Chapter 6 - The Uncle Who Stayed

Victor Vale arrived at the estate before Adrian invited him.

That was his first mistake.

His second was bringing no lawyer.

He walked into the library smiling.

Sixty-two.

Silver hair.

Navy suit.

The same man whose photograph stood beside Adrian’s graduation picture.

He saw Dominic.

The smile vanished.

“Brother.”

Dominic looked at him for a long time.

“Victor.”

Adrian stayed behind the desk.

“Sit.”

Victor looked at him.

“You believe Serrano?”

“I believe documents.”

“Documents can be made.”

“So can funerals.”

Victor’s eyes sharpened.

Adrian pushed a copy of the ledger across the desk.

Victor did not touch it.

Rafael had already left.

But he had left us something else.

An old company invoice.

A payment from Vale Security Services to a consulting firm Gabriel controlled.

Dated three days before Dominic disappeared.

Victor stared at it.

“Routine security.”

Henry said, “For a company that didn’t exist until that week?”

Victor looked at him.

“You always were dramatic.”

Dominic spoke.

“I remember your voice.”

Victor froze.

Nobody moved.

Dominic’s breathing changed.

“At the harbor.”

Victor laughed.

“You were unconscious.”

“After.”

Dominic touched his scar.

“I heard Gabriel arguing with someone.”

Adrian stepped around the desk.

“What did he say?”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“He said, ‘Victor, this wasn’t the plan.’”

Victor stood.

“This is nonsense.”

Adrian blocked the door.

“No.”

His voice stayed low.

“You stayed.”

Victor looked at him.

“What?”

“My father disappeared. You stayed.”

Adrian’s eyes filled but his voice did not change.

“You taught me how to sign payroll. You came to my school. You sat beside my mother at chemotherapy.”

Victor looked away.

“You were family.”

“That’s why nobody looked at you.”

Silence.

Victor’s face hardened.

“You think I wanted him dead?”

Dominic answered.

“You wanted control.”

Victor turned.

“You were going to sell the shipping division.”

“It was losing money.”

“It was the only division I built.”

“There it is,” Henry said.

Victor looked at him.

“Shut up.”

Adrian flinched.

Not at the insult.

At the voice.

Because it sounded like the man Dominic remembered.

Victor saw that too.

He changed tactics.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You were seventeen. Your father was dismantling everything our family built.”

“He was my father.”

“And I raised you after he disappeared.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“That does not buy you the right to erase him.”

Victor looked at Dominic.

“I told Gabriel to scare you.”

Dominic went still.

There it was.

The first admission.

Victor continued quickly.

“He panicked. The car went over the embankment. I thought you were dead.”

“And when you learned I wasn’t?”

Victor said nothing.

Adrian whispered, “Mom found him.”

Victor’s eyes changed.

Henry noticed.

“So you sent the threat.”

Victor looked toward the door.

Adrian did not move.

“My mother died believing she had to keep him hidden from me.”

Victor’s voice softened.

“I was protecting the company.”

Adrian stared.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You were protecting the life you stole.”

Victor sat down again.

Suddenly old.

Dominic looked at his brother.

“Did you ever intend to tell him?”

Victor’s eyes filled.

It surprised all of us.

“No.”

That was the most honest thing he said.

Henry gathered the invoice and ledger.

Adrian picked up the phone.

Victor looked at him.

“You call them, and this family becomes a public scandal.”

Adrian paused.

Victor leaned forward.

“Share price. Contracts. Employees. Everything.”

For one second, I understood why secrets survived wealthy families.

They became infrastructure.

Adrian looked at the photographs on the mantel.

His mother.

His father.

Victor.

Then he dialed.

“My name is Adrian Vale.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“I need to report evidence connected to an old attempted homicide and financial fraud.”

When he finished, Dominic looked at his son.

Proud.

Sad.

Adrian did not look back.

He stared at the empty place where Camille’s engagement ring had been.

Because one truth was solved.

May you like

The other was waiting.

Did Camille know Victor’s name before that night?
