Chapter 1 - The Hand Victor Russo Ordered Off Her Wrist

“You are mistaken.”

Victor Russo’s voice barely rose above the jazz, but the entire room seemed to hear it.

Liam’s fingers remained locked around Khloe’s wrist.

Victor looked at the hand, not the man.

“Let her go.”

Liam laughed once, too loudly. “Who the hell are you?”

The nearest waiter stopped breathing.

Khloe felt Liam’s grip tighten before it loosened. That tiny hesitation told her more than the restaurant’s silence. Liam might not know Victor personally, but he understood fear when everyone around him shared it.

Victor removed one hand from his pocket.

He did not touch Liam.

He did not need to.

“Three seconds.”

Khloe’s stomach dropped.

“One.”

Liam released her.

Khloe stumbled backward, rubbing the white marks around her wrist.

Victor’s eyes followed the movement, then returned to Liam.

“Leave.”

“I was invited.”

“No.”

“By her.”

Khloe’s voice came out sharper than she expected. “No, you weren’t.”

Liam looked at her as though betrayal belonged to him.

Victor turned slightly toward the maître d’.

“Mr. Bell.”

The maître d’ appeared instantly.

Victor said, “This man is finished here.”

Two security employees materialized from opposite sides of the room.

Liam stood.

His face flushed.

“This is insane.”

Victor’s expression never changed.

“Walk out on your own.”

Liam looked around.

Nobody helped him.

That was what finally frightened him.

He pointed at Khloe.

“This isn’t over.”

Victor’s gaze cooled by a degree.

“It is in this room.”

Security guided Liam toward the entrance.

Khloe watched until the door shut behind him.

Only then did she realize she was shaking.

Victor looked at her wrist.

“Can you move your fingers?”

“Yes.”

“Any numbness?”

“Less now.”

“Good.”

He glanced toward the manager. “Ice.”

The manager ran.

Khloe stared at Victor.

“Do people always move that fast when you speak?”

“Usually.”

“That’s not normal.”

“No.”

The answer was so dry she almost laughed.

Then embarrassment crashed back into her.

Dozens of strangers had watched Liam grab her.

Now dozens more were pretending not to watch the aftermath.

“I should go.”

Victor nodded.

“I’ll have a car take you.”

“I can call one.”

“You can.”

She appreciated that he did not phrase the offer as an order.

“I’ll call one.”

Victor gave another small nod.

Mr. Bell returned with ice wrapped in a linen napkin.

Khloe pressed it to her wrist.

Victor started back toward his table.

She stopped him.

“Why did you help me?”

He turned.

For the first time, something unreadable moved behind his eyes.

“Because he put his hands on someone who said no.”

“That simple?”

“It should be.”

Then he walked away.

Khloe stood there longer than she intended.

At his table, the men resumed talking as though nothing had happened.

But Victor did not pick up his whiskey.

He looked toward the window.

Outside, Liam stood beneath the awning in the rain.

Watching.

Khloe saw him too.

Their eyes met through the glass.

Liam smiled.

Not apologetically.

Not angrily.

Possessively.

Khloe’s blood went cold.

She looked back toward Victor.

He had noticed.

Of course he had.

One of his men quietly rose and moved toward the entrance.

Khloe grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving now.”

Victor’s gaze returned to her.

“Wait five minutes.”

She stiffened.

“That sounded like an order.”

“It was advice.”

“I’m not good with either.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“I noticed.”

She should have been more afraid of him.

Everyone else clearly was.

Instead, the person she feared stood outside in a cheap shirt and wet jacket, not beside a table of men who could silence a restaurant with a glance.

Victor’s man came back inside.

“He left.”

Khloe exhaled.

Victor asked, “Do you have somewhere safe tonight?”

“Yes.”

It was almost true.

Her apartment had two deadbolts.

Liam knew the building.

He had once known every code, every neighbor, every loose window in the laundry room.

She saw Victor understand the lie.

He did not challenge it.

“Keep your phone on.”

She frowned. “You don’t have my number.”

“I do business with your company.”

“That is not my personal number.”

“No.”

Something in the answer irritated her.

“Do you collect employee information for fun?”

“No. For risk.”

Khloe stared.

“That was not reassuring.”

“It was not meant to be.”

She left before he could say more.

Outside, cold rain slapped her face.

Her rideshare was three minutes away.

She checked the street.

No Liam.

Then her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph loaded.

Khloe entering the Obsidian Room twenty minutes earlier.

Taken from across the street.

Below it were six words.

YOU LOOK GOOD WHEN YOU’RE SCARED.

Khloe stopped beneath the awning.

Behind her, the restaurant door opened.

Victor stepped outside.

He saw her face.

Then the phone in her hand.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

“What did he send you?”

May you like

Khloe looked up.

For the first time that night, Victor Russo sounded angry.
