Chapter 8 - The Man Behind Vale Logistics

Victor was arrested before sunrise.
Daniel was freed.
Emma hugged him only after everyone stopped moving.
Then hit him once in the chest.
Not hard.
Enough.
“You were dead.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
“I buried you without a body.”
“I know.”
“I hated you.”
“I know.”
She hugged him again.
Luca looked away.
Marco did not.
Marco was sentimental.
Apparently.
Victor refused to talk.
That lasted four hours.
Then federal investigators showed him Vale’s payment records.
Victor changed lawyers.
Still no confession.
But they did not need one immediately.
The receiver watch gave them routes.
Daniel gave them surveillance.
Nathan gave them three years of financial work.
Emma gave them the ledger pattern she had memorized before disappearing.
And Luca gave them something nobody expected.
Access.
His ports.
His companies.
His shipping logs.
Belini stared at him.
“You’re opening everything?”
“Yes.”
“To federal investigators?”
“Yes.”
“They’ll examine you too.”
“I know.”
That mattered.
Emma saw it.
Luca was willing to let his own business survive scrutiny if it meant ending Vale’s network.
Victor had believed Luca weak for changing.
Emma saw strength.
Adrian Vale was arrested two weeks later at a private airfield in Connecticut.
He had planned to leave the country.
He almost did.
Almost.
The financial case was larger than Emma remembered.
Bribery.
Shell companies.
Illegal contracts.
Extortion.
Victor’s payments connected Vale to the attack at the Sovereign.
Not every crime became simple.
Not every witness was brave.
But the structure broke.
And broken structures leaked.
One afternoon, Emma sat with Daniel in Luca’s library.
“You put me at the Sovereign.”
Daniel looked guilty.
“Yes.”
“Why there?”
“Luca’s security was excellent.”
Emma lifted an eyebrow.
Daniel corrected himself.
“Was supposed to be excellent.”
“Better.”
He smiled.
“I knew Castellano was moving away from Vale’s world.”
“You trusted him?”
“No.”
Luca appeared in the doorway.
“Wise.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I trusted his incentives.”
Luca seemed offended.
Emma enjoyed that.
Daniel continued.
“If Vale moved against Emma inside a Castellano property, Luca would investigate.”
Emma folded her arms.
“So I was bait.”
“No.”
“You placed me somewhere dangerous because danger around me would trigger another dangerous man.”
Daniel sighed.
“When you say it like that—”
“How else should I say it?”
Luca answered.
“Terrible plan.”
Emma pointed at him.
“Exactly.”
Daniel smiled despite himself.
Then grew serious.
“I wanted you safe.”
Emma looked at him.
“You should have let me choose.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
No excuse.
No justification.
Just yes.
That was harder to fight.
Later, Belini found Emma alone in the courtyard.
No red gown.
Simple cream coat.
“You were right about me,” she said.
Emma frowned.
“Which part?”
“I knew Victor kept files. I knew he watched Luca. I did not know about the attack.”
Emma studied her.
“Why stay with Luca if you knew Victor was dangerous?”
Belini looked toward the windows.
“Because I thought marrying Luca meant I would finally be safe from men like Victor.”
Emma understood more than she wanted to.
“And now?”
Belini smiled sadly.
“Now I know proximity to power is not the same as safety.”
She removed the engagement ring.
Placed it in Emma’s palm.
“Give this to him.”
Emma closed her fingers around it.
“You should.”
“I know.”
Belini walked inside.
Then stopped.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“Victor was wrong about one thing.”
“What?”
Belini glanced toward Luca through the glass.
“He thought you were Luca’s weakness.”
Emma followed her gaze.
May you like
Belini smiled.
“I think you’re the reason he finally became careful.”
