Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Convent Gate

The convent was not really a convent anymore.

Retreat center.

Old brick.

Pine trees.

Quiet road.

Samuel walked to the gate alone.

At first.

Then Nico followed.

Victoria stayed beside me.

A woman opened the door.

Forty-two.

Dark hair.

Gray at the temples.

Victoria’s eyes.

Samuel stopped.

Anna Greene.

Alive.

She looked at Samuel.

Not recognition.

Suspicion.

Then Eleanor stepped out behind her.

Victoria stared.

“Grandma.”

Eleanor looked ashamed.

“I came yesterday.”

Samuel could barely speak.

“Anna.”

The woman frowned.

Eleanor whispered:

“He is your father.”

Anna looked at her.

Then Samuel.

No tears.

No dramatic embrace.

Just silence.

Finally:

“You are late.”

Samuel nodded.

“Forty-two years.”

“Yes.”

“I thought you died.”

“I thought you did.”

Anna looked at Eleanor.

“That seems convenient.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Anna.”

Anna looked at her.

“You must be Victoria.”

Victoria started crying.

“You knew about me.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t know about you.”

“I know.”

That hurt more.

Nico asked:

“Why were you working for Carlo?”

Anna looked at him.

“You are Nico.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“You have your father’s eyes.”

Nico’s face changed.

“You knew him?”

“Yes.”

“Before he died?”

“Once.”

Samuel stared.

“When?”

Anna looked toward Eleanor.

“Sixteen years ago.”

The same year Henry stopped Anna from reaching Samuel.

Anna explained.

She discovered the warehouse at twenty-five.

Carlo caught her.

Instead of turning her over to Henry, he offered a choice.

Work for him.

Or disappear into the clinic system Henry controlled.

She chose Carlo.

Samuel looked sick.

“You worked for the man who destroyed everyone.”

Anna corrected him.

“I survived him.”

Nico understood the difference.

“What did you do?”

“Cleaned financial records. Moved shell companies. Closed accounts.”

“Illegal.”

“Yes.”

“Why stay?”

“At first, to find Samuel.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

“And later?”

“To find proof Henry put me in Saint Mercy.”

Victoria whispered:

“He did.”

Anna nodded.

“I know now.”

Eleanor said:

“I helped get her out.”

Victoria turned.

“You knew where she was?”

“After six months.”

“And you kept her hidden from Samuel.”

“Yes.”

Samuel looked at Eleanor.

“Why?”

“Henry threatened Anna again.”

Anna answered instead.

“Because everyone thought hiding me was love.”

Nico looked at her.

That sentence felt familiar.

Anna continued.

“Carlo helped me disappear after Saint Mercy.”

Samuel stared.

“He helped you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Anna looked at Nico.

“Because Carlo hated Henry.”

Nico frowned.

“Partners.”

“Partners who stopped trusting each other.”

Anna nodded toward the files Nico carried.

“By then they were blackmailing each other.”

Victoria asked:

“Where is Carlo now?”

Anna’s face changed.

“Coming here.”

Samuel looked at the road.

“How do you know?”

“Because Eleanor called him.”

Everyone turned.

Eleanor went pale.

Victoria whispered:

“Grandma.”

Eleanor started crying.

“I had to.”

Anna stared.

“You told him?”

“He said he would release the records against Victoria.”

Nico laughed quietly.

“Another threat.”

Eleanor said:

“He has proof Henry used Victoria’s trust fund to cover old debts.”

Victoria looked confused.

“My trust?”

Anna shook her head.

“That is false.”

Eleanor stared.

“What?”

Anna walked inside.

Returned with a folder.

Victoria’s trust documents.

Clean.

Untouched.

Anna said:

“Carlo lied.”

Eleanor covered her face.

Again.

One lie.

One frightened person.

One terrible choice.

A car appeared on the road.

Black sedan.

Nico stepped forward.

Samuel whispered:

“Carlo.”

Anna looked at Nico.

“He wants something from me.”

“What?”

“The final ledger.”

Nico frowned.

“I thought Samuel found it.”

“He found one.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

Victoria stared.

“Where is the last?”

Anna touched the locket around her neck.

Not a heart.

A small key.

Samuel looked at it.

“What does it open?”

Anna answered:

“A bank box.”

Nico asked:

“What is inside?”

“Every payment Henry and Carlo made after your father disappeared.”

Nico’s expression hardened.

“My father?”

Anna nodded.

“Your father did not spend the rest of his life only searching.”

Samuel looked at her.

“What else did he do?”

Anna met Nico’s eyes.

“He built a case.”

Carlo’s car stopped at the gate.

Anna continued.

“And six years ago, before he died, he gave the evidence to me.”

Nico stared.

“My father found you.”

“Yes.”

“Did he know where my mother was?”

Anna nodded.

Nico stopped breathing.

“He found Isabella?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he go to her?”

Anna’s eyes filled.

“Because by then, he believed she had built a new life and did not want him.”

Nico closed his eyes.

Another lie.

He whispered:

“Who told him that?”

Anna looked toward Eleanor.

Eleanor cried harder.

May you like

And Nico understood before she spoke.
