Chapter 5 - THE WEDDING WAS NEVER JUST A WEDDING

Sofia sat on the wooden chair.

Her face was colorless.

“My mother is alive?”

Marco did not soften the answer.

“She was when I last saw her.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

Sofia stood so quickly the chair moved backward.

“Where?”

“I don’t know now.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

Marco’s voice stayed calm.

“I expect you to decide whether you want the truth even when it hurts your father.”

Sofia stared at him.

Then at Enzo.

“He told me she died from complications after surgery.”

Marco nodded.

“That story was easier.”

“For who?”

“For Vittorio.”

Sofia looked away.

Enzo picked up the cassette recorder.

“Why was her mother there?”

Marco answered:

“Elena kept the accounting books at Valenti Shipping.”

Aldo closed his eyes.

“I knew it.”

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped closer to the table.

“When I worked there, I never saw Vittorio prepare the false manifests himself.”

“Because he didn’t,” Marco said.

“Elena did?”

“At first.”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

Marco looked at her.

“She helped him hide money through shipping contracts.”

Sofia’s voice became hard.

“My mother was not a criminal.”

Marco did not argue.

“She also became the first person who tried to stop him.”

That quieted her.

Marco tapped the empty ledger cover.

“Elena copied the real accounts. Isabella found the copies. I found out later.”

Enzo looked at his mother.

“You two knew each other?”

Isabella nodded.

“Elena came to me because she was afraid.”

Sofia whispered:

“Of my father?”

“Yes.”

“She wanted to leave him?”

“Yes.”

“Did she?”

Isabella’s eyes filled.

“She tried.”

Sofia turned away.

Enzo looked at Marco.

“And the wedding?”

Marco’s face hardened.

“Vittorio needed legal access to the dormant trust.”

“We know.”

“No.”

Marco shook his head.

“You know about St. Gabriel.”

He looked at Sofia.

“You do not know about Pier Nine.”

Aldo’s head snapped up.

“Pier Nine was demolished.”

“Above ground.”

Enzo frowned.

“What is Pier Nine?”

Marco opened a folded map.

A section of Chicago waterfront.

An old Valenti terminal.

A red mark beneath a warehouse that no longer existed.

“Your grandfather and Vittorio’s father built a private records room under the customs office.”

Aldo stared.

“I heard stories.”

“They were true.”

Enzo looked at the map.

“What is inside it?”

Marco answered:

“The originals that prove who owned the accounts.”

Sofia whispered:

“My father wants them.”

“He has wanted them for twenty-four years.”

“Then why wait for our wedding?”

Marco looked at Enzo.

“Because the land under Pier Nine belongs to the same dormant Marchetti trust.”

Enzo understood.

“After I marry, I control it.”

“Yes.”

“And Sofia becomes emergency co-signer.”

“Yes.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Enzo looked at her.

“You said you didn’t know what he wanted.”

“I didn’t know about Pier Nine.”

“Did you know the marriage agreement gave you access?”

“Yes.”

“Did your father ask you to get it?”

She hesitated.

That was enough.

Enzo stepped away.

Sofia followed.

“Enzo.”

“No.”

“I never planned to use it.”

“But you let him write it into our marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he said the trust contained evidence that would destroy both families.”

Marco gave a bitter laugh.

“It might.”

Sofia looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Marco reached into the metal box.

He removed one transfer authorization.

It carried two signatures.

Vittorio Valenti.

And Marco Marchetti.

Enzo stared at his father’s name.

“You signed.”

Marco did not deny it.

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Seven.”

Isabella looked down.

Aldo said nothing.

Enzo’s voice became low.

“You told me Vittorio threatened you.”

“He did.”

“Before or after you helped him?”

Marco swallowed.

“After.”

That answer changed the room.

Enzo looked at his father differently.

“You were part of it.”

“For two years.”

“What were you moving?”

Marco answered carefully.

“Money hidden inside legitimate shipping contracts.”

Enzo’s jaw tightened.

“Whose money?”

“People neither of us should have been doing business with.”

“Were you paid?”

“Yes.”

“Did you stop because it was wrong?”

Marco took a long breath.

“At first, I stopped because I was afraid.”

Enzo nodded slowly.

“At least that is true.”

Marco accepted it.

“Later I understood what it was doing to our family.”

Isabella stepped beside him.

“He tried to help Elena and me expose it.”

Enzo looked at her.

“After he made money from it.”

“Yes.”

The word was painful.

But Isabella did not hide from it.

Sofia stared at Marco’s signature.

Then whispered:

“My father told me he was protecting Enzo from his own father.”

Marco looked at her.

“That is how Vittorio survives.”

“How?”

“He takes one true thing and wraps ten lies around it.”

Sofia began to cry again.

Enzo did not move toward her.

Aldo asked:

“If the originals are under Pier Nine, why did you bring us here?”

Marco looked at Isabella.

“Because she hid the key.”

Isabella reached beneath the collar of her cardigan.

A thin chain.

A small brass key.

Enzo stared.

She removed it.

On one side were stamped two characters.

P9.

Sofia looked at it.

Then toward the door.

“My father knows we’re here.”

Everyone became still.

Enzo asked:

“How?”

She held up her phone.

No signal.

But a notification remained on the screen.

A location-sharing request.

Accepted.

Hours earlier.

Sofia’s face collapsed.

“I didn’t accept this.”

Marco took the phone.

His expression darkened.

“He did.”

Enzo looked at her.

“Your father has access to your phone?”

“He pays for the account.”

Aldo moved toward the window.

Headlights appeared beyond the trees.

Not one car.

Three.

Marco turned off the lamp.

The boathouse went dark.

Sofia whispered:

“That’s him.”

Enzo looked at the brass key in his mother’s hand.

Then at the empty ledger cover.

“Can he get into Pier Nine without me?”

Marco answered:

“No.”

“Then he came for the same reason he sent Sofia to the altar.”

Aldo looked at him.

May you like

Enzo closed his hand around the key.

“He came for my signature.”
