Chapter 12 - Liam Finally Explained Why He Came Back Into Khloe’s Life

Liam asked to speak to Khloe.

She said no.

He asked again through his attorney.

Still no.

Then Detective Walsh told her he had offered information about Gabriel in exchange for a plea discussion.

That did not require Khloe to see him.

She chose to anyway.

Not alone.

Walsh sat beside her.

A camera recorded everything.

Liam entered with his injured wrist in a brace.

For one ugly second, Khloe remembered his hand around hers.

Then the memory became what it was.

Evidence.

Not destiny.

Liam looked thinner.

“You look good.”

Khloe did not respond.

His lawyer warned him.

Liam swallowed.

“I didn’t know they were going to threaten Maya.”

“Start with what you did know.”

He looked at Walsh.

Then back at Khloe.

“Natalie contacted me after the crypto thing.”

“The thing where you stole twenty-eight thousand dollars?”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

“Call it that.”

“I stole it.”

The words sounded difficult.

Good.

He had believed a friend’s promise of fast money. The investment collapsed almost immediately.

Natalie approached him days later.

She knew he owed money.

She offered a job.

Parker Logistics.

Good salary.

Easy work.

All he had to do was forward information about Khloe’s company and occasionally ask harmless questions.

“What questions?” Khloe asked.

“Which clients you complained about. Which shipments stressed you. Who had admin access.”

Khloe’s stomach turned.

“You used pillow talk for corporate surveillance.”

“We weren’t really together by then.”

“We were sharing a bed.”

Liam looked down.

Walsh asked when Gabriel entered the picture.

Liam claimed he never met Gabriel formally.

But he attended a foundation gala as catering staff.

Natalie pointed Gabriel out.

“Saint?”

Liam nodded.

“She said he was the money.”

“What did he want?”

“To take Victor down.”

“Why involve Khloe?”

Liam rubbed his brace.

“Because she was good at her job.”

Khloe almost laughed.

That was the cruelest compliment she had ever received.

Liam explained the plan.

The test shipments were meant to map reactions.

Martin created internal access.

Natalie coordinated data.

Derek handled physical cargo.

Liam monitored Khloe because she had noticed the first discrepancy too quickly.

“What were you supposed to do at the restaurant?”

His eyes shifted.

“Talk to you.”

“Only talk?”

Silence.

Walsh leaned forward.

“Your messages from Natalie say ‘make her stay.’”

Liam’s face flushed.

“She knew we had history.”

Khloe’s voice sharpened.

“She knew you were violent.”

“I wasn’t—”

He stopped.

Khloe waited.

He looked at his brace.

“I had been.”

Not enough.

But more than he had admitted before.

“Did she tell you to grab me?”

“No.”

“Did anyone?”

“No.”

“So that was you.”

Liam nodded.

Khloe felt something inside her settle.

Gabriel’s conspiracy explained why Liam had appeared.

It did not excuse what Liam chose to do once he was there.

Both truths could exist.

Walsh asked about the threats.

Liam admitted sending several.

Not the photograph of Maya’s house.

Not the “access point” scan.

Natalie had given him Khloe’s new numbers after each block.

“She told me you would ruin everything if you kept digging.”

Khloe said, “So you scared me.”

“I was angry.”

“You were useful because you were angry.”

He looked at her.

That landed.

“What about the guns?” Walsh asked.

“Natalie gave me the case.”

“Fingerprints?”

“She said they were already handled.”

“The camera shutdown?”

“Someone else.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Walsh slid Gabriel’s photograph across the table.

Liam stared at it.

“Did you ever receive instructions directly from him?”

“No.”

Then he hesitated.

“Once.”

Everyone went still.

“A voice call.”

“When?”

“The night before the restaurant.”

“What did he say?”

Liam closed his eyes.

“He said Victor had a weakness for people who didn’t fear him.”

Khloe’s skin prickled.

“He meant me?”

“I think so.”

“What else?”

“He said if Victor stepped in, Phase One worked.”

Walsh asked if the call was recorded.

“No.”

“Number?”

Blocked.

Then Liam remembered something.

The voice had mentioned a detail Natalie never knew.

Victor had once broken Gabriel’s nose at age seventeen during a fight at their father’s warehouse.

Victor later confirmed it.

Only family and two longtime employees knew.

Walsh now had a detail linking Gabriel personally to the call.

Not proof.

Corroboration.

Liam looked at Khloe.

“I’m sorry.”

She studied him.

Months ago, she had imagined needing those words.

Now they seemed small.

“You’re sorry because you lost control of the outcome.”

His eyes filled with anger.

Then shame.

Maybe both.

“You don’t know what I feel.”

“You’re right.”

Khloe stood.

“That’s no longer my job.”

Outside the interview room, her hands shook.

Victor waited down the hall.

He did not approach until she looked at him.

“How was it?”

“Useful.”

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

He nodded.

No fixing.

No command.

Just space.

Khloe leaned against the wall.

“He admitted the grab was his choice.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Khloe continued before he could speak.

“That matters to me.”

“Why?”

“Because I was starting to let the conspiracy turn him into a puppet. He wasn’t.”

Victor looked toward the interview room.

“No.”

“Neither are you.”

His eyes returned to hers.

Khloe pointed toward the evidence room where the San Michele ledgers waited.

“Which means you don’t get to blame Gabriel for every page with your initials either.”

Victor went very still.

May you like

Then he said, “I know.”

This time, she believed him.
