Chapter 10 - Elena Came Back from the Dead Carrying the Ledger Everyone Wanted

Viper watched the footage five times.
Thomas watched it seven.
Noah was not told immediately.
Nobody knew whether the woman was really Elena, whether she was acting freely, or whether the image was manipulated.
Mara sent the video for verification.
Facial comparison matched.
Gait analysis matched.
No evidence of editing.
Thomas sat alone outside for nearly an hour.
When he returned, his eyes were red.
“I buried my sister.”
“No,” Olivia said quietly. “You buried someone.”
He nodded.
The difference hurt.
Investigators traced Price’s vehicle.
Traffic cameras caught it heading south toward Kankakee.
Then east.
Then nothing.
At noon, an anonymous call reached Mara’s office.
A woman asked for Olivia.
Mara refused.
The caller said, “Tell her I still remember the library book with the blue moon.”
Olivia’s breath stopped.
At the shelter where she met Elena, they had read the same children’s book every Thursday.
No one else knew.
Mara put the call through on a recorded line.
“Olivia?”
Elena’s voice was older than Olivia remembered.
But unmistakable.
Olivia gripped the phone.
“You’re alive.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You left Noah.”
A broken silence.
“I know.”
“You left all of us.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“Because someone inside the investigation was selling every move I made.”
“Thomas?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“I can’t say on the phone.”
Olivia’s anger sharpened.
“You made me promise to protect six kids when I was twelve.”
“I never meant for you to do it alone.”
“But I did.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to keep saying that.”
Elena began crying.
Olivia did too, though she hated it.
“Where are you?”
“Moving.”
“Are you with Malcolm Price?”
“Yes.”
“Is he holding you?”
“No.”
Everyone in the room reacted.
Viper’s face became stone.
Olivia asked, “Then why are you with him?”
“Because Price is not who we thought.”
Mara motioned for her to continue.
Elena explained.
Malcolm Price had served Preston Hale publicly for years.
Privately, he had been copying records.
He discovered illegal placements before Elena did.
But instead of going to authorities, he tried to build leverage.
At first for money.
Later, after a child died in an unlicensed home he had approved paperwork for, guilt changed him.
“He became an informant too,” Elena said.
Thomas spoke near the phone.
“For which agency?”
Elena went silent.
Then, “Not yours.”
“Who?”
“Inspector General’s office.”
Mara checked silently.
A secure response came back minutes later.
Malcolm Price had indeed been registered as a confidential source under a sealed corruption investigation.
That did not make him innocent.
It made everything messier.
Olivia asked the question that mattered.
“Why did you fake your death?”
Elena’s voice shook.
“Because Hale had a contract on me.”
Viper’s hands clenched.
“A contract?”
“Not murder. Abduction. He wanted to know what I’d copied. Price learned about it. Thomas’s credentials had already been cloned. We assumed every official channel was compromised.”
“So you disappeared.”
“We staged a death with help from a medical examiner Price believed he could trust.”
Thomas looked ill.
“You let me identify a stranger.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You let Noah think you died.”
Elena sobbed.
“I thought hiding from him would keep him safe.”
Viper stepped closer to the phone.
“Elena.”
Silence.
“Victor.”
“Is Noah mine?”
“Yes.”
His eyes closed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because when I learned I was pregnant, the Iron Wolves were still moving stolen vehicles, you were facing charges, and I thought bringing a child into that world was dangerous.”
Viper accepted the blow.
“And later?”
“You changed. I didn’t know how to come back.”
“You could have tried.”
“I know.”
Olivia almost stopped the conversation there.
Then Elena said, “There’s something else.”
“What?”
“The ledger Hale wants contains more than illegal adoptions. It lists law-enforcement officials who protected Halcyon.”
Mara leaned closer.
“Names?”
“I have the original.”
“Where?”
“With me.”
“Then come in.”
“I can’t until I know one name is safe.”
“Whose?”
Elena answered.
“Mara Ellis.”
Everyone looked at Mara.
Olivia felt cold.
Mara’s face did not move.
Elena continued.
“The ledger says Mara received six payments from Halcyon.”
Viper stepped away from her.
Boone did too.
Mara stared at the phone.
“That is false.”
“Maybe,” Elena said. “But the payments use your badge number.”
Thomas reached slowly toward his jacket.
Mara’s hand moved near her holster.
Viper stepped between them.
Olivia shouted, “Stop.”
Every adult froze.
She looked at Mara.
“Did you take money?”
“No.”
“Can you prove it?”
Mara breathed once.
“Yes.”
She removed her badge, weapon, and phone and placed them on the table.
“Check everything.”
Thomas began verifying the ledger information through outside systems.
Within forty minutes, they found the payments.
They were real.
But the bank account was not Mara’s.
Someone had created an account using her identity.
The address on file belonged to a storage unit.
Mara looked at Viper.
“Someone wanted me dirty if Elena ever surfaced.”
Olivia understood.
Hale was not only moving children.
He was building false evidence against investigators.
Then Elena whispered one final warning.
“Olivia, Hale knows you remembered the wall.”
Olivia swallowed.
“How?”
May you like
“Because he has someone near you.”
The line went dead.
