Chapter 9 - The House Salvatore Chose Instead of an Empire

Milwaukee.

11:43 p.m.

Small brick house.

No gates.

No guards.

Luca stood on the porch.

Carlo beside him.

Dominic behind.

He knocked once.

The door opened.

Salvatore Moretti stood there.

Seventy-two.

White hair.

Thin.

Alive.

Luca stared.

Salvatore stared back.

Then:

"You're late."

Luca almost laughed.

"Twelve years?"

"Feels longer."

Salvatore nodded.

"Fair."

Luca stepped inside.

No hug.

Not yet.

The house was simple.

One couch.

One table.

No evidence of wealth.

Carlo entered.

Salvatore looked at him.

His expression changed.

"Carlo."

Carlo lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

Salvatore nodded.

"Good start."

Luca turned.

"You knew about midnight."

"Yes."

"Why wait?"

"Because I wanted you to choose before meeting me."

Luca stared.

"Another test."

Salvatore closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Luca laughed bitterly.

"You people cannot help yourselves."

"No."

Salvatore looked ashamed.

"We learned power before honesty."

Luca asked:

"Did you want me to claim the shares?"

"At first."

"And now?"

"No."

Luca frowned.

Salvatore continued:

"I want the agreement destroyed."

"Why?"

"Because the shares should never have been trapped inside family leverage."

Luca stared.

"Then why not destroy it yourself?"

"Because legally, you had to decide."

"Or Vanessa."

"Yes."

Luca checked the time.

11:49.

He called Vanessa.

She answered.

"Luca."

"Ready?"

"Yes."

Richard's lawyer had prepared the transfer.

Vanessa signed electronically.

Carlo signed his eighteen percent.

Luca frowned.

"You too?"

Carlo nodded.

"I don't want it."

"Where does it go?"

Vanessa answered:

"Back to Moretti Holdings."

Luca said:

"No."

Everyone froze.

He looked at Salvatore.

Then Carlo.

Then the phone.

"No family company gets it."

Richard's voice came through speaker.

"Luca, there are tax consequences."

"I don't care."

"Where then?"

Luca looked at Salvatore.

His father smiled slightly.

He understood.

Luca answered:

"Employee trust."

Silence.

"The people who actually kept the company alive."

Salvatore nodded.

Carlo stared.

Vanessa whispered:

"All forty-six percent?"

"All."

Richard sounded shocked.

"You'll lose control."

Luca looked around the small house.

"No."

He smiled without humor.

"I'll lose ownership."

"Not the same thing."

11:56.

Documents were revised.

11:58.

Vanessa signed.

Carlo signed.

Luca signed.

11:59.

The transfer completed.

The old agreement expired one minute later.

No one inherited the poisoned shares.

Salvatore sat down.

Tears in his eyes.

"You did what I should have done."

Luca looked at him.

"No."

"I did what I decided."

That distinction mattered.

Then Luca finally asked:

"Why didn't you come home after Marco disappeared?"

Salvatore looked down.

"Shame."

"That simple?"

"Yes."

"You watched me build everything alone."

"Yes."

"You let Mom die believing you were dead."

Salvatore's face broke.

"Yes."

Luca's voice softened.

"That may be the part I never forgive."

Salvatore nodded.

"You shouldn't promise to."

Carlo looked between them.

Then whispered:

"What happens now?"

Luca looked at him.

"You answer for Olivia."

Carlo nodded.

"And everything else."

"Yes."

"No special treatment because we're family."

"Good."

Salvatore looked at Luca.

"And me?"

Luca stared at his father.

"Breakfast."

Salvatore blinked.

"What?"

"Tomorrow."

A pause.

"If you are still here."

May you like

His eyes filled.

"I will be."
