Chapter 7 - The Payroll Scheme Was Evidence Against Luca

The incapacitation order was elegant.

That made Luca hate it more.

Matteo had built a case.

Forged executive authorization.

Misappropriated employee wages.

Millions moving through shell accounts.

A compromised signing token.

Internal security failures.

If presented to the old Moretti emergency council, it looked like one thing:

Luca Moretti had lost control.

Belini read the summary.

“He used the theft to create incompetence.”

Marco nodded.

“And criminal exposure.”

Luca almost smiled.

“I appreciate the distinction.”

Emma looked at the employee records.

Forty-one people had become supporting evidence in a family power struggle they knew nothing about.

That angered her more than the money.

“What happens if the council accepts it?”

Alessandra answered.

“Matteo temporarily controls the emergency network.”

“For how long?”

“Until Luca proves capacity.”

Marco looked at the forged records.

“Which could take months.”

“Long enough to move the twenty-six million.”

“And people,” Luca said.

Alessandra nodded.

Safe-house identities.

Protected relatives.

Former witnesses.

Retired captains.

Everything his father had hidden.

Luca stood.

“No council.”

Alessandra looked at him.

“You cannot simply ignore the charter.”

“I’m not.”

He looked at Marco.

“Call them.”

Belini stared.

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

Emma understood.

Matteo expected Luca to fight privately.

Luca intended to force the accusation into daylight.

Within six hours, seven senior Moretti representatives arrived at the Geneva villa.

Old men.

Two women.

One retired judge.

One former union leader.

Nobody raised their voice.

Nobody needed to.

Matteo joined remotely.

Silver-haired.

Calm.

Respectable.

Emma had expected a villain.

He looked like a grandfather.

That bothered her.

Matteo addressed Luca.

“You have endangered the family.”

Luca sat at the end of the table.

“How?”

“Your signature authorized theft from employees.”

“No.”

“Your token was used.”

“Yes.”

“Your estate allowed unauthorized server access.”

“Yes.”

“Millions moved through accounts tied to your organization.”

“Yes.”

Matteo almost smiled.

“Thank you.”

Luca looked bored.

“For saving you time?”

“For admitting failure.”

Emma saw the trap.

Luca did too.

He did not defend himself.

Instead he looked at her.

“Emma.”

Every face turned.

Her stomach dropped.

She had not expected this.

Luca said, “Tell them what happened.”

Belini stared at him.

“You’re putting a maid before the council?”

Luca did not look away from Emma.

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“I’m putting the victim before the men discussing her money.”

Emma stood.

Her hands trembled once.

Then stopped.

She told them.

Her real salary.

The reduced deposit.

The fake fees.

The formula.

Belini’s warning.

The audit.

The impostor.

The one-euro original rule.

The later percentage edit.

She did not dramatize it.

The facts were enough.

When she finished, Matteo said:

“An emotional story does not alter digital evidence.”

Emma looked at him.

“No.”

Then she placed two payroll versions on the table.

“But timestamps do.”

Marco almost smiled.

The original rule:

€1 deduction.

Created inside Luca’s office.

Three minutes later:

percentage-based deduction.

Edited remotely.

Administrator:

M. Rinaldi.

The room changed.

Matteo’s expression did not.

Only his eyes.

Luca noticed.

“So did everyone else.

Matteo spoke.

“My credentials were compromised.”

Emma almost laughed.

Luca did.

Softly.

“That defense is popular today.”

Alessandra stepped into view.

Matteo stopped breathing.

The council went silent.

One woman whispered her name.

Alessandra looked at the camera.

“Hello, Matteo.”

For the first time, he lost control.

Only for a second.

Enough.

Luca placed the old ledgers on the table.

Car explosion payments.

Clinic payments.

Reserve transfers.

Dario’s instructions.

Matteo recovered.

“You expect them to believe a dead woman?”

Luca looked around the table.

“No.”

He leaned back.

“I expect them to believe records.”

The retired judge opened the ledger.

Then another.

Then the original proxy file.

The council suspended the incapacitation order immediately.

Matteo’s access to the emergency network was frozen.

But before Marco could lock the remaining accounts, one alert appeared.

Matteo had anticipated failure.

A manual release had been triggered.

Not for money.

For identities.

Twenty-three protected names were being downloaded from the emergency network.

Luca’s face hardened.

“He never needed the council.”

Alessandra understood.

“He needed us distracted.”

Marco checked the destination.

One location.

Chicago.

Moretti estate.

May you like

Emma felt cold.

Someone inside Luca’s house was still working for Matteo.
