Chapter 3 - The Archive Box Charles Never Wanted Opened

They returned to the estate after midnight.

The gala was over.

Most guests had gone.

Bianca was still there.

So was Charles.

Damian walked into the ballroom with Victor beside him.

Bianca stopped breathing.

Charles did not.

He looked at Victor.

Then at the passport in Damian’s hand.

“You should not have come here.”

Victor smiled without warmth.

“I heard that fourteen years ago.”

Damian looked at Charles.

“Eleven years.”

Charles closed his eyes.

Bianca whispered:

“What?”

Damian faced her.

“Your father intercepted my father’s letters for eleven years.”

She turned.

“Dad?”

Charles said nothing.

That was enough.

Bianca stared at him.

“You told me Julian did it.”

“He did.”

“For three years.”

Charles looked at Victor.

Victor nodded.

Bianca’s face changed.

“And after that?”

Charles whispered:

“I did.”

She stepped backward.

“No.”

Damian took out the brass key.

“Where is the diplomatic archive?”

Charles looked at it.

His face went pale.

“Damian.”

“Where?”

“The foundation offices.”

“Which room?”

Charles did not answer.

Victor did.

“Basement.”

Damian looked at Theodore.

The old archivist nodded.

“I can open the catalog system.”

Charles stepped forward.

“You have no idea what is in that box.”

Damian looked at him.

“That sentence is why I’m opening it.”

They drove to the Laurent Foundation.

Bianca came.

Charles came too.

Nobody invited him.

Nobody stopped him.

The basement smelled like paper and dust.

Theodore entered an old archive code.

A steel cabinet unlocked.

Inside were numbered diplomatic storage boxes.

Victor found one.

L-417.

The brass key fit.

Damian opened it.

Inside were letters.

Sealed envelopes.

Bank cables.

Photographs.

And one tape recorder.

Victor looked at Charles.

“You kept everything.”

Charles answered:

“I kept evidence.”

“To protect yourself.”

“Yes.”

At least he did not deny it.

Damian picked up a bank cable.

Transfer:

$12,000,000.

From a Vale shell company.

To a humanitarian fund.

Then out again.

Different account.

Different country.

Charles’s authorization stamp.

Damian looked at him.

“You approved this.”

“Yes.”

“Knowing what it was?”

Charles hesitated.

“At first, no.”

Victor laughed quietly.

“There it is.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“At first.”

Charles looked tired.

“The first transfers were presented as emergency funds.”

“When did you know?”

“Six months later.”

“And you continued.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Four years.”

Bianca covered her mouth.

Damian looked at her.

She looked like she had never seen her father before.

Charles continued.

“Julian threatened to expose me.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

Charles turned.

“He did.”

“After you were already involved.”

Silence.

Damian understood.

“At first, you chose the money.”

Charles looked down.

“Yes.”

“Later, you stayed because of blackmail.”

“Yes.”

Damian picked up another envelope.

His name.

DAMIAN VALE.

He opened it.

A letter from Victor.

Ten years old.

Damian read the first line.

SON, I AM ALIVE.

He stopped.

Bianca started crying.

Damian looked at Charles.

“You held this.”

“Yes.”

“Did you read it?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know I thought he was dead?”

“Yes.”

Damian’s hand tightened.

“Why?”

Charles looked at Bianca.

She stared back.

“Don’t.”

Her voice broke.

“Do not use me.”

Charles looked away.

Damian noticed.

“What does Bianca have to do with this?”

Charles answered slowly.

“Julian threatened her.”

Bianca frowned.

“When?”

“You were nineteen.”

She stared.

“You never told me.”

“No.”

“What did he threaten?”

“To pull you into the accounts.”

Damian looked at Victor.

Victor’s face hardened.

Charles continued.

“Julian had already used Damian’s name.”

“So you thought he would use hers.”

“Yes.”

Bianca whispered:

“And you kept Victor hidden because Julian threatened me?”

“At first.”

Theodore shook his head.

Charles closed his eyes.

Damian almost smiled.

The word had become a confession by itself.

“What changed?”

Charles pointed at the box.

“This.”

Damian looked down.

Charles continued.

“Victor’s evidence did not only implicate Julian.”

“It implicated you.”

“Yes.”

“So after Julian stopped watching me, you kept the lie alive.”

“Yes.”

“For yourself.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Damian placed the letter back on the table.

Then saw one envelope without his name.

VICTOR VALE.

FROM ELENA.

Damian froze.

His mother.

He opened it.

Victor reached forward.

Then stopped.

Damian read.

VICTOR,

I FOUND THE LETTERS CHARLES HID.

I WILL NOT TELL DAMIAN YET.

NOT UNTIL I KNOW WHETHER YOU ARE COMING HOME AS HIS FATHER OR AS A WITNESS LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT.

Damian looked at Victor.

His father’s face changed.

He continued reading.

YOU LEFT HIM ONCE.

DO NOT MAKE ME HELP YOU LEAVE HIM AGAIN.

Damian lowered the letter.

“My mother did not simply know you were alive.”

“No.”

“She did not trust you.”

Victor whispered:

“No.”

“Why?”

Victor looked at Charles.

Then at the tape recorder.

Charles went pale.

Damian noticed.

“What is on that?”

Nobody answered.

Theodore picked up a cassette.

Label:

VICTOR / JULIAN / PARIS.

Fourteen years ago.

Damian inserted it.

Static.

Then Julian’s voice.

“If you testify, Damian goes down with us.”

Victor’s voice followed.

“He knew nothing.”

“He doesn’t have to know. His name is on the companies.”

A pause.

Then Victor said:

“What do you want?”

Julian answered:

“Disappear.”

Another pause.

“And I clean Damian out of the records.”

Damian stopped the tape.

He looked at his father.

“You made a deal with Julian.”

Victor did not deny it.

“To save me.”

“Yes.”

Damian stared.

“And in exchange?”

Victor whispered:

“I agreed not to testify.”

Silence.

Theodore looked shocked.

Damian’s voice went cold.

“But you entered protection because you agreed to testify.”

Victor looked at him.

“I changed my mind after I was already inside.”

Damian understood.

“You became a protected witness.”

“Yes.”

“Then refused to testify.”

“Yes.”

“And stayed hidden anyway.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Damian stared at him.

“So my father did not disappear because he was brave.”

Victor’s voice broke.

“No.”

“He disappeared because he was afraid.”

“Yes.”

Damian looked at the box.

Then at Charles.

Then Bianca.

Every person in the room had used fear as an excuse.

Theodore opened another folder.

Inside was one recent document.

Damian frowned.

“What is that?”

Theodore read the date.

“Six days ago.”

Victor’s face changed.

Charles looked toward the door.

Damian took the page.

A transfer authorization.

Forty-eight million dollars.

The same amount once moved under Damian’s forged name.

Destination:

VALE RELIEF INTERNATIONAL.

Authorized by:

JULIAN VALE.

Damian looked up.

“My uncle is still moving the money.”

Victor whispered:

“Yes.”

“And tonight’s charity gala?”

Bianca went pale.

Charles closed his eyes.

May you like

Damian understood.

“The gala was cover.”
