Chapter 8 - The Night the Old Families Came Back

Marco ran first.
His guards followed.
I stayed with Anna and Father Ellis for three seconds.
Then Anna moved.
“I’m not hiding again.”
She followed them.
So did I.
The chapel doors were open.
One stained-glass panel had been broken.
A man stood near the altar.
Black suit.
Gray tie.
Scar beside his right ear.
Anton.
He held the empty cedar box.
Marco stopped at the doorway.
“You are looking for the tape.”
Anton glanced at his empty hand.
Then at Marco.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
Anton smiled faintly.
“You don’t know who you are protecting.”
Marco stepped inside.
“I know exactly who I’m protecting.”
Anna entered behind him.
Anton’s eyes shifted to her.
“Anna Moretti.”
She said nothing.
Marco’s guards spread out.
Anton raised his hands.
“I’m unarmed.”
Marco looked at the broken glass.
“You cut the communications.”
“Yes.”
“You sent the threat.”
“Yes.”
Dominic entered the chapel last.
Anton looked at him.
And laughed.
“There he is.”
Dominic stopped.
Marco looked between them.
“You work for him.”
Anton shook his head.
“I did.”
“Who do you work for now?”
Anton looked at Victor.
Victor froze.
Alessandra whispered:
“No.”
Anton said:
“Not Victor.”
Then he looked at Alessandra.
“For the Vane trust.”
Victor’s face tightened.
“My father’s trust was dissolved fifteen years ago.”
Anton smiled.
“On paper.”
Thomas Bell entered behind Father Ellis.
He stared at Anton.
“I know you.”
Anton turned.
Thomas continued.
“You were a boy at the warehouse.”
Anton’s smile disappeared.
Marco looked at Thomas.
“What?”
“His father was one of Silas Vane’s men.”
Victor whispered:
“Rafael Valez.”
Anton’s eyes hardened.
Marco understood.
“Your father was there when mine was attacked.”
“Yes.”
“And now you want the tape destroyed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it names everyone.”
Marco held the cassette in his hand.
“Then we should listen.”
Anton shook his head.
“You think this ends with Dominic and Victor?”
“No.”
“It reaches judges. police captains. bankers. companies you still own.”
Marco’s expression did not change.
“Good.”
Anton stared.
Marco repeated:
“Good.”
Dominic whispered:
“Marco, be careful.”
Marco turned on him.
“You taught me careful for twenty-four years.”
Dominic said nothing.
Marco looked back at Anton.
“You broke into my house. Threatened my mother. Shut down my security.”
Anton nodded.
“And you think I’m going to protect the names on that tape?”
“I think you’ll protect your empire.”
Marco looked around the chapel.
At Anna.
At Father Ellis.
At Alessandra.
At Victor.
At Dominic.
Then at me.
Finally he said:
“My empire cost me my parents.”
Silence.
“I’m done paying for it.”
Anton’s expression changed.
Marco held the cassette out to one of his guards.
“Make three copies.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“Marco.”
“Send one to my attorney.”
“Marco.”
“One to federal investigators.”
Victor closed his eyes.
“And one to a journalist outside the state.”
Anton stared.
“You’ll destroy your own company.”
“Then I’ll build another.”
Anna looked at her son for a long moment.
Not with fear.
With something else.
Relief.
The guards took Anton into custody.
No one stopped them.
The estate communications came back fifteen minutes later.
Marco made three calls.
One to his attorney.
One to law enforcement.
One to the chairman of his board.
Then he returned to the study.
Alessandra waited alone beside the ring table.
The diamond still sat there.
Marco looked at it.
She removed her engagement ring from her finger.
“I know what you’re going to say.”
Marco remained silent.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I should have chosen you before my family.”
“Yes.”
“I loved you.”
Marco looked at her.
“I believe you.”
That made her cry harder.
“But?”
He looked toward Anna.
“But love that requires someone else to stay buried is not love I can live inside.”
Alessandra nodded.
She placed the ring beside the other one.
Then Anna walked into the room carrying the cassette player Father Ellis had found in the chapel cabinet.
She set it on the desk.
Marco sat down.
Father Ellis inserted the tape.
A click.
Static.
Then Luca Santoro’s voice filled the room.
“Marco, if you are hearing this, then my brother failed to erase the truth.”
May you like
Dominic closed his eyes.
And Luca began naming names.
