Chapter 8 - The Wedding That Never Happened

David explained everything before sunrise.
Lorenzo’s father had followed Arthur for months.
He knew Arthur suspected Michael.
He knew the contract had been canceled.
He also knew Arthur would act without David.
So he planted a camera at the garage.
Lorenzo stared at him.
“Then why didn’t he stop it?”
David’s answer was quiet.
“He tried.”
Maria looked up.
“What do you mean?”
“The footage continues.”
Lorenzo played the next file.
Arthur left.
The mechanic stayed.
Then Lorenzo’s father entered the garage.
He waited until the mechanic walked away.
He crawled beneath Michael’s car.
Twenty seconds later he stood.
He held a cut brake line in his hand.
Maria whispered:
“He found it.”
The video continued.
Lorenzo’s father replaced the line.
Checked it twice.
Then left a note beneath the windshield.
Maria was crying now.
“So the brakes were repaired.”
David nodded.
Lorenzo frowned.
“Then what caused the crash?”
David opened another folder.
Toxicology.
Maria stared.
“What is that?”
“Michael was drugged.”
Lorenzo’s face changed.
David continued.
“Something was added to his coffee after he left the garage.”
“By whom?”
“We never proved it.”
Vanessa looked at the blackmail archive.
“Arthur?”
David nodded.
“Most likely.”
Lorenzo turned to Maria.
“You believed my father let Michael die.”
Maria wiped her face.
“I did.”
“Did you ever ask him?”
“He died before I found the footage.”
Lorenzo looked at the screen.
His father had been guilty.
But not of that.
Not of abandoning Michael to Arthur.
Not at the end.
For the first time, Lorenzo’s anger had nowhere simple to go.
That morning, he returned to the mansion.
The engagement decorations were still up.
Sunlight made them look ridiculous.
Vanessa stood in the ballroom wearing the same red gown.
She had not changed.
Neither had Lorenzo.
He stopped beneath the flowers where they had planned to announce their wedding date.
Guests were gone.
Musicians were gone.
Photographers were gone.
Only family remained.
Maria.
Nico.
Antonio.
David.
Vanessa.
And me.
Lorenzo looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know your father canceled the contract?”
“No.”
“Did you know he helped Michael?”
“No.”
“Did you know your grandfather killed him?”
“I suspected after I found the surveillance file.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because every answer I found made another person guilty.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“No.”
“You hid my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You hid the letters.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Michael died at twelve.”
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“I am sorry.”
Lorenzo looked at the ring on the hidden desk.
Antonio had brought it back.
He picked it up.
Vanessa watched.
For one second, I thought he would return it to her hand.
He did not.
He placed it in her palm.
“The wedding is canceled.”
Maria closed her eyes.
Vanessa nodded.
“I understand.”
Lorenzo continued.
“That does not mean I hate you.”
She looked up.
“It would be easier if you did.”
“I know.”
“I loved you.”
“I believe you.”
That hurt her more.
He continued.
“But love without truth is just another room someone locks from the outside.”
Vanessa closed her fingers around the ring.
Lorenzo turned to David.
“You are going to the authorities.”
David nodded.
“Yes.”
“You will testify against Arthur.”
“Yes.”
“You will give them everything.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked at her father.
David’s eyes filled.
“I should have done it years ago.”
Maria said:
“So should I.”
Lorenzo turned.
She continued.
“I kept waiting until it was safe.”
He looked at Nico.
Maria followed his eyes.
“It never became safe.”
Lorenzo nodded.
“No.”
Then he walked toward the staircase.
Nico sat at the top step.
Still in yesterday’s clothes.
He had heard enough.
Lorenzo stopped halfway.
Nico looked at him.
“Are you mad at my dad?”
The question surprised everyone.
Lorenzo sat on the step below him.
“No.”
“Grandma said you might be.”
“I’m mad he didn’t come see me.”
Nico looked down.
“He was scared.”
“I know.”
“He kept your picture.”
Lorenzo stared.
“What picture?”
Nico reached into his pocket.
A tiny photograph.
Lorenzo at eighteen.
Standing beside a motorcycle.
Unaware anyone had taken it.
On the back, Michael had written:
MY LITTLE BROTHER IS TALLER THAN ME NOW.
Lorenzo laughed.
Then cried.
Not loudly.
Just once.
Nico leaned against him.
Lorenzo put an arm around the boy.
Maria turned away.
Vanessa did too.
A phone rang.
David checked the screen.
His face went white.
“Arthur.”
Lorenzo looked up.
David answered on speaker.
Arthur Cole’s voice came through.
Calm.
Old.
Almost bored.
“You have something that belongs to me.”
Lorenzo stood.
“The archive?”
“Yes.”
“It belongs to everyone you used.”
Arthur laughed softly.
“You think truth makes people free?”
Lorenzo looked around the ruined engagement hall.
“No.”
He looked at Maria.
At Vanessa.
At Nico.
“But lies kept us prisoners.”
Arthur’s voice hardened.
“If you release that archive, your father’s crimes become public too.”
Lorenzo did not hesitate.
“Then publish them.”
Silence.
Arthur had expected fear.
Lorenzo gave him nothing.
Then Arthur said:
“You sound like your mother.”
Lorenzo looked at Maria.
“No.”
May you like
He ended the call.
“I sound like someone who is done inheriting your secrets.”
