Chapter 5 - The Call Alexander Was Never Meant to Hear

Alexander replayed the message once.

Only once.

That was enough.

Ethan cried silently beside Elena.

Mrs. Whitmore stood near the table with forty-three rings between them.

Alexander placed the recorder down.

“Get out.”

His mother stared.

“This is still my family.”

“No.”

His voice remained quiet.

“That is the first lie ending tonight.”

She took one step toward him.

“You don’t know what Evelyn found.”

“I know she begged me for help.”

“She found records she did not understand.”

“Then you should have let her show me.”

“She was going to the police.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

Elena looked at him.

That was the first time Mrs. Whitmore had admitted there was something to expose.

Alexander heard it too.

“What records?”

His mother said nothing.

“What did Evelyn find?”

Mrs. Whitmore looked toward the cabinet.

Alexander followed her eyes.

One envelope remained unopened.

No name.

Only a date.

The day before Evelyn disappeared.

Alexander reached for it.

Mrs. Whitmore moved.

Elena stepped between them.

It happened without thought.

Mrs. Whitmore stopped inches from her.

“You are forgetting your place.”

Elena’s hands trembled.

But she did not move.

“No, ma’am.”

She looked toward Ethan.

“I think I finally understand it.”

Alexander opened the envelope.

Inside were photocopies of bank transfers.

Charitable foundation accounts.

Private nursing facilities.

Settlement payments.

Names of women.

Clara Mercer.

Anne Whitmore.

Evelyn Whitmore.

And others Elena had never seen.

Alexander turned the pages.

“What is this?”

Mrs. Whitmore sat down.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Not elegant.

Old.

“Your grandfather built this family by controlling problems before they became public.”

Alexander stared.

“People were problems?”

“People who threatened the family were.”

Ethan pressed closer to Elena.

Alexander’s voice went cold.

“Clara Mercer?”

“She discovered your grandfather had a second family.”

“So you had her committed?”

“She was paid.”

“Her ring was hidden in a book.”

Mrs. Whitmore looked away.

Alexander lifted another page.

“Anne?”

His mother’s mouth tightened.

“My sister-in-law drank. She caused scenes.”

“Dad told me she moved to France.”

“She did eventually.”

“After three years in a private institution?”

Silence.

Alexander closed the file.

Then he understood.

This had not started with Evelyn.

Evelyn had found the system.

And Mrs. Whitmore had used it again.

“Why?”

His mother looked at him.

“Because Evelyn wanted to take Ethan and leave you.”

Alexander went still.

“That’s not what she said in the message.”

“She had already decided.”

“Why?”

Mrs. Whitmore’s eyes moved to the financial records.

“Because she thought you were becoming your father.”

Alexander said nothing.

“She believed this family swallowed people.”

His mother laughed bitterly.

“She was dramatic.”

Elena looked around the library.

The rings.

The letters.

The hidden admissions.

The deleted message.

“No,” Elena said.

Mrs. Whitmore looked at her.

Elena swallowed.

“She was right.”

Silence.

Alexander picked up his coat.

“Call the car.”

Elena nodded.

Mrs. Whitmore stood.

“You cannot take Evelyn out of Briar Glen without knowing her condition.”

Alexander looked at her.

“I am not going there to drag her home.”

His mother seemed surprised.

“I’m going there to ask her what she wants.”

That sentence changed the room.

Because control had been the problem.

Not just lies.

Not just money.

Control.

Alexander turned to Ethan.

“You’re staying here with Elena.”

The boy’s face fell.

“I want Mom.”

“I know.”

Alexander crouched.

“But I need to make sure she is safe before I bring you anywhere.”

Ethan looked down.

Then nodded.

Alexander touched the back of his head gently.

“I’m coming back.”

Ethan looked at the recorder.

“You promise?”

Alexander’s face tightened.

“Yes.”

He stood.

At the door, Elena stopped him.

“Sir.”

He turned.

She handed him Evelyn’s wedding ring.

Alexander looked at it.

Then closed his fingers around it.

Mrs. Whitmore watched.

“What are you going to tell her?”

Alexander looked at his mother.

“The truth.”

He paused.

“All of it.”

Then he left.

Three hours later, Elena’s phone rang.

Alexander’s name appeared on the screen.

She answered immediately.

“Sir?”

For several seconds, she heard nothing.

Then Alexander spoke.

His voice was broken.

“Elena.”

She stood.

“What happened?”

He breathed once.

Then said:

“She’s here.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“And?”

Another silence.

When Alexander spoke again, there was something in his voice she had never heard before.

May you like

Fear.

“She won’t see me.”
