Chapter 8 - The Lie Keller Thought Would Break Them

Nobody moved.

Adrian looked at Elena.

She looked horrified.

Keller repeated through the phone:

“Ask her.”

Adrian’s voice stayed flat.

“Did you order Dad killed?”

Elena stared.

“No.”

Keller laughed.

“She will say that.”

Adrian looked at Thomas.

Thomas shook his head.

“I never heard that.”

Keller continued:

“Elena contacted your grandfather three days before Vigo.”

Elena whispered:

“Yes.”

Adrian turned.

“You contacted him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To warn him your father planned to testify.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“You warned Grandfather.”

“No.”

“I threatened him.”

“What?”

Elena stood.

“I told him if he harmed your father, I would release everything.”

Keller laughed again.

“A threat that brought everyone to the warehouse.”

Elena looked toward the phone.

“You brought them.”

Silence.

Keller stopped laughing.

Elena continued.

“You told my husband his father wanted to negotiate.”

Adrian stared.

Keller answered:

“I delivered messages.”

“You created the meeting.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor Marino had decided to surrender.”

Adrian frowned.

“And you could not allow it.”

“No.”

“Because Keller Trust was in the records.”

“Yes.”

There.

The truth.

Keller had needed Adrian’s father silent.

Adrian said:

“So you wanted Grandfather to kill him.”

Keller did not answer.

Thomas stared.

He understood too.

“You put the gun there.”

Keller whispered:

“I knew how angry Victor’s father was.”

“You manipulated him.”

“I gave him an opportunity.”

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“To murder his own son.”

Keller’s answer:

“He chose.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“So did Keller.”

Adrian nodded.

Both could be true.

He asked:

“What do you want now?”

“The keys.”

“No.”

“The vault contains documents that belong to my clients.”

“They belong to investigators.”

“Adrian.”

“No.”

Keller’s voice changed.

“You think exposing all of this makes you clean?”

Adrian almost smiled.

“No.”

“I think it makes us visible.”

Silence.

Then Keller said:

“Samuel is willing to walk away.”

Lucia stepped closer.

“Put my grandfather on.”

Keller paused.

Then another voice.

Older.

Samuel Cross.

“Lucia.”

She closed her eyes.

“Grandpa.”

“I never wanted you hurt.”

She laughed through tears.

“You arranged my relationship.”

“I created an opportunity.”

“No.”

Her voice became hard.

“You used me as a contract.”

Samuel said nothing.

Lucia continued.

“You wanted me to marry Adrian so you could control assets.”

“To keep them in the family.”

“What family?”

Silence.

“The one you built out of lies?”

Samuel sighed.

“Lucia.”

“No.”

Adrian watched her.

She was shaking.

But not backing down.

“Where are you?”

Samuel answered:

“Porto Commercial Vault.”

“Stay there.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m coming.”

Adrian touched her arm.

She looked at him.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“We’re not going alone.”

She nodded.

“Fine.”

Federal investigators moved first.

The vault facility was secured.

Keller and Samuel did not run.

Maybe they thought age made them untouchable.

Maybe they were tired.

Adrian entered with Elena.

Lucia beside him.

The red gown stayed at the hotel.

Good.

It had carried enough.

Samuel Cross sat in a chair.

Eighty-one.

Silver hair.

Cane beside him.

Robert Keller stood near the vault door.

Adrian held both keys.

Keller looked at them.

“Open it.”

Adrian looked at the investigator.

The investigator nodded.

Key one.

Key two.

The steel door unlocked.

Inside were three drawers.

And one empty space where a fourth had once been.

Adrian opened the first drawer.

Original ledgers.

Second.

Property deeds.

Third.

Audio tapes.

Keller’s face changed.

Elena noticed.

“You forgot those.”

Keller stared.

“What tapes?”

Adrian picked one up.

Label:

VIGO.

Three years ago.

Thomas went pale.

“I didn’t know.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

Adrian looked at Keller.

“You recorded the meeting.”

Keller did not answer.

The tape was played.

Voices.

Adrian’s father.

His grandfather.

Thomas.

Keller.

The argument.

Then Adrian’s father said:

“I’m giving everything to prosecutors.”

His grandfather shouted:

“You destroy this family.”

Then Keller’s voice:

“Victor is right.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at Keller.

On the tape, Keller continued:

“If he talks, we all go down.”

Then another voice.

Samuel Cross.

Lucia froze.

Her grandfather had been there.

Samuel whispered on the tape:

“Then he cannot leave.”

A gunshot.

Silence.

Adrian stopped the recording.

Lucia stared at Samuel.

“You ordered it.”

Samuel’s face broke.

“I was afraid.”

Lucia stepped backward.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I thought your father would go to prison.”

Thomas stared at his father.

“You killed Victor for me?”

Samuel shook his head.

“For all of us.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You killed him for yourself.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

Adrian handed the tape to investigators.

May you like

The case was no longer family history.

It was evidence.
