Chapter 8 - The Archive Nicolas Wanted More Than the Company

The Grand Aurelia ballroom was empty.
Champagne glasses still sat on tables.
Flowers still looked expensive.
The orchestra had gone home.
Only evidence remained.
Marco led them beneath the gallery to the private audit room.
Door open.
No forced entry.
Nicolas had used Luca’s dead-company credential.
Inside, one server rack was missing.
Emma stared.
“He took the entire archive?”
Marco shook his head.
“Only the mirrored audit node.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“That contains everything from Navarro.”
“And Moretti,” Marco said.
Silence.
The confidential audit had cross-referenced port transactions.
Which meant the node contained not only Navarro fraud.
It contained every Moretti counterparty connected to the same shipping lanes.
Names.
Payments.
Insurance.
Customs.
Political contacts.
Enough leverage to control half the waterfront.
Carlo whispered, “That’s what Nicolas wanted.”
His phone rang.
Nicolas.
Of course.
Carlo answered on speaker.
“Brother.”
Nicolas laughed softly.
“You finally sound disappointed.”
“Where are you?”
“Somewhere Father cannot reach me.”
Roberto was in federal custody.
That did not make the sentence reassuring.
Luca spoke.
“You have my server.”
Nicolas paused.
“Moretti.”
“You used my dead company.”
“Efficient.”
“You framed me.”
“Necessary.”
Emma stepped closer.
“And my father?”
Silence.
Nicolas knew her voice.
“Emma.”
“You were there when Daniel died.”
Carlo turned sharply.
Nicolas did not answer quickly enough.
Emma felt it.
“Carlo recorded Roberto before Daniel died. You were already working for your father.”
Nicolas sighed.
“I was driving the second car.”
Carlo closed his eyes.
There it was.
The final witness.
Emma’s throat tightened.
“You watched.”
“I followed.”
“You watched.”
“Yes.”
Luca looked at Emma.
She stayed standing.
Nicolas continued.
“Daniel ran because he thought Vale could protect the ledger. Father ordered us to stop him.”
“How?”
No answer.
Emma’s voice hardened.
“How?”
“Force him off the road.”
Silence.
Carlo whispered, “You told me it was an accident.”
“I told you what Father needed you to believe.”
Carlo’s face emptied.
The brothers had both been used differently.
Nicolas continued.
“Now I have the only complete archive.”
Luca’s voice stayed calm.
“What do you want?”
“One hundred million.”
Carlo laughed.
Nicolas stopped.
“You think that is funny?”
“No.”
Carlo looked almost sad.
“You still think Father’s money exists.”
Silence.
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
Carlo opened Roberto’s seized accounts.
Frozen.
Overleveraged.
Collateralized.
The Salazar fortune was mostly debt.
Roberto had built power on borrowed money and stolen contracts.
Nicolas did not know.
That was why he needed leverage.
Luca understood.
“You have no buyer.”
Nicolas said nothing.
“No exit.”
Silence.
“And now no father willing to protect you.”
The line stayed open.
Emma spoke.
“You do have one thing.”
Nicolas answered.
“The archive.”
“No.”
Emma looked at Luca.
“Evidence.”
Nicolas went quiet.
She continued.
“You can sell blackmail to criminals.”
A pause.
“Or give prosecutors the network and buy yourself a life.”
Carlo looked at her.
So did Luca.
Nicolas laughed.
“You think I trust prosecutors?”
“No.”
Emma’s voice remained calm.
“But you trust leverage.”
She knew his language now.
“Your best leverage is being the only Salazar who can prove everything.”
Silence.
Then Nicolas gave them an address.
A private marina.
One hour.
He wanted immunity terms.
Luca looked at Emma after the call.
“That was reckless.”
“You negotiate with criminals.”
“Yes.”
“So do I now.”
“I noticed.”
At the marina, Nicolas stood alone beside a yacht.
The server case at his feet.
No weapon visible.
Federal agents waited out of sight.
Nicolas looked at Carlo.
Then Emma.
Then Luca.
“I want protection.”
Emma looked at the server.
“I want my father’s truth.”
Nicolas nodded.
For the first time, the bargain was simple.
He handed over the archive.
Then one final file appeared on the restored server.
A video.
Daniel Navarro.
Recorded the night before he died.
He looked tired.
Afraid.
But alive.
May you like
And the first sentence changed Emma’s life again.
“If Emma is watching this, then Edmund finally stopped obeying me.”
