Chapter 9 - The Engagement Ring in the Drawer

Three months passed.
Victor remained in custody.
The criminal case was still moving.
Slowly.
Real justice usually does.
Vanessa moved into West Addison with Noah.
Elena took the upstairs room.
For the first time in eight years, the sisters argued about ordinary things.
Laundry.
Groceries.
Who forgot to buy cereal.
They loved every argument.
Luca visited Noah.
Not every day.
Not as a replacement father.
Just Luca.
At first Noah called him Mr. Moretti.
Then Luca.
That change took seven weeks.
Nobody rushed it.
Vanessa did not move back into the mansion.
She did not put the engagement ring on again.
Luca kept it in a desk drawer.
I knew because I dusted around the drawer.
Not inside.
Some things were not mine to touch.
One evening, Vanessa came for dinner.
No guests.
No candles.
No red gown.
Jeans.
Gray sweater.
Noah played chess with Sal in the library.
Sal cheated.
Noah caught him.
“I thought drivers were honest.”
Sal looked offended.
“Retired drivers are complicated.”
Luca heard from the doorway.
“You’re not retired.”
Sal smiled.
“Exactly.”
After dinner, Vanessa and Luca sat in the conservatory.
I brought coffee.
Then left.
Mostly.
I was still a housekeeper.
Housekeepers know how to disappear without going far.
Vanessa said, “The prosecutor called.”
Luca looked up.
“My father wants a deal.”
“For?”
“Financial charges. Obstruction.”
“And Daniel?”
“He denies everything.”
Luca nodded.
Vanessa watched him.
“You wanted more.”
“I wanted certainty.”
“So did I.”
He looked at her.
She continued.
“Elena found something.”
Luca sat straighter.
“What?”
“A voicemail Daniel left on her old phone.”
“Why now?”
“The phone was in storage.”
“What does it say?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Not what we expected.”
The next morning, Elena played it for all of us.
Daniel sounded tired.
Not terrified.
“Ellie, if something happens, don’t tell Vanessa Dad killed me.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“I don’t know that. I don’t want Noah growing up inside a lie.”
Luca looked at Elena.
“There’s more?”
She nodded.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“Victor is hiding money. I know that. He threatened me. I know that too. But the brakes…”
A long pause.
“I think someone else touched the car.”
Everyone went still.
Vanessa whispered, “Who?”
The voicemail answered.
“I saw Frankie outside the garage.”
Sal’s face changed.
Luca turned.
“Who is Frankie?”
Sal lowered his eyes.
“Frank Russo.”
My stomach dropped.
Russo.
Sal’s last name.
Luca stared at him.
“Your brother?”
Sal sat down.
“Yes.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Sal looked twenty years older.
“Frank worked security for Victor.”
Luca’s voice became quiet.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Did my father?”
Sal shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Elena played the final seconds.
Daniel said, “If I’m wrong, forgive me. If I’m right, Frankie knows why Victor wanted those records gone.”
The voicemail ended.
Nobody spoke.
Sal stared at the floor.
“My brother died twelve years ago.”
Luca looked at him.
“How?”
“Cancer.”
“Did he ever talk about Daniel?”
Sal closed his eyes.
“Once.”
We waited.
“He said Victor made him do something unforgivable.”
Vanessa whispered, “What?”
Sal looked at the red mitten sitting on the kitchen counter.
Then at Luca.
“I never asked.”
That was the worst confession Sal had made.
Not because he had done something.
Because he had chosen not to know.
May you like
Luca did not comfort him.
He just said, “Then we find out now.”
