Chapter 8 - The Restaurant Was the Only Place Caleb Wanted Everyone

The microfilm was not a copy of Elena's ledger.

It was Dennis's insurance.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

One page connected Vittorio Cavallo.

Another Caleb Moretti.

Another a police detective.

Another city contractor.

Then one name Sera recognized.

Benny Russo.

Owner of the diner.

She stared.

"No."

Marco looked at the film.

"Benny?"

Sera shook her head.

"He gave me shifts when nobody else would."

Elena said quietly:

"That does not mean he is innocent."

Sera looked at her.

"It also doesn't mean he's guilty."

Good.

She had learned something from all of them.

They called Benny.

No answer.

Then Marco's phone rang.

Nico.

Marco answered.

A child's voice came first.

"Dad?"

Then Nico.

Breathing hard.

"Marco."

"Where are you?"

"Restaurant."

Sera went cold.

The diner.

Of course.

Nico continued.

"Caleb wants everyone there."

"Why?"

"He says that's where it started."

Sera looked at the microfilm.

The diner had been built on an old Cavallo warehouse lot.

She remembered Benny once saying the basement flooded because the building was "older than common sense."

Marco asked:

"Maya?"

"With me."

"Safe?"

"For now."

Then another voice.

Caleb.

"Bring the film."

Rafe took the phone.

"Caleb."

Silence.

Then a laugh.

"Little brother."

Rafe's face changed.

Sera had never heard grief become anger that quickly.

"Let the girl go."

"Bring Mother."

Elena said:

"I'm here."

Caleb went silent.

"Hello."

Elena's voice stayed calm.

"You always did need an audience."

Caleb laughed.

"Seven o'clock."

The line died.

Marco looked at Sera.

"We're not doing what he wants."

"Yes, we are."

Rafe turned.

"What?"

Sera held up the microfilm.

"He wants everyone in one room because he thinks the film gives him leverage."

Marco stared.

"And?"

"We make sure it gives us leverage first."

They copied it.

Three times.

One went to federal investigators through Elena's attorney.

One went to a reporter Marco hated enough to trust with revenge.

One stayed with Sera.

At seven, the diner was closed.

Lights on.

Blinds half drawn.

Benny sat in a booth.

Hands visible.

Nico beside him.

Maya under the table, clutching his leg.

Caleb stood near the counter.

He looked like Rafe if life had sanded away everything soft.

Same height.

Same eyes.

No warmth.

He smiled when they entered.

"Family."

Rafe said nothing.

Elena stepped forward.

"Let the child leave."

Caleb looked at Maya.

"She can go when I have the film."

Sera held it up.

"You mean this?"

His eyes moved to her.

"So you're the girl."

"Apparently."

"You remembered me."

"Hard face to forget."

Rafe looked at Sera.

She kept her eyes on Caleb.

He smiled.

"You watched me kill Dennis."

"Yes."

Benny flinched.

Sera noticed.

Caleb noticed her noticing.

"There it is."

Sera looked at Benny.

He looked old suddenly.

"What were you to him?"

Benny whispered:

"I drove."

Silence.

Sera's chest tightened.

"That night?"

He nodded.

"I didn't know they were going to kill him."

"Did you know what Dennis was doing?"

"Some."

"How much?"

"Enough to hate myself later."

Sera laughed without humor.

"Convenient."

Benny looked at her.

"I hired you because I knew who you were."

That hurt more than it should have.

"You knew?"

"Elena told me years ago."

Sera looked at Elena.

Elena's face tightened.

Another secret.

Of course.

Benny continued.

"I watched out for you."

"By paying minimum wage?"

He almost smiled.

"You wouldn't take help."

"Did you try?"

"No."

"Then don't romanticize it."

Benny lowered his eyes.

Fair.

Caleb tapped the counter.

"Touching."

Marco looked at him.

"What do you want?"

"My share."

"Of what?"

"Everything my father built."

Rafe said:

"Our father died broke."

Caleb laughed.

"Because Vittorio stole him blind."

Elena said:

"Your father sold children to cover routes."

Caleb's smile disappeared.

"Careful."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"You want to turn inheritance into morality."

Silence.

"You helped Vittorio use foster homes. You killed Dennis because he copied names. You sold Marco's routes because you wanted a war expensive enough to force him to sell."

Marco stared.

Caleb shrugged.

"Business."

Rafe's jaw tightened.

Caleb looked at him.

"And you were always good at following orders."

Rafe moved.

Sera caught his sleeve.

He stopped.

Caleb smiled.

"Still needs a handler."

Rafe looked at Sera.

She let go.

"Not a handler."

Then to Caleb:

"Just someone who notices bait."

His smile faded.

Good.

Sera tossed the microfilm onto the counter.

Caleb looked at it.

Did not move.

Smart.

"Pick it up," she said.

"No."

"Why?"

"You want me away from the girl."

Sera nodded.

"Yes."

Caleb looked impressed.

Then the back door opened.

Police.

Federal agents.

Caleb moved fast.

Gun.

Rafe moved faster.

But not fastest.

Sera hit Caleb's wrist with the metal napkin holder.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Marco pulled Maya away.

Nico dropped behind the booth.

Caleb turned on Sera.

He was bigger.

Better trained than Dennis.

Better than Rafe expected.

Not better than a woman who had spent eighteen years thinking in angles.

She drove her shoulder into his center.

Hooked the knee.

Used the counter.

Four square inches of leverage.

No wasted motion.

Caleb hit the floor.

Hard.

The whole diner went silent.

Rafe stared down at his brother.

Marco looked at Sera.

Benny whispered:

"Jesus."

May you like

Sera looked at Caleb.

"That's twice this restaurant has underestimated a waitress."
