Chapter 7 - The Flower Opened the Box Antonio Died For

The box was buried beneath a loose floorboard in Sofia’s house.

Small.

Iron.

Old.

The flower engraving on Emma’s medallion fit perfectly into a recessed lock.

Luca watched.

Belini watched.

Sofia did not.

She looked toward the lake.

As if opening the box reopened twenty-three years with it.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a ledger.

Paper.

Real.

Unremarkable.

Enough to ruin dead men and living families.

Emma opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Police officers.

Judges.

Dock supervisors.

Contractors.

Moretti.

Castellano.

DeLuca.

Vale.

Luca’s face hardened when he saw his grandfather’s name.

Emma looked at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Sofia answered.

“He found out later.”

Emma turned pages.

“Then why is he here?”

“Because your grandfather paid Moretti after Antonio died.”

Luca looked at Sofia.

“For what?”

“To keep the war from reaching the family.”

Emma understood.

Blood money disguised as peace.

Sofia continued.

“He hated what Moretti had done.”

“But he paid him anyway.”

“Yes.”

Luca looked away.

No defense.

Emma respected that.

Then she found Daniel Vale.

Her father.

Real Daniel.

Payments ended twenty-five years ago.

One note.

REFUSED FURTHER COLLECTION.

Emma frowned.

“Collection?”

Sofia sat.

“Daniel handled debt collections for Moretti.”

Emma’s stomach turned.

“My father was part of this.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“He tried to leave.”

Like Antonio.

Like Marianne.

Like Sofia.

Everyone who tried to leave paid something.

“Moretti killed him?”

Sofia nodded.

“Before you were born.”

Emma closed her eyes.

The man who raised her had lied.

But perhaps to protect her.

“Who was he?”

Sofia smiled through tears.

“Thomas Bennett.”

Emma opened her eyes.

“My father’s friend?”

“Daniel’s closest friend.”

Emma remembered old photographs.

A man always standing slightly behind Daniel.

Thomas.

Uncle Tom.

Then after Daniel’s death—

Father.

“He raised me.”

“Yes.”

“Why use Daniel’s name?”

“Because Moretti believed Daniel had hidden records. Thomas wanted Moretti watching the wrong identity.”

Emma almost laughed.

A dead man used as camouflage.

Again.

“Did Thomas know Sofia?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know everything?”

“Most.”

Emma thought of childhood moves.

No photographs.

No old documents.

Memorized phone numbers.

It made sense now.

Not random.

Operational.

Careful.

Then Belini saw something.

A page near the back.

Her father’s initials.

Beside them, one later payment.

Eight years ago.

Emma’s pulse jumped.

The week Marianne died.

Sofia looked at the entry.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Emma asked.

Sofia whispered:

“That payment wasn’t in the copy.”

Belini leaned closer.

“To whom?”

A code.

E.M.

Luca looked at Marco.

“Find it.”

Marco photographed the page.

Sofia stared at the code.

Then suddenly stood.

“I know what it means.”

Everyone turned.

“Elias Moretti.”

Belini’s uncle.

Hospital board member.

The man who could change records.

Emma felt cold.

May you like

Sofia’s voice shook.

“Your mother did not die only because she was sick.”
