Chapter 6 - Richard’s Hidden Account

Richard sat down.
Isabella stared at him.
“Dad?”
Alessandro looked at Victor.
“What do you mean?”
Victor laughed softly.
“Everyone thinks I stole alone.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Victor continued.
“I moved the money.”
“But Richard created the accounts.”
Silence.
Isabella stepped back.
“No.”
Victor looked at her.
“Your father was very good with paper.”
Alessandro looked at Richard.
“Is it true?”
Richard whispered:
“Yes.”
Isabella covered her mouth.
Alessandro’s face hardened.
“How much?”
Richard did not answer.
Victor did.
“Twenty-three million.”
Howard stared.
Elena looked sick.
Alessandro stepped closer.
“You stole from my father’s company.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“It started as temporary transfers.”
Victor laughed.
“They always do.”
Richard continued.
“My firm was collapsing.”
“I thought I could replace the money.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
“And Victor found out.”
“Yes.”
“So he blackmailed you.”
“Yes.”
Alessandro looked at the hotel key.
“That is why you protected him.”
Richard nodded.
“That is why I altered the guest registry.”
“That is why I authorized the fake cremation.”
“That is why I kept Elena hidden.”
Every answer was quieter.
Every answer worse.
Isabella stared at her father.
“Did you know Victor planned to kill Antonio?”
Richard looked at her.
“I knew he threatened him.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I knew there might be violence.”
Silence.
Isabella began crying.
Alessandro looked at Elena.
“You thought Richard saved you.”
“At first.”
“When did you learn the truth?”
“Seven years ago.”
“How?”
“I found a copy of one offshore account statement.”
“Whose name?”
Elena looked at Richard.
“His.”
Alessandro stared.
“Why didn’t you come back then?”
“Because Victor found me first.”
The room went still.
Alessandro turned toward Victor.
“What did you do?”
Victor’s face remained calm.
Elena continued.
“He came to Toronto.”
“He told me if I returned, he would destroy you.”
Alessandro frowned.
“How?”
“He said you had already taken over parts of the family business.”
“At twenty-five.”
“Yes.”
“He said he had records that could make it look like you ordered crimes committed by older men.”
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
“False records.”
“Yes.”
Howard said:
“I’ve seen some.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“Where?”
“In Elena’s second folder.”
Elena handed it over.
Invoices.
Transfers.
Orders.
Damaging.
Convincing.
All carrying Alessandro’s initials.
Dated when he was barely old enough to sign anything.
He stared.
“Victor built a future case against me.”
“Yes.”
Elena nodded.
“To keep me quiet.”
Victor smiled.
“And it worked.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“For seven years.”
Then handed the folder to security.
May you like
“But not tonight.”
Victor’s smile faded.
