology."
Silence.
Matteo stared.
Luca continued:
"We audit everything."
"Every company."
"Every account."
"Every property."
"If it is dirty, it goes."
James looked surprised.
Matteo did too.
Luca said:
"If the money belongs to victims, it goes back."
"Even if that leaves me with nothing."
Matteo whispered:
"You built part of this yourself."
"Then that part can survive an audit."
George smiled slightly.
Carlo's attorney entered.
"Mr. Vescari."
Luca looked up.
"Which one?"
The attorney hesitated.
Luca almost smiled.
"Exactly."
The lawyer addressed Luca.
"Your uncle would like to speak privately."
"No."
"He says he has information about Sofia."
Matteo stood.
"What information?"
The lawyer looked at him.
"He says Sofia was not in Switzerland the entire time."
Luca's face changed.
"Where else?"
The attorney handed him a sealed photograph.
Luca opened it.
Sofia.
Older.
Standing outside the Vescari estate.
Date stamped:
Nine years ago.
Luca stared.
"She came home."
Matteo went pale.
George whispered:
"No."
Luca looked at his father.
"You didn't know."
Matteo shook his head.
"No."
That was new.
One secret Matteo did not own.
Luca looked at the photograph again.
His mother had stood outside his home nine years ago.
And he had never seen her.
The attorney said:
"Carlo says she came to meet one person."
Luca's voice went cold.
"Who?"
May you like
The attorney looked toward James.
"Rosalie Crane."
