Chapter 2 - The Woman in Room 912

Hotel Bellrose was twelve minutes away.
Luca sat in the back seat.
Elias beside him.
I sat in front.
Nobody spoke.
Luca held the locket in his palm.
Closed.
Then opened.
Then closed again.
The old photograph of him was worn at the edges.
The new photograph of Sofia was not.
Four weeks old.
That mattered.
She had been alive four weeks ago.
Maybe tonight.
When we reached the ninth floor, Elias stopped outside Room 912.
Luca looked at him.
“She knows I’m coming?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“She asked me not to force you.”
Luca stared at the door.
“She disappeared for eighteen years.”
“Yes.”
“And now she is worried about forcing me?”
Elias lowered his eyes.
“She has spent eighteen years believing every choice she made hurt you.”
Luca knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
A woman’s voice came from inside.
“Elias?”
The jeweler looked at Luca.
Luca stopped breathing.
The door opened.
Sofia Moretti stood there.
Sixty.
Gray streaks in dark hair.
Thin.
Elegant.
Same dark eyes as Luca.
She looked at him.
He looked at her.
The hallway became silent.
Then Sofia whispered:
“You grew a beard.”
Luca’s face changed.
“You noticed that first?”
Her eyes filled.
“No.”
She looked at his hands.
Then the tattoo.
Then his face.
“I noticed everything.”
Luca did not move.
Sofia stepped aside.
“Come in.”
He stayed in the hallway.
“Why did you leave me?”
No greeting.
No hug.
No forgiveness.
Just that.
Sofia closed her eyes.
“Because your father told me he would take you somewhere I could never find you.”
“He already had me.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed leaving fixed that?”
“No.”
Her voice broke.
“I believed staying would get you killed.”
Luca stared.
Elias entered quietly.
I stayed near the door.
Sofia looked at the locket.
“You opened it.”
“Yes.”
“You saw the note.”
“Yes.”
“And Celeste did not give it to you.”
“No.”
Sofia looked down.
“I hoped she would.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“You trusted her?”
“For a while.”
“Why?”
“Because she came to me.”
Luca went still.
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
“Before we got engaged.”
“Yes.”
“What did she want?”
Sofia walked toward the table.
There were three folders.
One old photograph.
And a small black key.
“She wanted to know whether her father had betrayed me.”
Luca looked at Sofia.
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
“Once?”
Sofia shook her head.
“Three times.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Arthur said he told my father where you were.”
“He did.”
“What else?”
“He helped your father move money after I disappeared.”
Luca looked toward Elias.
The jeweler nodded.
Sofia continued.
“And years later, Arthur became the legal owner of companies your father could no longer hold openly.”
“Shell companies.”
“Yes.”
“Owned by the Vane family.”
“Yes.”
Luca laughed once.
“So Celeste’s family became rich from my father’s money.”
Sofia looked sad.
“Some of it.”
“How much?”
She slid one folder toward him.
Luca opened it.
Property deeds.
Port contracts.
Investment accounts.
All connected to Arthur Vane.
Luca read one amount.
Then another.
His face hardened.
“Three hundred million.”
“That was twelve years ago.”
“What is it worth now?”
Sofia answered quietly.
“Closer to nine hundred.”
Silence.
Luca stared at the papers.
“And Celeste knew?”
“Not when she first met you.”
“When did she learn?”
“Eight months ago.”
“The same month she found you.”
“Yes.”
Luca closed the folder.
“That was before she accepted my proposal.”
“Yes.”
His face went still.
Sofia continued.
“She told me she loved you.”
Luca looked at her.
“And you believed her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she was terrified.”
He frowned.
“Of me?”
“No.”
“Of Arthur?”
Sofia shook her head.
“Of what would happen if you learned your father built part of your empire with money that legally belongs to the Vane family.”
Luca stared.
“That does not make sense.”
Sofia opened the second folder.
“Because Arthur did not steal everything.”
She placed one contract in front of him.
His father’s signature.
Dante Moretti.
Arthur Vane.
Luca read the date.
Sixteen years ago.
“What is this?”
“A partnership agreement.”
“Between my father and Arthur?”
“Yes.”
“Then Arthur did not just help him.”
“No.”
“He became his partner.”
“Yes.”
Luca’s voice dropped.
“Why did Celeste hide this?”
Sofia looked at him.
“Because if this contract is valid, half of Moretti Maritime may belong to Arthur.”
Luca stopped moving.
“No.”
Sofia nodded.
“And if it is invalid?”
“Then Arthur could face charges for fraud, tax crimes, and money laundering.”
Luca looked at the locket again.
“So Celeste thought marrying me might solve this.”
Sofia answered carefully.
“I do not know what Celeste thought.”
“You met her.”
“Yes.”
“She asked about the contract?”
“Yes.”
“She asked about the locket?”
“Yes.”
“She knew it contained evidence?”
Sofia hesitated.
Luca noticed.
“What evidence?”
Sofia reached for the locket.
He did not give it to her.
She looked at him.
“There is another compartment.”
Luca stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Elias looked surprised.
Sofia took the black key from the table.
“It opens the back plate.”
Luca handed her the locket.
She inserted the key into a tiny slot beneath the hinge.
A second panel opened.
Inside was a folded strip of paper.
Luca unfolded it.
One name.
One date.
One bank.
And one account number.
He stared.
“What is this?”
Sofia answered:
“The first account your father opened with Arthur.”
Luca looked at her.
“Why hide it in jewelry?”
“Because your father searched everything else.”
“Why not destroy it?”
“Because I needed proof.”
“For what?”
She looked directly at him.
“For the day you were old enough to learn your father did not merely threaten me.”
Luca’s face changed.
“What did he do?”
Sofia’s hands began shaking.
“He had someone follow me.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She swallowed.
“After I escaped the second time, he found me again.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“What happened?”
Sofia looked toward Elias.
The jeweler looked away.
Luca’s voice became colder.
“What happened?”
Sofia whispered:
“He took my passport.”
Silence.
“My money.”
Another pause.
“And for eleven months, he kept me in a house outside Naples.”
Luca stared.
“He imprisoned you.”
“Yes.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Luca stepped backward.
Elias reached toward him.
He pulled away.
“Did Arthur know?”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“And Celeste?”
“No.”
Luca breathed slowly.
Then asked:
“Why did Arthur help him?”
Sofia looked at the papers.
“Because your father promised him something.”
“What?”
She slid the third folder across the table.
On the front:
LUCA MORETTI.
Luca opened it.
Inside was a trust agreement.
His own name.
Arthur Vane’s name.
And one more.
Celeste Vane.
Luca stared.
“What is this?”
May you like
Sofia answered:
“The reason your father wanted you to marry a Vane long before you ever met Celeste.”
