Chapter 6 - The Manager Who Worked for Carlo

Davis entered with both hands visible.

Sweating.

Always sweating.

Enzo’s guards searched him.

No weapon.

Khloe stared.

“You helped Sal.”

Davis nodded.

“Yes.”

“You threatened Tommy’s job.”

“Yes.”

“You set up the spill.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Davis looked at Enzo.

“Carlo pays me.”

Enzo’s face hardened.

“How long?”

“Eleven years.”

Silence.

The Onyx Room.

Private meetings.

Routes.

Disappearances.

Davis had been standing at the host station the whole time.

Invisible in a different way.

Enzo asked:

“You sold information.”

“Yes.”

“About my men.”

“Yes.”

“Three disappeared.”

Davis closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“Did you know they would die?”

“One.”

Enzo moved forward.

Khloe stepped between them.

Not touching him.

Just enough.

Enzo looked at her.

“Move.”

“No.”

Davis stared.

Khloe said:

“You want answers.”

Enzo’s jaw tightened.

Then he stepped back.

Davis breathed again.

Khloe asked:

“Why come here?”

“To warn you.”

She laughed.

“You staged a threat against me yesterday.”

“I did not call you.”

Khloe went still.

“Carlo did.”

Davis shook his head.

“No.”

Enzo frowned.

“Then who?”

Davis looked toward the ledger.

“Victor Dane.”

Silence.

Victor.

Second name on the napkin.

Davis continued.

“Victor works for Carlo.”

Enzo said:

“I know.”

Davis looked surprised.

Enzo smiled coldly.

“I did not say I knew nothing.”

Khloe asked:

“Why would Victor threaten me?”

“Because he knows Rosa’s missing pages still exist.”

“Where?”

Davis looked at the cassette.

“Your father hid them.”

Khloe stared.

“The tape says he never learned who betrayed who.”

“He lied.”

Silence.

Davis continued.

“Your father knew.”

Khloe’s throat tightened.

“Who betrayed them?”

Davis looked at Enzo.

“His father.”

Enzo went still.

“No.”

Davis swallowed.

“Antonio Bianke told Carlo that Rosa had the ledger.”

Enzo’s face changed.

“My father helped Rosa.”

“At first.”

“Why betray her?”

“Because Carlo threatened you.”

Silence.

Khloe looked at Enzo.

He was seventeen.

Same age as the photograph.

Davis continued.

“Carlo told Antonio that if Rosa went public, Enzo would be charged in a weapons case.”

Enzo stared.

“I had nothing to do with any weapons case.”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Carlo had paperwork ready.”

Khloe whispered:

“Like my mother.”

Davis nodded.

“Like everyone.”

Enzo turned away.

His father had chosen his son over the witness.

Fear.

Family.

Silence.

Khloe said quietly:

“He was protecting you.”

Enzo looked at her.

“No.”

Then after a moment:

“He was protecting himself from losing me.”

Khloe understood the difference.

Davis said:

“Antonio warned Rosa after he betrayed her.”

Enzo turned back.

“What?”

“He told her to run.”

“Then she escaped.”

“Yes.”

“With the ledger.”

“Yes.”

Khloe asked:

“What happened to the missing pages?”

Davis looked at her.

“Your father kept them.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Khloe laughed bitterly.

“Then why are you useful?”

Davis almost smiled.

“Because I know who does.”

“Who?”

“Father Luca.”

Silence.

The priest.

Third name on Enzo’s list.

Davis continued.

“Rosa confessed everything to him before she died.”

Khloe’s eyes filled.

“My mother died in a car accident.”

Davis looked at her.

“No.”

The room went still.

Khloe’s face emptied.

“What?”

“She was hit by a car.”

“Yes.”

“But it was not an accident.”

Enzo stared.

Davis continued.

“Victor Dane was driving.”

Khloe stopped breathing.

Her mother.

Dead when Khloe was sixteen.

The one event Khloe had never questioned.

Davis whispered:

“Carlo ordered it.”

Khloe’s knees nearly gave out.

Enzo caught her elbow.

She pulled away.

Not angry at him.

Just needing space.

“Proof.”

Davis nodded.

“Father Luca has it.”

Khloe looked at Enzo.

His face was cold.

Dangerous.

“Where is the priest?”

Frankie checked his phone.

“Church.”

Davis shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at him.

“He left an hour ago.”

“Where?”

Davis answered:

“Bus station.”

Khloe frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Victor knows he has the pages.”

Enzo was already moving.

Khloe grabbed the ledger.

Enzo looked at her.

“You stay.”

She stared at him.

“No.”

“Khloe.”

“My mother died because of those pages.”

“I know.”

“You do not get to finish her story without me.”

Silence.

Then Enzo nodded.

“Fine.”

Davis whispered:

“There is something else.”

Enzo stopped.

“What?”

Davis looked at Khloe.

“Father Luca is not just a priest.”

Khloe waited.

“He is your uncle.”

Silence.

“My what?”

“Rosa’s brother.”

Khloe stared.

Her mother had never mentioned a brother.

Davis nodded.

“His name was Luca Romano before he entered the church.”

May you like

And suddenly the priest who recognized her voice in the corridor was the only living person from her mother’s family she had left.
