Chapter 4 - The Secret Inside Bunny

Dante ran.

He reached the east sitting room in less than a minute.

Lily stood on the sofa, crying.

Sofia held her shoulders.

Six guards surrounded the room.

No intruder.

No broken window.

Nothing missing.

Dante crossed to his daughter.

“What happened?”

Lily pointed at Bunny.

The stuffed rabbit lay on the carpet.

Its left ear had split open.

Something metallic had fallen out.

A tiny silver capsule.

Dante stared.

Elena had touched Bunny’s left ear in the recording.

Not the back seam Meredith had searched.

The ear.

Sofia picked up the capsule and handed it to him.

Inside was a microSD card.

Meredith went pale.

Rocco simply closed his eyes.

Dante looked at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

For once, Dante believed him.

They returned to the security room.

The card contained seven files.

Three photographs.

Two spreadsheets.

One audio recording.

And one video.

Dante opened the video first.

Elena appeared on screen.

Alive.

Tired.

Terrified.

She sat in what looked like a hotel room.

The date was two days before her death.

“Dante,” she began.

His name in her voice nearly broke him.

He had not heard Elena say it in three years.

“If you are watching this, then I failed to reach you before someone stopped me.”

Dante lowered his eyes.

Elena continued.

“I need you to understand something first. This is not about your business. It is not about old family rivalries. It is about money stolen from people who trusted your name.”

A spreadsheet appeared beside her.

Charitable foundations.

Widows’ funds.

Employee pensions.

Accounts created after Dante’s father died.

Millions moved through companies that did not exist.

Elena had discovered the pattern while reviewing donations for a children’s hospital.

At the center of the transactions was one authorization code.

VM-17.

Vittorio Moretti.

Meredith’s breathing became shallow.

Elena continued.

“Vittorio did not work alone.”

Another image appeared.

Rocco.

Then Mara Voss.

Meredith.

“Rocco erased camera records. Mara carried documents and moved cash through her father’s network. But there is someone else. Someone I still cannot identify.”

Dante looked at Meredith.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know.”

Elena’s face returned.

“I copied the ledger. The complete version is not in this house. I moved it to Saint Agnes.”

Dante opened his hand.

The brass key rested in his palm.

Locker 214.

Elena continued.

“If Vittorio discovers where it is, he will destroy it.”

Then her expression softened.

“And Dante…”

He stopped breathing.

“If Lily ever hears anyone say my death was because of her, tell her they are lying.”

Lily was not in the room.

Dante was grateful.

Elena smiled through tears.

“She was the happiest thing that ever happened to me.”

Dante looked away.

Even Meredith lowered her eyes.

The video continued.

“I am not afraid of dying.”

A pause.

“I am afraid of Lily growing up believing she was unwanted.”

Dante pressed both hands against the desk.

For three years, Lily had lived without those words.

For three weeks, Meredith had poisoned the exact wound Elena had tried to protect.

Dante turned.

Meredith stepped backward.

“I didn’t know she recorded that.”

“That changes nothing.”

“I know.”

“No. You do not.”

His voice remained controlled.

That made it worse.

“You looked at my daughter and chose the cruelest lie possible because it was useful.”

Meredith began crying.

Dante did not move.

The technician opened the audio file.

Elena’s voice.

A restaurant.

Glasses clinking.

Then Vittorio speaking.

“You should stop digging.”

Elena answered.

“You should stop stealing.”

A chair scraped.

Vittorio’s voice grew colder.

“You married into this family. Do not confuse that with owning it.”

“I don’t want it.”

“Then leave.”

“I’m taking the evidence to Dante.”

Silence.

Then another voice.

Male.

Distorted by distance.

“You won’t reach him.”

Dante looked at Rocco.

Rocco stared at the floor.

“That wasn’t me.”

Meredith whispered, “He’s telling the truth.”

Dante turned to her.

“You recognize the voice?”

She nodded.

“Maybe.”

“Who?”

Meredith hesitated.

Then one of the guards entered quickly.

“Sir. We searched Mrs. Moretti’s dressing room.”

Meredith stiffened.

The guard placed an envelope on the desk.

Inside were two passports.

One identified Meredith as Meredith Hale.

The other showed the same woman under another name.

Mara Voss.

There was also a plane ticket.

Tomorrow.

Rome.

And a photograph.

Vittorio standing beside Meredith outside a private bank only six weeks earlier.

Three weeks before her wedding to Dante.

On the back, someone had written one sentence.

MARRY HIM. FIND THE KEY. LEAVE THE CHILD TO ME.

Dante read it twice.

Then he looked at Meredith.

“You married me for the key.”

Her face crumpled.

“At first.”

“At first?”

She swallowed.

“Vittorio believed Elena had hidden the Saint Agnes key somewhere in this house. He thought you had it without knowing what it opened.”

“So you married me.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily?”

Meredith closed her eyes.

“He told me Lily remembered more than we thought.”

Dante’s voice became almost inaudible.

“What does ‘leave the child to me’ mean?”

Meredith shook her head.

“I never asked.”

A sound came from the laptop.

The technician had opened the last photograph on Elena’s card.

It showed Saint Agnes chapel.

At night.

A man stood beneath the stone archway.

He was speaking to Vittorio.

His face was partly turned.

But Dante recognized him.

Everyone in the room did.

Rocco whispered first.

“That’s impossible.”

Dante stared at the image.

Because the man standing beside Vittorio had been officially dead for nine years.

May you like

Dante’s father.

Alessandro Moretti.
