Chapter 6 - The Fire That Bought Two Families

Isabella’s grandfather was named Conrad Voss.

Eighty-six.

His hands shook now.

Not from age.

Damian stood in front of him.

“My father says you started the warehouse fire.”

Conrad looked at Harold.

Then at Damian.

“That is one dead man’s accusation.”

Lucia stepped forward.

“He isn’t dead.”

Conrad’s face changed.

Damian noticed.

“You know.”

Silence.

“You know my father is alive.”

Conrad looked away.

Damian’s voice dropped.

“How long?”

Conrad whispered:

“Years.”

Isabella stared at him.

“Grandfather.”

He ignored her.

Damian continued.

“Did you start the fire?”

Conrad closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“Why?”

“To destroy records.”

“What records?”

“Property deeds.”

“Contracts.”

“Payments.”

Lucia whispered:

“Evidence.”

“Yes.”

Damian’s jaw tightened.

“Four people died.”

Conrad looked at him.

“That was not intended.”

Harold laughed bitterly.

“Fire rarely asks what was intended.”

Conrad’s face hardened.

Damian asked:

“Did my grandfather know?”

“Yes.”

“Did my father?”

Conrad hesitated.

Damian stepped closer.

“Did he know?”

“He knew records would be destroyed.”

“But not about the fire?”

Conrad shook his head.

“No.”

Damian looked at the confession.

Marco had written the same.

He believed them.

Not because he wanted to.

Because the details matched.

Isabella’s father spoke.

“My father used the fire to erase debts.”

Damian turned.

“What debts?”

“Debts owed to families they had forced out.”

Damian looked sick.

“So after the fire, they owned everything cleanly.”

Conrad nodded.

“Yes.”

“And my mother discovered the accounts.”

“Yes.”

“Then disappeared.”

Lucia looked at Conrad.

“You told Giovanni I had copies.”

Conrad nodded.

“I did.”

Damian’s face hardened.

“You caused her disappearance.”

Conrad whispered:

“Yes.”

Isabella began crying.

Damian looked at her.

Then back at Conrad.

“Where is my father?”

Conrad said nothing.

Damian stared.

“You know that too.”

May you like

Conrad finally answered:

“Yes.”
