Chapter 8 - The Wedding Agreement

Vincent was charged.

Not only for the kidnapping.

Trent found years of transfers.

Blackmail.

Hidden accounts.

Payments to Mercy Document Services.

And surveillance on Jolene.

Richard Langford cooperated.

Desmond did too.

The succession agreement became evidence.

Then public.

That ruined 3 board members.

2 attorneys.

And my wedding.

The invitations had already gone out.

The venue had been paid.

Monica stood in my office 4 days later.

No ring.

No makeup.

No family with her.

“Are we canceling?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

No tears at first.

Then:

“Because you still love Jolene?”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“And because I lied.”

“Yes.”

She accepted both.

I continued:

“But that is not the only reason.”

She looked at me.

“I do not know who I am when I am with you anymore.”

Her face broke.

I kept going.

“You knew our engagement had business behind it.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Jolene was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“You asked her to leave.”

“Yes.”

“You did not know Vincent would move.”

“No.”

“I believe you.”

She started crying.

“That somehow feels worse.”

“I know.”

She wiped her face.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“I still do.”

“I know.”

She laughed weakly.

“You really like that sentence.”

“Today.”

She looked at the empty ring box on my desk.

“What happens to the Langford deal?”

“It dies.”

“My father will hate that.”

“Good.”

She almost smiled.

Then serious again.

“What happens to Jolene?”

I looked out the window.

“That is her decision.”

Monica nodded.

“Good.”

She left.

No screaming.

No revenge.

No dramatic return.

Just a door closing on something that had been real and manipulated at the same time.

Jolene came to the warehouse the next day.

Elias asleep against her chest.

I stood when she entered.

“You brought him.”

“Yes.”

I looked at him.

“Can I hold him?”

She studied me.

Then nodded.

The first time I held my son, he opened his eyes.

Dark.

Calm.

He grabbed my finger.

I stopped breathing.

Jolene watched.

“He does that.”

I laughed softly.

“Manipulative.”

“Family trait.”

I looked at her.

That almost became a smile.

Then:

“Why did you come?”

“To talk.”

“About?”

“Everything.”

We sat.

I held Elias.

Jolene said:

“I did not fake my death because I wanted to disappear from you.”

“I know.”

“I still agreed.”

“Yes.”

“I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was protecting him.”

I looked at the baby.

“I know.”

“That does not make it right.”

“No.”

She nodded.

Silence.

Then I asked:

“Do you still love me?”

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“But?”

“But I do not trust your world.”

Fair.

“I do not either.”

She looked surprised.

I continued:

“I spent my life thinking control was safety.”

“Is it?”

“No.”

I looked at Elias.

“It just makes fear organized.”

Jolene smiled faintly.

“That sounds like Desmond.”

“Unfortunately.”

Then:

“What do you want?”

She looked at me.

“For Elias?”

“For you.”

Silence.

“I want a life where nobody can erase me.”

I nodded.

“And I want you in his life.”

My throat tightened.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Under what conditions?”

She almost laughed.

“You sound like a contract.”

“Occupational damage.”

She became serious.

“No lies.”

“Yes.”

“No disappearing people.”

“Yes.”

“No deciding what I can handle.”

“Yes.”

“No using him for family business.”

“Never.”

She studied me.

Then nodded.

“That is a start.”

Not forgiveness.

May you like

Not reunion.

A start.
